Another thing worth mentioning, if you inflict an opponent with certain statuses like sleep or paralyze (Such as via a hold person spell), you can use the coup de grace special attack option on them which is an instant critical hit and forces the target to make a Fortitude save or die instantly (DC is either 10 or 15 + Damage Dealt). Coup de grace does trigger AoO from other enemies in reach though, so be mindful of positioning when using it One of the most reliable ways to line up Coup de Graces is with the Slumber Hex, which can be learned by Witches and Shamans from level 1/2. Just watch out for opponents with high will or immunity to mind-affecting effects

I'd add that the combat log at the bottom right of the screen is quite useful, especially for learning. I haven't played WotR yet but in Kingmaker you could mouse over things in the combat log to get more details. For example if your character misses an attack roll you can look at it to get a break down of what their roll was and what modifiers are affecting the roll.

Note that each character gets only ONE AOO per round. So consider having your toughest character deliberately pull an AOO if you want to let your squishier character run past that enemy that round. Using Choke points is an incredibly useful way to wipe entire groups of enemies with AOE spells like Create Hole. Near the very start of my first run, at the fight at the partly collapsed tower (You know, the one where the dwarf assassin warns you to go get help) I got the enemies to bunch up on the ramp leading up to the ledge, and Create Hole took out more than half of them.

In turn based mode your characters movement normally is set to use as much as necessary to reach a destination. This means you might end up using your action as well as your movement by accident because you move slightly too far. If you right click you can choose a limit, it goes 5 feet, move action or default as much as needed. Using 5 feet lets you move out of combat range without provoking attacks of oppurtunity, great for magic or bow users. Movement action guarantees you have action left to use while moving as far as possible while doing so. I pretty much only use the default move only for moments where i want to move fighters into the face of archers or wizards. Also a good tip is moving close combat fellows up to enemy wizards or archers, even if you don`t get movement enough to attack you can get free attacks if they shoot or cast. Charge works as well for this and letting you attack but keep in mind you get an AC penalty when charging, might be suicidal if the enemy has close combat fighters nearby

2 other things imo worth mentioning for beginners 1. vast majority of aoe spells/abilities do have friendly fire, so be careful throwing around fireballs or lightning strikes. 2. everyone gets a 5ft free scoot per round. A Note About Buffs: in most cases buffs of the same type do not stack, and only the highest buff takes effect. For example, you might have a morale bonus, a luck bonus, a resistance bonus and since all three are different they will stack. But if you get another luck bonus, it will instead compare to the first and only the higher bonus takes effect. Some bonuses _can_ stack though, such as dodge bonuses and (IIRC) circumstance bonuses.

Looks like they added tooltips to warn you about what's non-stacking, which is super nice. It's been a thing with DnD forever and was in the last Pathfinder, but WITHOUT TOOLTIPS...keeping track of who benefits from what and isn't locked out of benefitting from a spell is a bitch once your casters have enough slots that it can really change how dynamic the game feels if you're wasting them. Or how fast you can progress without stopping to micromanage. DO i learn 3 of these or 5? If I had those other 2 slots for dmg, could I progress further without resting? Shouldn't have to keep notes like that in a video game...the game should take notes for you but leave you to understand and use them effectively.

Also worth mentioning for anyone who never played a crpg, when focusing enemy parties -> rule of thumb: TAKE OUT THE HEALER FIRST. After that usually mages and/or dps, depending on what is most dangerous and does not have too much hp. Enemy tanks are last. Might be obvious for most people but anyway.
@gordonmcinnes83283 жыл бұрын
Two things: 1. Reach weapons (and enlarge person) - have a tank but back them up with a character with a reach weapon and cast enlarge person on them - I suggest Sosiel. 2. Spontaneous casters can SPAM spells. This (especially combined with metamagics late on) can give you multiple attempts to defeat a particular enemy resistance or buff (e.g. dispel magic). For highly buffed enemies (usually bosses) this is huge.

People don't consider this often enough: the game has difficulty settings for a reason. If you need to learn how to play, lower the difficulty and then rise it up step by step as you improve. If you want just to enjoy the story, lower the difficulty and have fun. Too often people say "This game is difficult", but it really doesn't make sense. It is as difficult as you decide it to be, and you can always adjust on the fly...

Even on story mode the game can still be very “difficult” to grasp. Sure you will win all of your fights, but you still won’t understand half of what is going on. That is part of the reason why people say it is difficult. Also many players don’t want to play under the normal difficulty level (myself included). I always want to play a game at the very least on its normal base established difficulty. On normal mode pathfinder still tends to be more difficult that other games on their normal modes.

