Considering that Kirov fired off all her missiles and most of her escorts are knocked out of action, it would make more sense to return to the Soviet Union. In the Atlantic, it would just get taken out by a carrier task force, with no way to fight back. Also, a US task force and capital ship was sunk, I'd say mission accomplished, time to head home. Really awesome engagement though, and a great showing of the P-700, didn't even need the Slava's missiles.
@forcea1454Ай бұрын
Kirov would be held back to defend the SSBN Bastions, Soviets didn't really have any intention of conducting commerce raiding into the Atlantic, not with their best surface ships.
@ShadowGJАй бұрын
Overall, I don't think one would realistically see Kirov operating far beyond Soviet or Soviet-held territory, without air cover and somewhere to retreat to fairly quickly. As great as this engagement went, Kirov was left spent and poorly escorted, its position known to a surely vengeful enemy. Not only is her ill-considered mission thoroughly compromised, so is her ability to return to a friendly port. If not caught by a carrier task force, by submarine or air attacks coming from as far east as Britain. Sure, you've dealt a significant blow to the Americans, but nowhere near war-winning. And she's done, so far out in the Atlantic. Critical resource spent. This scenario had to ignore a whole bunch of context and have NATO make very questionable decisions (i.e. try to engage Kirov's group with an old-fashioned Iowa SAG as opposed to a carrier TF) for it to play out the way it did. But this is mostly a demonstration, and a fairly plausible one, at that. It's not a walk in the park, NATO still fights hard, and there's a lot of tension. Definitely engaging.
@Goose_in_pants10 күн бұрын
@@forcea1454 As far as I know, Kirovs were designed to be raiders, however not against transport and even not against carrier task forces, but against NATO SSBN. And during development it turned out, it's has both massive SAM and ASM arsenal to be a core ship of soviet task force.

@Goose_in_pants10 күн бұрын
@@BoraHorzaGobuchul They could. I mean they are large enough to carry enough electronics of this time for that purpose, especially since RTOS for them isn't too hard to implement. Moreover, Granits even have their own ecm station! Their problem is not their capabilities, it's their size, because it's limiting size of ships able to carry them significantly. Tho we don't know it it really would be that effective, direct confrontation have never happened. I would say, it's sad, but no, WW3 is not a fun event.... Still in all naval wargames I played, Kirov and Shipwrecks, well, wrecked, until they had ammo and support ships

Wanted to say before reupload: Kirov, in all cases, would be supported by Tu-95RTs (Ту-95РЦ), maritime reconnaissance and targeting aircraft, because missiles greatly outrange sensors of the ship. The plane is in the game, saw it in Enigma's unit review. In real life there also was (and maybe even is rn, but new) satellite system made specially for navy to help find and target US carrier strike groups, but I doubt we'll ever get it in game (maybe as a mod, I hope) Amazing video anyway! I'll watch it again rn. Can't get enough of Sea Power, and your videos really are the best out there

After years of reading about Granat missile swarms it was good to see them doing it. I was wondering how they would target the missiles and I thought that maybe they would fire them with out accurate range to target. As long as they fly them down the bearing of an identified contact they could let the missiles find the range. Assuming target was within max range. The Tu-95RT makes much more sense though.
@Kittalumi16Ай бұрын
@JustJohn505 it would be amazing, I hope we will have control of more than one group, not the entire fleet, but maybe at least land based aviation for recon and ASW Or maybe we will be able to create a group from available ships in a port, according to the task? Hey Wolf, great video! It's always interesting to watch how all these different Cold War ships and weapon systems interact, and Sea Power looks like a bright light in the future of naval sims. With regard to the P700, its delivery systems like the Kirov, and sinking enemy battlegroups, you *need* saturation strikes to push a missile attack through layered enemy defenses, and the best way to achieve that is through mass. You have 20 P700s onboard Kirov, use all of them. If you're attacking an enemy formation that justifies the use of a complex system like the P700, then that automatically justifies expending your entire payload in one go. That's what this missile system is designed to do, it's a fleet-hunting swarm, and the more missiles you commit to the strike, the more wolves you have on the prowl. In committing a portion of your available rounds to an attack instead of the entire set, you not only lose out on mass that you already have sitting around waiting for ships to kill, but you weaken your initial strike on target, and you *also* weaken your follow-up strike on your remaining rounds because you now only have a handful of shots left. You've essentially condemned yourself to a pair of small-mass strikes on a target that requires a large-mass strike to eliminate, and if the enemy eats up your first strike because of its smaller size, you can be for darn sure they're going to eat up the follow-up as well. When it comes to saturation missile strikes and mass, never be afraid to over-kill an enemy fleet. You should be terrified of under-killing it. Rationing ammunition on your ships is never a bad thing, but that's only a rule of thumb, not a hard guideline. As I stated above, P700 is designed to be used en-masse, as a swarm. Think of it as one big missile. Save it for something big and valuable, but when you find something worth using it on, use all of it.
@DecidedlyNinjaАй бұрын
Given that Kirov just fired all of his missiles (fortunately at a conveniently-placed enemy capital ship), I'd say the sensible course of action would be to turn around and go home. What's he supposed to do in the Atlantic with no missiles?

