Everyone focuses on Athena saying "Don't," but ignores the fact that her presence made the situation worse. Odysseus was leaving. He was done. And he was right, too. There were more cyclops. And they couldn't beat one. If they had turned to finish him off, they would have died. Athena showing up and telling him to finish it was almost insulting. It felt like she cared less about the men that would die and more about the glory of her Warrior winning.
@fyysha Жыл бұрын
But thats exactly what her relationship with Odysseus was, she didnt love him as a friend. Of course, he was the man she loved most, but you could not equate it to the love one has for their friends yk. The gods used their heroes as toys, they controlled them, made them fight their monsters and showed them off for their own pleasure. Athena was no different, she cared only for her reputation and how Odysseus made her look. And its sad because youre right, if Athena had not come it wouldve spared Odysseus like 10 years perhaps. Mortal heroes never meant much to the gods, they played them like chess pieces.

@Companion923 ай бұрын
But also their story ist still remembered till this day. Had Ody killed the cyclops or not told him his name most of the fleet would probably made it home. But than this would not have been the story of the Odyssey with it's many adventures and would probably not be remembered like it is today. So Ody singing about how he wants his men and himself to be remembered and saying his name made sure that they would be, even if it made things much worse for them in life. Also love that this is the first time his name is mentioned in the musical.
@zetroll03723 ай бұрын
@@Companion92 Fair point, people want to be remembered. But at the same time, he was already in the Illiad. he was the one who made the trojan horse (the one that ends the war) and one of the reason they had to fight troy (the one who suggested thr content of Oath of Tyndareus). Not only that, unlike Achilles who would rather die young and remembered rather than forgotten, Ody would probably prefer the second one. The song itself was more specifically for the Cyclops to remember to "NOT DO THAT AGAIN" rather than trying to etch his name into history. Though on the original one, it's more of a hubris on Ody's part. A rather odd thing for him to do as he wasn't an outwardly pridefull person or at least wasn't portrayed as someone who would gloat in both Illiad and Odyssey.
@Companion923 ай бұрын
@@zetroll0372 That's all true. But also in the Illiad he was just one of many important characters and in the Odyssey he is the main character. Always thought it odd that he made the mistake to tell the cyclops his name out of hubris. It probably still plays a part, but to me the musical leaves the impression that it was grief over his friends who just died right in front of him, after surviving 10 years of war and being on their way home, what lead to that leap of judgement. Makes more sense to me than just hubris.
@zetroll03723 ай бұрын
@@Companion92 Fair enough. And yep! agree about him shouting his name through grief rather than hubris is better. That would have been suicide, Athena was only looking for herself and her prestige, which is what all greek gods did, they weren't how a God is supposed to be, a REAL mentor, someone how taught morals and righteousness and cared for his people, someone who were truly wise and would teach true wisdom, someone who wasn't so selfish and proud and cared not only for himself and satisfying his whims, that's why I don't consider this gods true gods in their world and moment so to speak where they are considered as such because they don't have what a true god would have to have to be a god, and mercy would be part of that wisdom, if people where really merciful and loved each other and cared for morals and what is really good even in our world and time (or if they would have done that in the past too) there would be no wars, no more stupid bloodshed, war in itself is foolishness, it's not wise, that's why the fact that Athena is both goddess of wisdom AND war (being a lot more strategical, smart and cold-thinking than Ares who would be hot-headed and basically be like a volcano) is jarring and questioning at best

She even reaches out to try and stop him. She is trying to save him from more blood being on his hands. She tells him to turn off his emotions so that he has a higher xhance of winning without losing anyone he cares about. Athena, with the few words she says here, truly shows that she does care for Odysseus. She knows how dangerous the cyclops is alive. It's not that she wanted more bloodshed, but rather, she wanted to save more by ending the one. The singing in the song is phenomenal and we can feel the pain, fear, rage, sympathy, etc just everything. Truly a magnificent piece. The animation of is is shown off extremely well too.

Something I just noticed on this animatic that applies to all of them is the difference between the scenes in Odysseus’ head versus the real world, in his mind he is always highlighted in light grays and whites but in reality he is alway framed with dark grays. This shows how in his head he is the morally correct person but in the real world everything of far more complex. This is the kind of stuff that always floors me when I watch Wolfy’s content! The attention to detail is absolutely stunning!

Interestingly in the Odyssey Polyphemus knew by a prophecy that Odysseus would blind him. He just never imagined a tiny human be the infamous Odysseus. Odysseus was grief striken but also his pride was hurt because he was called a coward so he gave his name to show him he is not afraid of him. Polyphemus also left double course. Either Odysseus never reach home or if he does, reach without his comrades (which happened)

God the blinking eye balls from the dark of the cave to the slumped shoulders and shocked expressions of Odysseus and co during the line "there are more of them" made this moment all the more chilling for me. This animatic made that sequence one of my favorite in this song, 2nd only to "I am your darkest moment" (which, his expression? The dead, tunnel visioned look in his eyes that shows no light in the way only a grieving, angry man can??? Screaming I got shivers) to the end.

CHILLS. LITERAL CHILLS. The transitions paired with the intense expressions right afterwards, not to mention the work in perspective, anatomy and body language? The way Odysseus is tense in the beginning to being more hesitant as if pushing through the grief to do what he has to do? And then the smile at the end when Odysseus reveals his name? It's simply magnificent. I've been learning animation recently and you've been a big inspiration for my works! given what happens in ruthlessness. i like to think that the cyclops isn't talking to his kin, but his father. the coldness of the reply when he says nobody hurt him, portrays a parents disappointment that their child won't tell them what really happend. the despair in the cyclops when he says don't go and not just point around him and say them. means whoever is speaking to him, isn't fully there.

The one part I sort of remember from the original story (as I heard it told anyway) was that when Odysseus was shouting back at the cyclops, he didn't *just* screw himself over by giving his name, which was passed straight to Poseidon. From what I recall, it also alerted the cyclops that the people who blinded him were in the process of escaping, so he hurled massive boulders at them. Sure, he was blind and none of them hit, but Odysseus literally rolled the dice with his entire crew's lives, whether they'd all get killed in one shot, for literally no reason. When they'd already basically escaped!

I love how so much of this story is in the grey area. The fact that yes, they needed food, but they still tried to steal from the cyclops. He had a right to kill them, especially after they slayed one of his sheep. In the end sure the mercy was good, being how they blinded him, the only mistake he made was saying his own fucking name! Leading posiden to kill all but odesses. which is fair when you hurt, steal, and disable one's child

Theres still the disproportionate response and the misunderstanding leading to Odysseus's actions being arguably justified, he tried to apologize and leave the cyclops the sheep they slew, but the cyclops wanted nothing but blood, and blood he got enough to blind himself. Its a multilevel lesson, If you're winning, take your winnings, dont push your fate.