Sorry for the essay, but here are some things I learned the hard way in Kingmaker. With buffs it's important to pay attention to what type of buff you get. Buffs that target AC, skill checks or saving throws may stack, but not buffs of the same type. You can stack a deflection bonus to AC from the spell Shield of faith with a dodge bonus to AC from the feat Dodge. But you can't stack Shield of faith and Ring of protection, since they're both deflection bonuses to AC. Archers and spell casters who shoot or make ranged touch attacks into melee gets a -4 on attack (an enemy who engage another companion counts as melee regardless if the archer/spell caster is 20 feet away). To remove that penalty take the Point blank shot feat to get a + 1 and then Precise shot feat to remove the penalty altogether (Point blank is a prerequisite for Precise shot). Good idea to take on spellcasters who will rely on ranged touch attacks like Scorching Ray, Hellifire Ray, Disintegrate, finger of death etc for damage to make sure they actually hit. Ranged touch attack can sneak attack in Pathfinder. The prestige class Arcane Trickster is built around that but isn't necessary to make a "sneaky mage". A single rogue level and the accomplished sneak attacker feat adds 2d6 to every ranged touch attack. This applies to ALL ranged touch attacks, even cantrips. Edit) ranged touch attack not spell attack.

Another tip I would advise for new players is to utilize the free move action. Each turn you have a move action and an Standard action. But you may not notice the little set of boots the left of the move action icon that says 5 ft. This is your free move action. This is a very important action w/ multiple functions. The first thing to know is how to actually use it. You can switch between your standard move and your free move by right clicking on the ground. You may notice that after attacking at range you have a very short move for some reason. It is because the game has activated your free move instead of your normal move action. Right clicking will let you switch back to the normal move if you want (most of the time).The reason this is a toggle is because you can't use both in the same round. If you use a regular move you won't be able to use your free move, and if you use your free move you won't be able to use your regular move. So why would you want to do this. Well there are many actions in the game that Take a Full-round in order to activate. A full round uses both your move and standard actions. These include many spells, like restoration or most summons, as well as full round attacks that can give characters extra attacks for characters w/ a sufficient BAB (base attack bonus). So you can use the free move to still move around a bit while performing these full round actions. Free moves also bizarrely bypasses attacks of opportunity. So if you caster gets caught up in melee you can use it to back up a bit w/o getting punished for it. And for most standard size enemies 5 ft is enough to exit attack range allowing you to safely cast spells or perform ranged attack w/o reprisal. Free move can be done before or after such actions as well. So you can use it to reposition your characters to best utilize full round attacks or attack first then back out of danger while your tank picks up agro. Inch forward each turn to keep your ranged fighters in.. uh...range as the battle progress, or slightly reposition your tank to pick up that enemy coming round the side. This is another feature that I think only works in turn based mode, yet another reason why it's just better.

WHAT?? Someone mentioned a "scoot"/free move earlier but I didn't see how to use it. Thank you!

On number 2 I want people to keep in mind that Lann as a pure Zen Archer at level 3 gets the ability to fire his bow without taking attacks of opportunity (Point Blank Master). Of course you may not want to use him that way but Lann can make a decent frontliner. The system sorts characters by AC, and if that's Lann he'll be put in the front. That said it's more of a nitpick, the broader point stands. After all you may have a character that has higher AC than another but the character with lower AC may still have more defenses if they're running with Mirror Image and Blur.

Another reason to activate turn based mode is the surprise round is much more effect whit it on. The entire party gets a half turn free action if you surprise or sneak attack an enemy to start. During this half turn you can have your ranged classes lay down spells or attack to disable targets before they can act. And your tank(s)/melee characters can "charge ability" in to close ground and attack if they are positioned correct. In turn based mode your enemies are stationary and flat footed, making them much easier to hit, in the surprise round. With good planning you can take out one or more enemies before the battle even start. This may also technically occur in active time mode to some degree, but it MUCH harder to capitalize on as enemies will immediately move to engage you and won't give you the time for that free attack before they start moving.

I like how in your chokepoint explanation video, your dumb horse runs into the doorway, taking up the spot where you'd likely want to have your Paladin. Making all your melee fighters stand behind it, raging at the horse, and throwing all the carrots away.

