That’s a little from column A. A little from column B is: SIX YEARS. BG3 took 6 years to produce, and many, many, many delays. It must have been brutal on him, and his ever-expanding team, during COVID no less. And they fucking did it! So it’s time for them to write their own ticket, and use what they fought long and hard for, to create the games they want in a completely unfettered way.

Nah, Larian just hated working with D&D and found it super restrictive and difficult to translate. They also spent like 7 years slaving away on the thing and made a triumph of game design. They want to do something fresh and new. No one wants to have to keep producing D&D based content or continuing on with pre-established characters for sequels. They want to do something fresh
@Verd254

Sven's comments about moving on from D&D to make their own IP combined with his comments about fighting publishers tells me that if they had done BG4 or even DLC that Hasbro was going to meddle like mad now that they understood that BG wasn't just some niche cRPG. There are some things that the IP holders should retain control over like lore and characters. I think overall Larian's done a wonderful job on BG3, but I disliked how they drastically bent the lore on some things (the tadpole should never have worked on Astarion, being an undead, for example), and the way they did some old returning characters a major disservice in how they were portrayed (Minsc and Jaheira were spot on, but Viconia and Sarevok were very different from how they were in the previous games and they basically ignored potential actions that players of previous games could have taken). At the same time though, Larian is also a video game development company first and foremost, and they absolutely should push back on toxic/unhealthy game design decisions like the rumours about Hasbro/WotC wanting to include things like microtransactions and season passes for BG3. And then there's stuff in the middle like rules that are fine for tabletop, but would absolutely slow/bog down a video game, or PnP rules that need buffing up in order to make certain classes/features viable to use. (A good example? Familiars. In tabletop, due to the sheer creative freedom of what you can do with a familiar, it more than makes up for their severe lack of combat capability. However, in a CRPG where combat is going to be almost ever-present, familiars become a huge liability early on and most spellcasters just flat-out stop using them once they're past early levels. For situations like this, you NEED some sort of scaling/levelling system for familiars and possibly other summons as well.)

Lol but why would Larian stay with Baldurs Gate? They dont want to publicly blame Wizards but we all know its Wizards. You cant have a three decade long reputation of being an absolute shithead of a company and expect people to trust you. Its like NWN 2 all over again. Massive game, groundbreaking for its time, CRPG to the core, but of course Bioware wanted to get as far away from Wizards as humanely possible. The only valid argument I can see is D&D simply has amazing lore and to give credit to wizards restrictions on the games they do focus on turn out great. Theyve also let a lot of crap fly and seem to only crunch down on solid devs.

It kind of reminds me of playing a character, honestly. If there's something you don't like about a character so you keep deleting it over and over - you're never gonna max out and reach the highly lucrative end-game you're looking for. It's not the character's lone fault. You're the one who put it together, didn't gear it with lasting quality, don't care about maintaining its actual needs, and don't pay attention to the layered game mechanics that aren't covered in the tutorials.

I have zero faith what-so-ever in Hasbro and WotC to let whatever studio takes on BG4 have the leeway they need to make a good game. I'm very certain the only reason they let Larian have as much leeway as they did was because they weren't expecting the game to be a huge success, and it had been 17 years since Baldur's Gate 2 was released when they started work on BG3. Now that Hasbro has "proof" that Baldur's Gate games sell well, they're going to take all the steps they deem necessary to make sure BG4 is an even bigger success. Which means micromanaging whoever is making it, sanitizing the hell out of it, cutting pay and corners wherever they can, and rushing the game out in the next couple of years. It will be low quality, it will be buggy, it will be expensive, it will be live service, it will have micro transactions. I very much hope I am wrong, because the game franchise does not deserve that kind of treatment, but knowing what Hasbro and WotC have done in the last few years with Magic: the Gathering and DnD, I have no faith in them. However in my current job I am something roughly akin to a community manager/customer service rep, and almost all of what he said validates/echoes my own frustrations with the way my employer handles its marketing and communications. That "true social resonance" he's talking about seems like common sense to me, so it makes me feel insane when my company still sounds like, "Don't miss this AMAZING opportunity! Buy TODAY!😃" It just feels so obvious that authenticity is king right now, and anything less than that almost feels like active sabotage. Anyway, love that he spoke to this because I don't have anyone in my professional or personal life who seems to get or even care about this.

Decision to let Larian do what they want was the right one so maybe loosen that tinfoil hat.. :D I get your cynicism tough. Big corporations are big because they actively try to get bigger and that is sometimes ruthless numbers game, but even then they wouldn't (usually, i hope) let go of people who make good calls.. There are a lot of layoffs in tech and game industry atm, so there might be other reasons to let go/fire people. It would be very stupid and narcissistic move to get rid of people you disagree with. People who make such decisions usually run the company to the ground so usually there is someone a bit more emotionally developed person in charge. Usually.. xD Don't let that cynical head canon be the truth to you - world seems very bleak from that perspective.

It’s funny to see other companies being shady towards Larian and dismissing their success.. If they want the same kind of success, they should learn from Larian, who respects their employees, dont fall victim for greed and dont see their consumers as numbers, but value the people who enjoy their products. They make consumers want to consume, which is something a lot of companies has started to neglect. Consumers want to be heard in their opinion, and not just seen as a wallet.

I think another option for the dev for BG4 is Archetype Entertainment. It's a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast already, so I'd bet Hasbro would like that. The studio was founded to work on content outside of MTG and DND, but that could change. It's headed up by James Ohlen, who was the Lead Designer on KOTOR, SWTOR, Dragon Age: Origins, Neverwinter Nights, and (most notably) Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II (including Throne of Bhaal). The guy who was the creative lead for some of the greatest games in the genre is already the head of a gaming studio owned by WotC. Seems like a real possibility.

