Thank you so much for this. I saw Charlie Mariano in performance with Eberhard Weber and Rainer Brunninghaus (my favourite keyboard player) on at least three occasions at a jazz club here in the UK. It was in the late 70’s to early 80’s. European jazz has stayed with me ever since, which is why I love your channel. Halcyon days and so many happy memories of incredible musicians’ performing before many became globally famous. Thank you for keeping their music alive. 🌞🙏🇬🇧🌞

Well you have great taste in muisc indeed! Yes, Charlie is my favorite sax/flute player and both Eberhard & Rainier (and Dauner) rank right up there as well. Glad you're enjoying the album-I only wish it were in print so folks could pick up a copy for their home collection.

wonderful album... I saw Dauner & Mariano with the original United Jazz & Rock Ensemble in the 80s in my hometown...
@cosmicpickle6562 Жыл бұрын
Wonderful-I envy you. By the late 1970's I was already a huge fan of Eberhard Weber & Charlie Mariano and only learned about this group through some magazine. But at that time the records weren't at all available here in the U.S.. I never even saw then in the well-stocked shops with huge 'Import' sections. It wasn't until the mid to late 1990's that CD versions of some of the groups albums finally made their way over here. Once again now they're not as easy to get since the company that brought them into the U.S. no longer exists.. Thankfully i've got most of the albums on CD already....I've since also become a huge fan of Wolfgang Dauner and Volker Kriegel.

That's incredible. I would have done anything to be in his presence just to hear him speak about anything at all, he's my very favorite wind player. What great memories you must have of him. I never met him but still miss seeing new releases come out, though there's still so many old things he's done that i'm still discovering and probably will be for the rest of my life, which is wonderful. He left behind so many fine recordings.

Song 5, titled simply "Tagore", was originally a song called "Gram chhara oi ranga matir poth" (in Bengali) composed by Tagore. Here is a rendition with vocals: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZe7ZIx4hamMfqc . It's interesting that Dauner is the other composer in this version. I say this because I've certainly heard Mariano on more Indian music renditions.

Thanks for sharing Louis. Charlie was my favorite Sax/Flue/etc player so meeting him would really have been something special indeed.. I was totally unaware of his playing on the 'Steppenwolf' soundtrack, i'll have to investigate if that was ever commercially available, thanks for the comment!

@@cosmicpickle6562 You can view Steppenwolf on you tube. The score was written by George Gruntz and it's really beautiful ( IMO ). 1:47 into the Movie, Charlie enters and he's heard thru out the movie on alto sax and flute. I love him too; first heard him when he was with Shelley Manne's group a long time ago and on Charles Mingus' album: " The black saint and sinner lady " which is absolutely magic !!! Thank you for this channel; I have subscribed.

@@louisromano2085 Thanks Louis. Well a short time after I first heard Charlie (which was around 1979 or so) I happened to hear him when the local (New Jersey) all-jazz station played 'Black Saint'-this would have been very early in the 1980's and at that time I hadn't known much of Charlie's history. So I heard 'Black Saint' and learned that Charlie had played with Mingus pretty much at the same time. I recall digging the album very much. I have it on vinyl but still have to pick it up on CD. Yes I was looking up 'Steppenwolf' and learned it was George Gruntz (who only passed away a few years ago) but it doesn't look like the soundtrack album got released, sad to say. Thanks for the tip, I will look for the film here-and thanks for your comments & subscribing. -Gary

Il y a ici non seulement des contours mélodiques connus et appréciés des hindous, mais encore un matériel harmonique absolument nouveau, qui nous apporte des prismes, d'aériennes guirlandes. Here, not only are melodic contours known and appreciated by the Hindoos, but also an absolutely new harmonic material, which brings us prisms, clusters of chords, thick chimes, and garlands of garlands. What strikes first of all in this music is, on the one hand, the penetrating charm of harmonic aggregations and, on the other hand, the absolute clarity of intervals!

Hey hey buddy-Happy New Year! I was just thinking of you earlier this evening matter of fact... I'm gonna have to give a spin now to 'Mountainscape' and listen coming from this perspective. @turntabillist3 жыл бұрын
@@cosmicpickle6562 Happy New Year to you too, man! Yeah, listen to the Barre Phillips piece and let me know what you think... Incredible how some of your collection uploads have so many views, like this one and the Hiroshi Yoshimura for example, YOWZA! Sheesh, you'd think someone would jump all over this and reissue some of this stuff in physical format. Then again, I suppose it probably isn't so easy what with legalities, licensing, etc. It's beyond me... but if it were available I'd buy it!
@cosmicpickle65623 жыл бұрын
@@turntabillist I was shocked that I didn't have 'Mountainscapes' loaded on my PC (where I play all my music from as it has a good set of speakers with sub-woofer). So I had to dig out my CD and upload it. Listening to 'Mountainscape 4', yeah if there were more 'active' percussion on the Dauner album then I could easily see this piece fitting right in. Yes, there's a few out-of-print albums i've uploaded over the years that have received tons of plays due to people finding them that aren't subscribers of mine: mostly I think it's certainly this Dauner album, the Yoshimura which took people a long time to discver, then suddenly in the last couple of years was discovered and played by so many folks that they've just reissued the album in it's original mix months ago (that mix is different than the one I have up)... The other 2 'big' ones i'd say are John Abercrombie's trio LP-only recording and the Richie Beirach/George Mraz duo LP (again there was no CD ever released).....
@turntabillist3 жыл бұрын
@@cosmicpickle6562 Ah, OK. Fantastic. Yes, I just looked up the Yoshimura which has been reissued by Light In The Attic who I am familiar with. I have a few of their vinyl reissues and they are very good quality. I will most certainly place an order for this, but I might go for the CD in this case. Is the Abercrombie trio recording the one with the line drawing of him on the cover? That is a great one which I haven't played in a while and I remember you singing its praises in a past video. I lucked into a cheap copy at Amoeba records shortly after you made that video! A great one, indeed. Thanks for all the info!

Yes this is easily one of my very favorite albums, and naturally a favorite Dauner album. His musical touches are quite evident even though there's over 30 years between those 2 albums, a bit like his close friend and collaborator Eberhard Weber who you can easily trace similar musical themes throughout decades of his composing as well.

Hey buddy-Yes, I love that album and it IS Dauner all-solo. The synths are very early monophonic 1970's era and the recording is a bit basic and lacking much 'slickness' for lack of a better term, bit I still love that album as well.