The biggest 2 things that got me through this game(and Pathfinder in general) is Use Magic Device and multiple weapons. It can be incredibly easy, especially in the early game, for a teammate to have nothing to do in certain fights due to a lack of the right tools. Maybe their best weapon isn't cold iron or magical. Maybe the enemy is immune to their usual spells. Maybe they simply keep getting put in situations where the melee attackers can't get close and your range fighters keep getting rushed. Give everyone a different secondary weapon, and give anyone who can Use Magic Device so they can use a scroll or wand in a pinch to contribute in a fight. That said, do the same with your character. Make them good at 2 things, instead of focusing on a single goal. Being a fire mage sounds cool till you realize a 1/3 of all your enemies are resistant to your best damage. Make that mage a decent archer. Make your tank specialize in a weapon so they can hit more than they get hit. Make your healer have some offensive spells juuuuuuust in case.

Well done summarize of something, what should be essential in classic RPG games. Good job Wolf. About Tips nr.3: I personally get rid of the thinking that all my party are essential to ,,focus fire" tactic. Instead I'm splitting the team into 2 group, which one of them specialize in ranged attacks. Its priority is to get rid of the spellcasters, when the other is to kill melee opponents one by one. I found this variant is more proficient than simply focusing attack on one enemy. Especially when you have a systems with a range penality for shooting to the oponent when he is in clash combat.

Excellent ! EDITED : In another video, if you want, naming how to avoid AoO could be helpful info to spread: the three common ones are 1) **5-Foot Step,** 2) **Mobility skill check** (automatic it would seem), but also 3) **Acrobatics (Mobility) toggle** where you evade AoO when moving! (but move half speed). I do not think there is any Disengage action à la D&D 5e. There is also the issue of Concentration checks: "Casters *automatically* [in Kingmaker/WotR] attempt to cast defensively, if they pass a Concentration (DC 15) check, they do not provoke an Attack of Opportunity while casting"* (otherwise damage could make them utterly fail casting in melee!). Casting Defensively : difficulty is 15 + x2 spell level (so low level spells are easier to pull off in melee) Caster rolls : caster level +their caster modifier (like Wisdom for a Cleric, Charisma for a Bard...) + some Feats you can take.

Speaking of holding a doorway/chokepoint, click the button "hold position." If you're in real-time with pause this button click is invaluable because otherwise your party will continue to run and and you will have to micro-manage their movements or you have to turn off the AI. Clicking "hold the line" button will do just that your party will engage everyone that come into contact rather then run around like chickens. If you're in turn-based mode you don't have to think about this as much since you're in control of everyone and their movements. Edit: Also you can click move with mobility ability (the blue icon in your abilities tab) to move around without provoking attack of opportunity. Or you can click/move 5 feet. This will also allow you to move without provoking attack of opportunity.

One thing to note, it is impossible to round up a horde of melee attackers with your tank in turn-based mode. Some will inevitably pass through your tank and proceed to your casters. On the other hand, it is very easy to collect all aggro with one char in real-time mode. If a tank is fighting in melee alone, having him surrounded by 4+ enemies will make him flat-footed and quickly killed.
@frederickcoen78623 жыл бұрын
The biggest piece of simple advice is "Buff". Pathfinder as a *system* (not just these CRPGs) assumes that you are taking advantage of all the stacking bonuses/penalties. Armor stacks with natural armor (like an amulet), plus deflection (like a shield or ring), plus a luck bonus, plus a morale bonus (like from a bard), plus a size modifier maybe, plus a competence bonus from a feat or maybe Fighting Defensively. And of course, plus your DEX and magical enhancement bonus (depending on the armor). Suddenly the 2 points of armor from Studded Leather (so, base AC 12) has somehow become 25 AC! Or that +4 sword attack bonus for your 18 STR has become +11. What's that you say? you don't have 18 STR? Why not - Bull's Strength gives you a STR bonus for quite a long time, why aren't you casting it / drinking the potion? Managing your buff durations is key, too; cast that "minute per level" spell first, *then* drink/cast the "round per level" spell. And remember that scrolls and potions are always at minimum level. A level 18 archmage reading a scroll of magic missile is casting *one* missile. [And "always" in Pathfinder = "except for X, Y, and Z special cases that break the rules"!] In most CRPGs I hoard potions and scrolls against "someday", and end the game never using them after the first few minutes of the game. In Kingmaker (CRPG), I kept at most 4 or 5 of the most powerful potions; I did use them rarely, and usually had plenty of time to replenish my stocks from loot and still have extras to sell off. So far in WotR - I'm not quite 5th level yet - I am actively *buying* potions and scrolls for the first time! [Part of that has to do with not having a true cleric yet...] I bought out the bartender's stash of all 35 potions of healing. I'm buffing as completely as possible before pretty much every setpiece battle. Can I afford to use Enlarge person for extra size-based STR and damage, or should I go for Reduce Person and the size-based AC? TL; DR = BUFF!!!

