I was a merchant marine officer before. Once I too worked on a log bulk carrier similar to this ship. Then while securing cargo as shown here, one of our AB Seaman slipped and fell overboard. We never found him. This clip reminds me of that sad incident and the smiling face of that unfortunate Sri Lankan seaman. He was a very polite and hard working person who had come to sea with the hope of giving a good life for his wife and two children. May he RIP. (or a good re-birth as he was a Buddhist).
@Wolfgang22710 жыл бұрын
I am very sorry to hear that, if someone drops into the sea in this situation, there is no chance of survival. When turning the ship in this kind of weather, the deck cargo would drop into the sea and create a hazard which makes any rescue operation impossible. Furthermore the water is so cold that survival is only possible for a few minutes, perhaps less. Our crew did complain about the supplied footwear, it was of poor quality and did not help on logs covered with snow and a few of them slipped and got hurt, luckily nothing serious. You mention his rebirth because he was a Buddhist. Unfortunately it does not matter what Religion you belief in or you don’t believe in, the rebirth is inevitable, and you absolutely cannot avoid it, only if you develop your mind as taught by the Buddha, you can reach a mental state called Nibbana and you can free yourself of the rebirth cycle (Samsara). During the dying moments there happens some kind of reboot in our mind and our memory gets wiped out, therefore when we restart or getting reborn, most of us cannot remember our past lives but the memory does still exist and can be recovered. What you can bring along, as you know, is not your material wealth, only the state of mind follows you, how much you are capable to abstain from evil doings, not to hate, not to get angry, not to feel revenge, not to be greedy, not to be stingy, etc., all those negative or hopefully positive deeds and abilities will form your future life, every deed, good or bad is following us and will bring the corresponding results in the future, even if it seems, that bad people can do so much bad for a long time, they will have to face the results of their deeds, there is absolutely no way to escape. So, if we did something bad in this life, we should start the payback now and not wait till it is too late. You can find some more information in this website (or other Buddhist websites): www.palikanon.com/english/wtb/g_m/karma.htm www.palikanon.com/english/wtb/s_t/samsaara.htm

What most people don't realise is that in storm force weather, after about 12 hours, you're exhausted! You're physically unable to carry on without rest! You use as many muscles and burn as many calories trying to stand upright without support for an hour in a force 8 gale, as you would running 8 miles in that hour! Even sitting or lying down, you have to wedge yourself in otherwise you have to use your muscles to counteract the movement of the ship! I've been in a storm in the Southern Ocean that lasted six days and it peaked at storm force 11, people were crawling because they didn't have the energy to walk. The galley was shut down so we ate canned food straight out of the can! The uninitiated have a sense of fear and wonder at storms at sea but the people who have endured one.... feel exhausted!

@American Nobody, yeah I can see how watching "Deadliest Catch" makes you an expert! That's as foolish as saying "I've watched all of the Rambo films and that makes me an expert in the US special forces" or "I've watched every fight Mohammad Ali ever fought so I can be heavyweight champion of the World!" It's dumb!!! Come back and explain your emotions once you have gone through the experience otherwise it's probably best to keep your opinions to yourself!....... as my Grandmother used to say "It's better to keep your mouth shut and let them think that you're a fool - or open it and prove them right!" Not to even begin to speak upon the *seasickness* that's almost inevitable in really rough seas, even for experienced people, of course some are very well acclimated to that. Most are not. And for those unfamiliar, it can last almost 2 weeks! 😳🤢🤮😰🤢🤮😬😰🤢🤮 Over and over.

@American Nobody you do actually get *more comfortable* with it. Yet, anyone with some sense, doesn't ever become totally at ease during a very powerful storm. At least I didn't. But i wasn't terrified or anything anymore. Just a bit uneasy. No question.

Please do not hit the dislike button if you see the trees. This video was made by seafarer to show life at sea, we have nothing to do with the cargo we are carrying. We are transporting whatever we are offered, the next cargo could be soybeans, iron ore, wheat, fertiliser, coal or whatever. We are just transporting, you cannot blame the fork you use to eat a chicken, that it killed the chicken. I am also concerned about the deforestation, but I am the wrong person to blame, you have to approach the community, which is living near the forest, but they most likely are happy, they can make some money out of it. Since 2017 it is prohibited in China to commercially cut natural forest, perhaps a similar law needs to be drafted everywhere to protect the forest. Perhaps it would be better, as we still need to cut some trees for our local market, to make a law, for every tree to cut, a new (better two) tree has to be planted. We also did carry soybeans from Brasil, (Sorry, if you feel offended, I did not blame anyone, I just explained that we are not responsible for the deforestation, wherever it happens, in Brasil, in Europe, in Afrika or wherever, By the way, I have a video where we carry Soybeans from Brasil: (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKq6fYd6m6aMnck ) there they burn the rain forest to make room for soybeans farms, I am also not responsible for this and people should not blame me for it.

