I bought my GT almost a year ago. I like the bike but after upgrading it and learning so much more about bikes and how to upgrade them I think a better purchase for me would have been the Axum or Ardor. I like the GT brand and have full confidence in the strength of the frame but the 34mm straight headtube really kills me. Had I known anything about headtubes and choosing forks I would have gone with a different bike. And honestly with the amount of money I put into the bike I could have just bought something nicer all together like a Roscoe, polygon, etc. Not to mention every time I ride the GT I see more and more how it's really meant for XC, which is what it is advertised as. That being said, I definitely learned a lot about building bikes to fit the type of riding I do from tinkering with the GT. I just wish I looked into some other options before I purchased the GT. But hey, you don't know what you don't know.

I'm in the same exact boat that you're in. I also have a GT Aggressor Pro and upgraded almost everything on it, thanks mostley to this single channel (all i have left to upgrade is the wheelset) but I just bought a new fork for it the Rockshox Recon RL and looking at it now, I wish I had gone with the Mongoose Ardor, if it was available with an XL frame, which it isn't. Right now I'm looking into just buying a new frame with a tapered headtube, I'm probably gonna go with a NukeProof frame, which can be had for around $450. I'll probably pull the trigger on that in spring or summer.
@TheJones_AZ2 жыл бұрын
I love my GT Aggressor Pro but I do wish it had a tapered head tube. If I had to do it over again, I would have found a used bike in the same price range with a tapered head tube.

That's understandable, but if you want more slack then yes but a 44 would be fine to to give more options👍 it is a little steep right now.

New sub here. Also just got an Ardor myself a couple months ago. Ain't been on a bike in over a decade, but for a wally-world bike, it was very impressive for what it is. Now that I've seen this channel and what ya'll done with it, I'm even more satisfied with my purchase. Already changed out seat, grips, pedals and xtech cable/hydro brakes. Next is either a wheelset or hubs. Not sure what will be the best bang for the buck yet.

Revisiting this video, you mentioned the small cockpit on the AL Comp. With the 27.5 wheels and short length, I find that bike very maneuverable, which makes my Axum DP feel like a station wagon on the turns compared to a sports car. I'm thinking of upgrading it and using it more since my son never took to it.

Well hands down it had to be Mr Burgundy! As a GT owner I think we was robbed for the 2nd spot but I’ve never ridden the Aggressor. I would love to see Tick on a small 27.5 Avalanche! Maybe a good used purchase? Growing up as a kid in BMX era I have a bigger affinity and loyalty to the GT and Mongoose brands. I have never connected with the Schwinn brand and wouldn’t buy one but I have to admit they have done a lot to advance the out of the box technology showing up in big box brands. Cheers you two for another great vid!

Last! For now;) Sorry I can't hate on your list but I'd switch spots 2 & 1. I'm more sorry that most of your choices look like kid's bikes to me because I started riding large frames at like 12 or 13 years old. Loved your honorable mention. I just got a Mongoose Dolomite ALX (pretty much the same but aluminum, 8 speed cassette & trigger shifters). Indirectly I have you to thank, for suggesting Chicken Sendies who also giggled like crazy while reviewing his ALX. Wasn't sure I'd like no suspension but fat bikes are fun! I can't wait to put a motor on it so I can get out of my immediate neighborhood without having to put it in the car. Your Malus with a mid-drive would make a beast of a hunting/fishing bike (would blow the wheels off Wolf's Himiway).

I'm 100% with you on the GT Aggressor Pro. I love mine but the one huge thing that's holding it back is the lack of a tapered headtube. Right now I'm looking into buying a new frame because of that. Straight steerer tube air forks are basically phased out with just maybe 3 or 4 high quality name brand air forks out there. At this point really every bike that costs more then $400 (I paid $479.99 in march 2021) should have a tapered head tube.
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS2 жыл бұрын
Agree, that and a cassette!!
@ken234342 жыл бұрын
You can get a conversion headset that gives you the larger bottom bearing. I assume your complaint is related to the small amount of straight steerer forks lately?
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS2 жыл бұрын
@Kenneth Harrod That's the problem. All of the Cane Creek and other adapters are based on 44mm and maybe a 40mm head tube but none for the GT's 34mm head tube.

