In this Wolff Responds, Prof. Wolff shares his excitement about the revival within the labor movement today. The working class is waking up and fighting for what they deserve. Strikes are increasing and millions have quit their job. We haven’t seen this kind of organizing since the 1930s and that, Prof. Wolff believes, is worth celebrating and holding on to as we begin a new year.

I'm a retired union pipefitter/welder that worked in the non union sector until my 30's. While some companies treated their people decent and paid well enough it all started changing after NAFTA was conceived during the Reagan/Bush era and signed by Clinton. Both parties sold out to the wealthy donor class and that's the problem. It's time to encourage and vote for independent candidates at the the local and state level that support labor, not capital to push things upward. If you're waiting and hoping for change in DC you'll be disappointed. Trickle down is a lie.

@@AmericanTestConstitution Actually no. What has hampered the unionization of workers was the passage of the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947. We need to demand the repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act and to reinstate the Wagner Act with the provision that semi and unskilled labor can join a union.

@@JohnT.4321 Let me rephrase what I said. Foreign labor destroys the POWER of unions. Worker do not want the union itself, it is the power of the union is what they want. What is the powe of a union? The power of a union is the ability of people to threaten quiting their job without being replaced. It's the bargaining power. This threat of quitting without easy replacement is the hard force that causes companies to negotiate on the workers terms. The condition of not being replaceable, the power of the union, is not created by the union itself. It is created by a scarcity of workers. That condition of a scarcity of workers is created, when there is not a large pool of billions of foreign nationals flowing into a nation. The power of the union is created not by the union itself, the power of the union is created when a nation shuts its international foreign ports of entry to foreign nationals. When a nation shuts its borders to foreign nationals, everyone has the power of the union, whether they are formally part of a union or not. We can have lots and lots unions, but the unions are useless when they have power, or when the border is open. It's a simple matter of Law of Supply and Demand.

As exciting as the labor reawakening is, it will not matter in the least unless greater attention is put onto the gun at our collective heads, wealth accumulation. We give individuals far too much power over our lives when we assume unlimited wealth accumulation is a natural process. In the past, wealth accumulation was harmless to the ecology either local or global. The scale is now so much greater, that it must prey on both society and the ecosystem to grow. As I said, the labor reawakening is exciting, but it hardly matters if there are no humans around two hundred years from now. We must bring wealth under control, enough so that no individual can wield political power by using wealth. Noam Chomsky says "With the USA in the lead, marching to destruction because of wealth accumulation, it is our responsibility here and now, to control it, to terminate it, and turn our country back toward sanity".

We the People need to remind ourselves that the "UNITED States of America" represents ALL of us. Not just the Wall Street Executives, not Corporate boards of directors, not politicians on Capitol Hill, and not ANY one group. The UNITED states of America is where we live, work, pay taxes and sometimes die in its defense. There are 330 MILLION citizens in the UNITED states of America but present day realities suggest that there are only a few thousand that really matter. Look no further that the income distribution, the wage scales and the privileges provided for the various strata of our nation. If you do, it is easy to see that, in spite of all our self-aggrandizing speech, we have devolved into a near feudal economy. There is a small handful of .01%ers, a few more 1%ers and then there are millions and millions of the rest of us. That stark reality flies in the face of everything our politicians and pundits tell us to the contrary. What America SAYS about itself and what America actually DOES is truly delusional. A rising tide SHOULD lift all boats. Except in America. The entire world can see the lie. Why can't Americans?

Prof. Wolff: Can you please research & advocate for full intellectual property (IP) abolition? This is the most important activist aim for working class people! A worker co-op economy (& most leftist projects) has very little chance without first abolishing IP. IP is the most severe & oppressive tool of the rich & powerful. Please see the work of Stephan Kinsella, Michele Boldrin, & David K. Levine. These are the best experts on intellectual property in the world. Everyone who cares about seriously improving things for humanity needs to know what IP abolition is about.
@user-wl2xl5hm7k
@user-wl2xl5hm7k 2 жыл бұрын
IP laws make no sense from either left or right politics. The ‘property’ in intellectual property is a false term used for propaganda purposes. Intellectual property is not property in any sense. It’s monopoly. IP actually stifles innovation & creativity. And IP seriously screws up our economy & stacks it for the rich & powerful more than any other tool (especially IP with digital tech and the internet). IP abolition is the most important aim to liberate artists, programmers, inventors, etc. and make them all better off financially.

IP provides for censorship. IP is the main component of cultural control, propaganda, & advertising. Copyright does not just monopolize art- copyright also monopolizes all text, video, audio, photos, images, software & websites. And patents monopolize important aspects of media infrastructure. Therefore, IP is the main component which allows media conglomerates to “manufacture consent”.