Shouldn’t surprise anyone, “BG4” or whatever it ends up being is going to come for better or worse, with or without Larian for 2 reasons: 1) it’s not Larians IP, not their call 2) the IP is owned by a mega corporation who wants money Not a matter of if but when, we basically just have to wait and see wether or not it ends up being a good game, which if they do indeed take their time and find a good partner on top of letting said partner take their time making the game, and like they did with Larian basically let them do their thing, I do think it could be good, likely not as good as BG3 (I mean come on BG3 is easily among some of the best games ever made) but good nonetheless

Layoffs: When you want to see the results, layoffs have, just have a look at Diablo 4. The original devs of D1-D3 are long gone -- and D4 was long struggling just to understand the concepts that made the predecessors great. Would not happen, if you had the original devs at hand and listen to them. But you can see that in software development in many areas: The next version is worse than the previous one -- why? Because the knowledge left the company.

Blizz issue wasn't just layoffs, it was the alienation of older talent and corruption, their greedy and corporate mindset made all older guys quit, being replaced by new ones(who were then fired, over and over in the layoffs that everyone got to know in the past years), that company went from being ran by nerdy friends, to being run by people who hate the games they make and talk openly about never having read a single line about their games. not to mention the nepotism. And then you had d2 remake done by Vicarious Visions, which was well received, just to have VV cannibalized and disbanded by Blizz. It's almost like competency is rewarded with punishment at modern gaming.

Honestly, it's very easy to see the "problem". Take the player numbers this long after release, combined with no microtransactions to monetize them, and all the corporate heads will be thinking is "look at all this rent we failed to extract". Greed isn't just boards twirling their mustaches. It's built into the way our system runs businesses, the way no business model or vision is as consistently rewarded as "returns right now". Once, customer bases were something to cultivate and develop, via trust in great IPs and investment over time. Now we're a raw resource to be strip mined as quickly and efficiently as possible.

My take on Hasbro and any future WotC games are similar to someone with an incredibly harmful addiction, don't give them money for anything where they can't directly hand you a finished and clearly high quality product, don't trust that what they give you is even what they say they are giving you, don't trust that they won't try to come back later that same night to steal it back and microtransaction it back to you a second or even third time. I luckily haven't been burnt by WotC or Hasbro, but I keep seeing people pre-ordering games which... come on folks... I guess I'm just waiting for WotC/Hasbro to put out a AAAA game that costs $350 for a microtransaction and bug riddled game that over promises and under delivers, and then for the folks who pre-ordered this car payment of a game to defend their objectively poor choices...

I like that one of the replies to "I miss the exciting times" was - "try playing it in a different way." But, I very much agree. BG3 was honesty at it's peak for me in Early Access, because then the game was a Schrödinger's cat: The possibilities was endless, the mysteries were shrouded, the hype was real. Having played through the game a few times now, it's really not the same. Modding is never really enough to keep me excited for a game long term. But - that's okay! We don't need to obsessively play games forever. In many ways I miss the time when game releases were exciting several times a year - instead of "Corporate Greed 19 Valhalla" or whatever other rehash we are getting.

I think that Baldur’s Gate 4 will take place either 100 or so years after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, but the city state has become an industrial city that’s similar to the Victorian Era of London and Meiji Restoration Era of Japan. There are trains, submarines and other forms of new steam punk inventions. Plus there’s a new weapon mechanic known as the gun. The gun comes in many varieties such as flintlocks, blunderbusses, muskets and revolvers. All of the is available to the new class called the Engineer, who specializes in crafting turrets, cannons and robots to aid in combat. I’m pretty sure that Shadowheart, Astarion and Halsin will have some cameos, but they’re definitely in their mid 40s or 50s due to their Elven blood making them age slower than the rest of the humans.

While I agree 100% about Hasbro's money before consumers stance, I do need to highlight some potential perspective around letting a large number of employees go from a business. There are times when a business finishes up a major project and lets go people who were recruited on a fixed term basis. There are also times when a business has a change of direction in what it is doing and people who were linked to doing the old thing are let go. In both cases a large number of new people will be hired for the new project / new "thing the business does" but it still gets reported as layoffs / people being let go. For example an IT service company getting rid of a web design section and starting to develop mobile applications instead will have a significant staff churn. The firing of (sorry, "parting ways with") WotC's CEO is a very loud indication of big changes happening in WotC. Hopefully some common sense coming with new leadership, but not holding my breath.

Can"t wait Larian's next project, but what BG3 hype built, is for ever. Hope they will stand as long as they can !

I'll never forget how Larian made me regain the joy of playing games. I'm very excited to see what they'll release in the future. At the same time, while i look forward to BG4, i'm a bit concerned on how it will be.

If I was larian, I would start a similar style game, without being restricted by the BG3 title restrictions. I'm certain they have money for it, and after BG3, they could even crowdfund a chunk of their budget.

something tells me if your watching this channel you don't need to be convinced that Larian is a damn good studio and deserves all the accolades.

As much as I love the success of Baldur's Gate 3, and have been in love with the bg series for years with Hasbro owning the BG IP, I'm really really really fucking scared the legacy is gonna be fucked up.

Companies like Hasbro lay off these hard workers because they don't want customers that expect quality, they want simple easy to manipulate consumers that will buy all of their low-effort slop. BG3 being such a labor of love was its greatest strength and weakness.

As someone wanting to get into voice acting larian gives me so much hope for my future, I’d love to get the chance some day to work with them cause god they care so much. I’ll be buying and following anything they put out. They really show that we aren’t just walking wallets