I suppose they could possibly sneak some reloads out on a converted and sufficiently disguised cargo vessel, but Granits are probably too big to allow reloading at sea (if Soviet ships are even designed for that, which I rather suspect they weren't and aren't). I think a challenge for those of us coming to Cold War era games like this is to remember how missile-to-radar technology worked back then. We are used to playing Command or other hi-tech games set in the post-1995 world of semi-active radar homing missiles, like the AMRAAM or Patriot. But in the Cold War, most missiles (SAMs and AAMs) needed active homing radar from the firing platform to guide them all the way home. This was true for basically all Russian missiles, but also NATO missiles like the Phoenix, Sparrow, etc., unless it was an infrared missile fired at short range (Stinger or Sidewinder).
@egoalter1276Ай бұрын
It was true until the mid 70s. AIM64 phoenix, and for the issr R30 and R33 were self guiding, and S300 had composite guidance from the start, and S200 got self guiding missiles eventually. While NATO mostly ignored GBAD, and assumed air supermacy in their doctrinal planning, the soviets always knew they would be on the backfoot in the air, and sunk consudersvle resources and planning into SAM development. Part of this was the experience in Vietnam with S75M, and concluded that the best way of countering SEAD was minimizing the time radar directors irradiate, and displacing them physically from the TELAR units. To this end both s200 and 300 were mounted on sepf propelled trailers with a bominal 5 minute deployment time, and the missile batteries only had tight beam director radars rendering them invisible to elint apart from the tadget the, were painting, with the air search radar only at regiment level.

I love your channel and coverage of sea power. From a realistic perspective once the decision was made to engage those A6s I’d say the military’s philosophy on expect worse case scenario would apply. I would assume there are missiles in the air (activate air search radars), then (assuming the decision to engage is necessary) assure the a6s shoot down, assume there are subs repositioning or torps in the water (deploy sonar buoys), assume there are surface contacts repositioning (plan counter offensive/defense for long range ASM launch), and continue with mission goal under fire assessing as new actions arise (probably aircraft from land base). 15:52

You can't let 2 prowlers lurking around your group like this (at start)... must be priority number one, they send continuous info about your group... you need to ensure the kill with multiple AA missiles on each one, asap. They are like the eye of Sauron above you ! Information is (and always was) the key at war, don't let them gathering all info about you. Modern warfare is, more than ever, a cat and mouse game. Be the cat and not the mouse. Using EMCOM and shooting ennemy planes as soon as possible is the first priority. You need to preserve your "fog of war" for the ennemy. I suppose you could send missile on external radar info on this game.
@bigpoppa1234Ай бұрын

@josephmagana6235Ай бұрын
Shooting a plane is the opposite of EMCON, basically reveals exactly who you are and where you are...
@cladecqАй бұрын
@@josephmagana6235 EMCON : emission control, not weapon control. Did you ever ear about datalink ? Anyway, only one surface radar should be used, the one for the best SAM system (longer range) if there is no datalink. Switching on surface radar ONLY when targets, spotted by helo's radars, enter the range of the sam, and not before. Open radar and immediate fire, with multiple missiles on each target to ensure fast kill, as soon as the target enter the sam range. Then ensure complete destuction of the aerial patrol, not allowing the planes to evaluate visually the situation to report and call for a naval strike, as they did. The goal is to be the first one to deliver the SS salvo, not the one to receive it. You are supposed to be NOT ID as long as you have not fired the first SS attack. That's also why helo reco is very important : to be the first to engage and not to be engaged at first. Plotting a buoy pattern for one or (better cause faster) 2 helo, and an helo to pop up (3000ft is enought, then back to 20ft) sometimes (just short pictures, not "radar on" all the way !) to get a radar picture, while advancing toward the ennemy. THIS helo will tell you when to open the sam radar because he will tell you when ennemy planes are in range of the sam, very important helo, here also, better 2 then one (but at different places), because it is exposed. That's how I would have managed the start of this mission, to try to be the first to attack.
@cladecqАй бұрын
@@bigpoppa1234 he was a radar contact for ennemy AI, but as long as he doesn't open any radar on the fleet, he can't be ID as ennemy except from visual ID. And that's what AI are supposed to do : if it can't ID your radar tag, it send an asset to ID you. But as long as it didn't ID you, he won't engage you. that's all the point to destroy the prowler before visual range, with EMCON status.
@josephmagana6235Ай бұрын
@@cladecq Yes, but the moment that prowler is illuminated he knows now that unknown radar contact is a hostile cruiser group. Realistically there just wasn't a way soviet surface combatants could avoid being detected first in this kind of scenario. They needed some kind of air cover.

Aren't those Soviet anti-air missiles command and semi-active guided? So without air search radar, they shouldn't be effective?

@Kittalumi16Ай бұрын
@ser43_OLDC I meant that the ship has a separate targeting radar for S-300 (and another two, one for each Osa), not the missiles themselves Also, Osa and Tor are ONLY radio command guided, even much more modern Pantsir-S1 still is only command guided, it keeps missiles light, makes them faster and more maneuverable which is really important for SHORAD

Just a tip, you should be able to fire on targets that are outside of range as long as the intercept point is in range... So if the plane is heading right towards you, you can shoot when it's outside the max range as by the time the missile gets to the target the target will then be within the circle and should hit... This should help with engaging targets sooner that come within weapons range.

I think a Tu-142 or a recon Tu-95 would be around to provide top cover. Those planes are part of the navy so they would likely be sent to spot for Kirov on rotation.
