Mozart’s own Walter Klavier (1783) had an ‘organ pedalboard of 4-octaves from c to c’’ which according to his father’s letter of Feb 1785 extended beyond the back of the instrument by 2-feet; Thomas Attwood (studied with Mozart 1 Aug 1785 to 4 March 1787) said that the pedalboard attachment ‘had strings of 4 octaves which acted the part of a second Klavier…’

I’m noticing that it sounds more like sonata in B major! Is this because it is tuned to something other than A440? Is that more historically accurate to sound in this key than our modern day C major?

Thanks for your comments. For the K 545 performance we used a "tweaked" Kirnberger III at 421hz.

A lot of work has been done in this area and we can make some convincing speculations about Mozart but in the final analysis we lack too many key bits of information (or there are too many open questions) for a definitive answer to your very important question.

Is it tuned to an old temperament?

My preference is for what is known as Kirnberger III. This is temperament is quick, easy (many pure 5ths) and practical, especially where time is of the essence (concerts and rehearsals) . I usually tweak this temperament to improve certain keys. I know, purists cringe...Thanks for listening