I think a problem for beginners in this game is that so many companions are designed as back liners. In Kingmaker you had a barb,and tower shield tank from the start,and a heavy cleric and scythe inquisitor to boot later on. Here they give you a paladin,and glass Cannon caster hybrid. Everyone else early game is backline. So early it's maddening,because there isn't enough beef to stop getting rushed. Also making the default rouge arcane trickster, will be a chore at first. Just give him a crossbow, and save yourself a headache. He can't wear armor, and without buffs will get rolled if enemy decides to hit them.

The only thing I would add is to take out enemy spellcasters first ASAP. A mage or cleric can turn the battle with one spell, and it's best - if possible - to remove that threat immediately. Usually I have Lann and any other archers try to turn them into a pincushion, and then also have Ember try to disable them with hexes or spells.

The whole problem with this game is it is made for grognards, which is a very bad thing because that means it only truly appeals to a VERY niche audience. I am 50 hours in level 13ish. My average encounter is enemies who spam 100 foot radius high DC fears, melee gods who get 6-7 attacks a round at +high 30's bonus to hit with +25 or more damage per hit, enemies who on round 1 are instantly mirror imaged with full concealment and immunity to things ranging from magic missile, to almost every status effect that exists, including coup de grace, and 30+ DR to multiple elements. It isn't even rare for me to see AC's in the 38-40 range, or over 50% spell resistance, or enemies who regen 20+ hp a round. Here is the only tips that matter in the end. 1: You have to play turn based, this games normal is any normal crpg's hard or one step over hard. You can go from "everything is fine" to "TPK" in a matter of seconds of real time at high level. 2: You must pre buff always, constantly, every single fight eventually. In chapter 3 onward you will lose every meaningful fight you do not pre buff. Frankly you will still probably lose a lot of them anyway. 3: Rest constantly, screw the corruption build up, it doesn't matter just pull out and heal it off as needed. They literally assume you will be doing this. 4: Set your autosaves to 20 or higher, no really. 5: This is a grognard game, they expect you to save scum, and you 100% should.

hey there Wolven Heart! I am learning to master this game now that the Enhanced Edition is out. Your videos are a good mine of tips and tricks. Turn based combat ON is the best way to master this game. Before I had not a clue what was going on, and felt like I was playing an RTS style Combat system. Eventually, I hit a wall and I didn't know what to do and how to remove the various afflictions and ailments. Hence I really appreciate these videos. This game is worth the effort and the story + world is amazing :) cheers!

Turned based combat is crazy easy. It was not even present in the original kingmaker at launch and was added because players demanded it. The AI is not very good, so the dev tactic is either to increase number of enemies or pump up stats for them. The overall chaos of the real-time combat then benefits the enemy. The moment you switch to turned based, you removed that chaos and game becomes super easy.

A second comment (my first was supporting "Buff"): "Don't Give Up". Other games (and gamers) call it "save-scumming". I'll own it; whether I'm brute-forcing through encounters, or being strategic and buffing... a key critical hit will swing the results of the battle. Reload, try again; maybe try different buffs. Having said that, though, be aware... this game allows you to take on locations and encounters pretty much how you want, in the order you want. That also means that it allows you to try to tackle things you aren't quite ready for! Don't be ashamed of backing away from a deadly fight and coming back later. Hypothetically, I *might* have accidentally summoned a powerful demon, which I ran into a bit later. And it had friends. With only 5 people in the party at that time, barely 3rd level, I didn't have a chance. (which I proved, with multiple save-scum attempts) However, when I came back to the area later, having gained a sixth character and leveled up to 4th, it was merely a rough and exciting battle... which I triggered from a different direction, which put me right next to a spellcaster, allowing me to kill the demon's support on round 1. Completely different fight! So definitely, search the area for options, for new directions; don't forget to buff appropriately... but also, don't be afraid to "strategically relocate" to another area, and return later with more friends and more power!

i just finished kingmaker yesterday on the toughest custom difficulty, which is actually tougher than unfair because unfair stops just before insane enemy difficulty. it was crazy towards the end with the wild hunt having 40 plus saves and 60 ac. I can't wait to start the new one tomorrow. I'm probably going to roll another slayer deliverer archer style.