Big surprise coming up::::::::: my favorite is the Schwinn Axum. I'm 6" at 200lb, the Axum fits me so well I was able to do a rocky tech uphill section that I wasn't able to do with 3 other bikes including a Santa Cruz Bronson. Did I mention the L-Twoo drivetrain and the other upgrades? I have a hard time determining the size of a bike with just the seat tube length, the stack or the reach. Of the 5 bikes that I ride or recently rode, my "medium 18", Motobecane is the most comfortable to ride. I took the stack X reach and divided by 30,000 to give be a number under 10. The Moto was 8.55 the Axum 9.92. Two of my other bikes were 8.66 (sold as a large) and 9.46 (also a large). Under 10 is good for me, under 9 is gooder. At 76 I am done purchasing bikes, but I would use my RxS method on any future purchases like an ebike. The 2005 Specialized that I had felt too small. Unfortunately, I lost the data on it. As long as you are just hanging around waiting for better weather or the price of gas to go down, please do the RxS /30,000 on your two e bikes. xxxooo Bob

@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS I'm new to Wolftick nation but enjoying the budget build ideas and realtime reviews of products. Any suggestions on a tapered fork for the boundary? Man your a big oll boy, nownyou are just in luck! The Honorable mwntion in this video was the Malus, that bike is a freaking blast and Wolfman is 6ft 4 and it fits him. It's beefy, it's BAD and it's big oll boy approved! Take a look at it man, Academy

You guys should do a top 3 full suspensions now, don’t know how many full suspensions you’ve had enough to rank the top 3, I’m guessing the ledge would be 🥇
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS2 жыл бұрын
You are right. The Ledge would definitely be numero uno if we did a full suspension list. I think we are currently at 4 or 5 full squish bikes at the moment. Maybe one day we will rank our favorites. Thanks man👍

Man I was close. But you are right about the GT head tube size and seat post size, it’s hard to find a wide selection of parts. Especially with all the tapered forks out there. One question for you, was that a funnel cloud at the 16:16 mark where you were fishing? That was wicked!
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS2 жыл бұрын
Oh man, you noticed!! LOL That is actually Arkansas 1, it is a nuclear REACTOR!! Very cool huh? That's why I fish there, all the big fish! It's on lake Dardanelle which is the arkansas river. Of you ever come out we are going to have to ride mt nebos Chickala loop, it has a bluff that oversees the entire operation, it is beautiful!! Funny fact, Wolfman is SUPER freaked out by them!!! ☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢☢

Will you guys get a dolomite alx or northrock xc00 to maybe replace the malus. They are both alloy frames and both around 35 pounds. Also the two have more upgrade potential than the malus but alx comes equipped with a cassete while the northrock doesn't. (Fun fact: northrocks are rebranded giant bikes)

Liked the video. No comment on the list as I only have 1 of the bikes and it's opinion based anyways. I bet if you did an auction or maybe a raffle for the older bikes you could get quite a bit of revenue for the channel. Or possibly finding a local kid who can't afford a decent bike. Have them "volunteer" to help w maintenance at the Cats Meow or similar and surprise them w a bike?

I purchased the Axum DP during the bicycle crisis. I like it and hate it. All the components are cheap and untrustworthy. The dropper post cable broke right away. Then the lever on the bottom of the post broke. So now it is just a really heavy seat post. I need to replace just about everything on it to make it rideable. The front fork makes this bike very unpleasant to ride on any surface. It flexes too much for comfort. It also bottoms out on big bumps and sticks and does nothing on small bumps. I am going to replace parts in this order. Fork with Epixon, stem, handle bars, pedals, brakes, seat post, gear set, crank, and hubs. But only if it becomes rideable with a fork and bars.
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS2 жыл бұрын
Man just hang in there and upgrade accordingly. Sounds like you have got it figured out. Take your time and give it chance, let us know how it goes brother. Wish you could rode ours, it's a slick bike!!

@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS Thanks man, I know what to do from watching your videos! I should have mentioned that as a Cannondale rider through the 90's this Schwin frame is remarkable. I am very impressed with the frame. I am also very impressed with how easy a 29 inch wheel rolls over just about everything.

I thought for sure the GT would be #2. Not a fan of the Axum at all, I had one of the original ones and I felt like I was perched up on a tight rope instead of on a bike.
