For their entire childhood, the Angulo brothers had only one true escape from their lives confined inside their family’s New York City apartment.
“As far back as I can remember anything -- like, as far back as I can remember loving my mom -- I remember movies,” Narayana Angulo, 22, told ABC News’ “20/20.” “They were like a door into another world."
Watching movies was the one privilege, the brothers said, that their father allowed.
“The movies taught us like, sort of how to speak to one another, how you interact with another person and have an opinion,” Mukunda Angulo, 20, told “20/20.”

But like...doesn’t that all that motherly love get kind of cancelled out if you’re partnered with a strange, controlling man openly abusing you and your kids in a way that is not normal and perverted and could leave them permanently scarred like...that does reflect on her mindset a good deal, not a healthy situation at all to get yourself into married to a megalomaniac idk their lifestyle seemed sketch af even before their kids. Living in a van with 6 kids, Hare Krishna...Thinking you have no control over your life and must follow your ‘husband’ who just took and took from what made you happy like being outside So like...are you not normal and perverted like your husband? Idk I’m getting tired of these weak ‘mothers’ like what were you doing to protect your children. Overall super relatable story

The father should be up on abuse charges - because that's what this is - ABUSE! And the mother didn't have the courage to just say NO to locking herself and her kids away from the rest of the world? I was homeschooled. The govt makes sure you're being educated by sending you CAT tests each year. They don't come in and look at you; that would be messed up, creepy, and controlling. As a homeschooler who knows many others of my kind, I can say with confidence that a big part of the reason why these kids are so well-spoken and well-rounded is because they were educated by their mother. The rest of the situation was messed up, but she clearly did a good job.

1,000 sq for nine people is not huge. A normal 2 bedrooms apt is usually 1,000 sq. So these rooms and baths were tiny, specially taking in consideration that they were not allowed on the living room nor one of the bedrooms so they probably had access to only 750 sq. For a total of 9 people. That's about a 1 bedroom apt.

So they were all likely on medicaid/WIC, and certainly they were on food stamps. There is a lot of holes in this story. Everyone talks about the heroicism of their plight. I cannot help but think, why is there no question of what punishment the father got? And in order to keep medicaid for your children, you are required to atleast do a yearly physical. 9:19 You can see 6 kids here, the 5 boys and a daughter. Perhaps she didnt quite fit in with the 'wolfpack look' the 5 boys had or didnt want to be in the movie or talk in this documentary. I'm guessing the 7th kid died very young and they didnt want to get into it?? I mean, they were having babies while living in a van.

I'm hoping nothing happened to them honestly. The most logical explanation, to me, is that they simply didn't want to be involved. They escaped from the house, maybe they simply wanted to move forward without the media's influence.

I said the same thing exactly!!! Haha. Is this story even real? All of the things just don't add up. 1. They are too camera ready. 2. Not socially awkward 3. Sisters not shown as adults 4. Dad not mentioned or punished 5. Paid to homeschool their own children 6. Landlord not inquiring once?? I mean at least once? Usually things happen like this in a house to avoid any attention that you'd get in an apartment. 7. No mention about how they obtain material for costumes 8. Roller skating in the house and running and jumping... Who would not hear that next door and underneath?

@@happysmileylips I thought it weird they all went out the first day in perfectly tailored suits when that lady spotted them.. 🤔 Not often you see kids in tailored suits. And I'm actually surprised that they were taught so much to be afraid of the outside world but they ALL seemed to want to break out and explore. Lots of kid who are cooped up or overprotected become scared of their own shadows..not want to run and break free immediately. It's a very different story..that's for sure.

@Andy Griggs My husband is military and I have 5 special needs children. I cannot work due to the care required by my children. We qualify for free food and free school programs (no fees for classes and no fees for afterschool programs) We do not take the school up on it as my kids dont attend regular school. We also qualify for food stamps and WIC but do not utilize any of those services.(my personal belief is if you can cut out the extras and pay for it yourself..then do it..so we do) If the schools knew of a grant program like that at my kids schools/County they would have shared it by now. They are very good about helping poor and special needs families👍 Just must not be available to kids in our area. 🤷‍♀️ *working for the nonprofit pays me nothing*

This is very strange to learn about because the house next to me was for rent when I was a toddler and a family moved in with a son who had extremely long hair like this. The family never left the house and we started seeing cockroaches come into our yard(which had never happened before). Out of curiosity my mother looked over the wall and their entire backyard was filled with trash bags and the inside of their house was covered in foil. My mother accidentally called their son a she, which made the mother curse out my mom. After that experience the entire family left in the middle of the night. Very weird.