@@WolfheartFPS thanks, it only took me 300 hours haha. my group consisted of 2 slayer deliverers one with a glaive/fauchard w/cleave the other long bow. I speced Valerie as a paladin. then I had a vivisectionist for buffs and a bard and i kept Tristian for his special abilities from his story line. I would swap out my second slayer for a sorcerer arcane trickster sometimes but most of the time saves were to high for anything other than dazzling display.

Many people that come from the original PF2 Ruleset: The game does not use original rules. While a gamemaster changes the difficulty based on some rules to make enemy groups bigger, use different types of enemies the game changes numbers. One thing a gamemaster learns quickly is this: DO NOT MESS WITH THE NUMBERS. If you mess with the numbers and don't know what you doing (like the devs of the pathfinder pc rpgs) you will create situations that are infuriating for those that come from the tabletop/rpg game. Like: "Why does this guy have 34 Hitpoints?! He should have 20!" and so on. Changing numbers makes the game unbalanced as heck and you have to be a perfect powergamer and understand all the mechanics to see any positive effect. Also, I tested it mulitple times with many dice: the amount of natural 1's you're throwing out in this game is insane. I have dozens of dice sets and I throw a d20 a hundred times and often enough come around 4 - 8 (average is around 5) natural 1's and the same amount of natural 20's. There is no "Oh you only see the bad and remember this much more". Nope. I counted it multiple times in the game. Of around 100 "dice" throws the rng has the double amount of natural 1's thrown at you as well as natural 20's. Enemies have roughly the same amount of 1's and 20's. This game is NOT Pathfinder 2 but just a rough setting around those rules with tons of meddling stats and ac. Stay away if you want to experience the tabletop feeling on PC. If you can change your mindest, this game is great. If not: You will have a bad time on any other difficulty than normal+. Stay crunchy.

i dont understand why anyone would play this game without turn based mode. I think games based on pathfinder or D&D needs this by default, and have a "wtf are you doing?" mode, which is non turn based. that is one thing that was missing from NWN2 that would have made it a much, much better game.

"They put my monk archer in the front" thats actually a accurate place for him. Theres a reason he gets the feat for no AoO from ranged attacks at early levels Bless does not last a minute. It lasts a minute per level of the caster. If you cast bless as a lv 5 Oracle it will last 5 Minutes
@WolfheartFPS3 жыл бұрын
It’s not an accurate place for him in my opinion. Sure he gets the feat for no AOO but that doesn’t mean he’s meant to be a front line tank. I have a Paladin with a ton of HP and a high AC with little to no ranged attacks that should absolutely be in front of him, making the games placement not make sense. In terms of bless, yes I should have mentioned that. It lasts quite a while as you start leveling up.
@altoid34533 жыл бұрын
@@WolfheartFPS I agree that the paladin shouldn't be in the back, but monk is still a dodge tank even as a zen archer. Bless lasts even longer when you get to the mythic abilities

My #1 tip for beginners. Don't bother with attack spells nor much about debuffs. The monsters you need it against have stupid SR and saves and will just about always make the saves if you actually penetrate the SR(Spell Resist). Go for buffs and summoning. #2 tip. All damage classes should have atleast 1 level in something that gives them sneak attack. Counts for A LOT and you will nearly always get sneak attack, especially if you have a mounted character since when mounted always count as flanking.
@SirCanuckelhead2 жыл бұрын
Def disagree with #1 hexes will always hit for 1 round even if they save. Evil eye ac hex is huge to even be able to hit some things.
@gangr3l2 жыл бұрын
@@SirCanuckelhead Hexes are not spells though. And with cackle you can keep them up, which makes Ember an invaluable member to any group. Those are the exceptions though.
@SirCanuckelhead2 жыл бұрын
@@gangr3l hexes are debuffs tho which you said not to focus on. But I do agree that focusing on attack is not the way in this game. Something like dos2 where you want to hit hard to remove armour, where in pf you need to focus on your dice rolls, which buffs and bebuffs will do. Having a high ac so you are hard to hit, and being able to over come your enemies ac to actually hit them are super key.

did they fix the fact that you need to camp an ungodly amount of times to get through an instance? reason i stopped playing kingmaker 9 hours in was because the camping was getting ridiculously tedious. also i decided early on to ignore every random encounter because they are numerous, pointless, and end very quickly unless ur up against some wierd hard enemy.