Incredible video to which I can bear testimony as a former sea-going marine engineer on similar sized vessels and some even bigger. It authentically captures what life is like at sea during a heavy storm, and the challenges being faced by all, including deck and engine-room personnel. What saddens me greatly though, is the number of dislikes for this video, which is exceptionally disappointing. It clearly emanates from people who have never ever set their feet onto a foreign-going vessel or even experienced anything remotely similar to this type of storm. May their ignorance lead them to a better life.
@Wolfgang2273 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. For me too, I was surprised about the dislikes until I figured out, it has something to do with the trees. People see the many trees, which had been cut down and feel bad about it. When I realised this, I wrote a comment and explained about it. After that, the increase of the dislikes slowed down considerable.

This vessel felt safe as it rode the most tumultuous of waves. Amazing to be able to have that level of confidence in your vessel and knowing the cargo is safely lashed down. 🇳🇿🇳🇿🐑🐑👏🏼👏🏼
@Wolfgang2273 жыл бұрын
Actually we had a dangerous situation. At night our vessel suddenly started heavy rolling, I woke up, I was sleeping on the floor, and looked out the window and to my dismay, I saw the whole pile of logs slowly rolling from one side to the other and banging onto the stanchions. I knew, a few more bangs and the stanchions would break. At the same time the captain ran to the bridge, switched from autopilot to manual steering and altered the course to head directly into the storm to stop the rolling. The nylon strops became loose and allowed the logs to roll. Normally steel chains are used for this purpose, which keeps the logs more tight, but it seems the nylon is cheaper.

Impressive video! The icing down of the ship and cargo would worry me in these conditions as it makes the ship much heavier very fast. It´s always a factor for seafarers in icy and windy conditions.
@Wolfgang2272 жыл бұрын
Our ship with all the cargo was to high for the water to reach the top and form ice. But I was once on an oil tanker carrying oil from Venezuela to Canada and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence we run into bad weather and iced formed on the fore castle and the ship started to list and the crew had to go forward to chip off the ice. At that moment I was glad to work in the engine department, I was in charge of the boiler and did supply steam to them. Rain, snow and ice do increase the weight of the vessels and during loading a certain percentage of reserve is taken into account for the additional weight.

+MadBeausuff My actual recordings are more than 2 hours, so I took out only a small part of it, worrying it could get too boring. If you watch closely, you will see it has been recorded not all on the same day. There was a time at night, when the weather was much worse, the water was splashing up to the deck where I was standing and I was not able to record it.
@ingebite9 жыл бұрын
+Wolfgang227 some watching it calmly, but for me its the opposite.. so for how many days storm went on? and all that time people were scooping water out in engine room? Going straight in to the wave makes sense, but sometimes better at angle, just little bit and not always you can go straight in to every wave. I still can not figure when little better to go in to the angle. Also, i have some kind of phobia for storm waves while at the sea, is it possible to overcome?..i like watching storm when i'm at the shore though :)
@Wolfgang2279 жыл бұрын
+Inga Аgni The storm lasted for some days and we did not make any speed, just sitting on one spot and riding on the waves, even engine running on maximum power. The water leaking we did manage to stop, more or less. In our case, straight into the waves was the only choice, otherwise the vessel would have started to roll and the decks cargo would have gone overboard and endangered the whole vessel and crew. Don't worry about your phobia, sometimes it is better to be scared, look what happened to this vessel: news.yahoo.com/body-found-search-u-ship-vanished-hurricane-004732994.html or to this similar vessel: www.marinelink.com/news/filipino-vessel-sinks383170.aspx

No need to imagine, that is really happening. The oven in the galley has rails around to keep the cooking pots in place. You have to eat what the cook is able to cook, a stew or a goulash or something like that. You cannot eat a steak or a fried egg as it would have been picked up from the floor many times before it reaches your table. Some people would even have difficulties to keep it in the stomach. Table clothes are made wet to minimise slipping and the plate you better keep in your hand. In rare cases you have to go for dried food.