The real question is do you want to use the force of government to take the mop and or private property? Do you support using the force of government to take businesses or do you just want to peacefully protest? Theres a big difference between striking and advocating for governmental force to steal private property.

The mental "health" field in most so~called "non~profit" agencies are filled with the most servile employees and draconian policies. Over loaded case loads, low pay, weak benefits and policy of iron obedience to superiors where the bureaucratic mentality reigns, is a perfect example of the economy as it really is. This would appear strange~since advanced degrees in some related aspect of psychology from universities are typically a requirement! What are these universities doing? They are preparing the student to fit in to these agencies by virtually reproducing similar conditions where obedience to authority, mindless adherence to a pre~existing plan of learning ("syllabi"), pre~selected books and other reading material, fawning "respect" for instructors, and toleration of long~winded lectures that hog up class time, leaving students "time crumbs" for questions and comments (if any are truly critical). That is what they are largely doing. Richard: The "caving in" of politicians is not an explanation for all the labor gains that was lost, since labor had to overcome business and government violence to get them. No. 1.The explanation lies in the manufacture, by propaganda, of a new enemy of the scale of nazi Germany, intended to create not merely fear but sheer terror; the terror of total submission to a malignant foreign power~the U.S.S.R. under Stalin. Government propaganda encouraged an uncritical acceptance of a supposed "vulnerable" american nation after WWII, when the communist threat~ "The Red Scare" and "better dead than Red" were the watchwords. That propaganda implicitly involved protection of the secrets of the atomic bomb~ that was, at that time, soley in the hands of the american government. The effect was to put a gigantic scare into the general population which the state~capitalists took advantage of~and it was effective. 2.The effectiveness of this propaganda was the result of it being piggybacked on the trust gained in government from the FDR years~who put in and implemented New Deal legislation. A magic trick! Keep eyes on one hand~leaving the other to do whatever. 3. The psychological reaction of "Denial" is a reaction to a fundamental contradiction in a fundamental belief; that the government that they had trusted, the very government that gave them the New Deal, is now going in the opposite direction~back to pre~union society~and what labor would again have to do to turn this trend around~left them bitter. puzzled, and hopeless~hence~Denial.

@@stuckinthemud4352 I'm aware of many unions and various locals in several of the trades. However I'm not specifically working as a tradesman at my full time work. For about 10 years I worked for a couple different hvac contractors. About 3 or 4 years ago I got my hvac contractor license and had been doing quite a bit of work outside my day job doing building maintenance. Why do you think that any business owes you a job and the employee should demand more than said business can provide. I lived in Anderson Ind. 60% was employee bu GM parts manufacturers Guide Lamp and Delco Remy and the union's would strike for better benefits. The GM workers already made 30% higher wages than the rest of the town. Then GM had enough and packed up and moved these operations to Mexico and Anderson shrink by 50% people have to move elsewhere and I was one of those people.

What about the former General Motors union whose demands were so great that they literally put General Motors right out of business and caused GM stock to plunge to zero. The greedy union crashed GM and every one of its share holders. The U.S. Government had to bail out GM to save all those union jobs. Our local nursing home employs dozens of union paying certified nursing assistants. For decades, the CNA's earned just above minimum wage. Their union did absolutely nothing for them other than collect monthly union dues. Wisconsin was previously not a right to work state. If you worked in a facility that had a union, you had to join the union. Not everyone wanted to be a union member. The law was changed making Wisconsin a right to work state. Currently there are 27 states that are right to work states. Unions are not always the answer.

Can we agree that investment leads to growth and spending leads to inflation. These are the yin and the yang of any economic system? Companies aren't "investing" their gains. They are skimming benefits and extracting them. They are spending any profits on shareholders, largely outsiders, instead of "investing" in their workforce by sharing the profits.

Inflation is caused by greed. The caplistist class raises their prices to increase their profits and increase the wealth gap. A child can see the cause of inflation is the person who profits off setting a higher price for the goods they sell.
@stuckinthemud4352
@stuckinthemud4352 2 жыл бұрын
@@DanA-nl5uo setting a higher price doesn't cause inflation. As a whole it just causes that one item to cost more. The part your missing is the business made more. The money did change hands but it didn't actually cost more value to create said item. What actually causes inflation has to do with producing the item ie how much Value it takes to create a product or service. Your talking about how value is distributed not how inflation is caused. Productivity of available resources is directly tied to the size of an economy. More productive = bigger (economic growth) Less productive = smaller ( inflation) Investment leads to producing things ( growth ) Spending leads to consuming things ( inflation) If you cant grasp this u do not understand any economic system including the one you support.
