Haha I am an Austrian living in France, and I have to say I never had much of a culture shock because these two cultures are so similar. Service in Vienna is like in Paris. Waiters are arrogant, but also professional. Austrians are like the French a funny mixture of brutal directness and conservative politeness. In both countries titles are important, and also the 'vous' and the 'Sie'. Never say 'you' immediately, except to children. Both are extreme in their love of cultural things, like literature and music. Both are very proud of their language (in Austria it is the dialect). Both have 2 hours lunch break. In both countries you have to say 'Bonjour' / 'Grüss Gott' when you enter a shop, otherwise you will be ignored. Both do the bisous (it is called Bussi in Austria). And Fun fact: the croissant actually came to France from Austria. Unfortunately France beheaded one of our extravagant queens, otherwise we are much alike.

@@annakoller5382 Well, perhaps not so much today. But I remember my father coming home every day for lunch which my mother used to cook for the family. Most still have at least one hour lunch break. And school is organized so that kids will be home for lunch, still today. France is still extreme today with the sacred two hour lunch break, whereas Austrian work ethics have fallen prey to Americanism. Unfortunately.

The greeting thing really depends on the region and the situation. In the bigger cities "Grüß Gott" will likely come across as old-fashioned, but in many places in the countryside it's still mostly the default greeting (even if you don't believe in a god). In some situations "Hallo" also works as a greeting towards strangers, whereas "Servus" is more informal and usually only used with people you know (but again: depending on the region; in the countryside it's still quite common to be "per Du" - i.e. informal - by default, even towards strangers as long as they are considered to be of about the same status). If you want to play it safe in a public setting, just say "Guten Tag" (in the morning/during the day) or "Guten Abend" (in the evening) - these are the most neutral. Added bonus: they not only work as a greeting but (usually) also as a farewell ("Auf Wiedersehen" would be another farewell that basically works everywhere). Also: we don't say it when entering every restaurant or shop, that would generally be quite obtrusive. It's mostly used in smaller shops, with staff attending customers (e.g. from behind a counter) and/or few customers in the room, where a greeting is in order (or even expected in some regions). Basically: if the place is small enough for you to draw attention when entering or when the setting implies a personal interaction with the staff. But no Austrian would greet 100 people in a large restaurant or store. So - as with any social interaction, anywhere in the world - there are unwritten regional/local rules and it all very much depends on the 'vibe' of the situation.

@GervinSchwarz "Servas" (especially in that dialect form) would be considered very colloquial and informal in most places. It can work in rural areas that have the 'default informality' described above, but in bigger cities it unmistakably gives you away as a "Landei" if used in an formal/public setting ;-)

Yes, read the situation when entering a public place: in a busy grocery store, you wouldn’t announce yourself with a greeting, unlike in small shops, offices, etc. where workers are eyeing you, meet their gaze and say a greeting. When leaving places, say either “wiedersehen “ or “wiederschön“; the “auf“ is often dropped. To complicate matters, if either the customer or employee says one of those, the respondent says the other one.

I am Austrian myself, and I think your tips are very accurate. For potential tourists, I just want to point out that the beauty of our country clearly lies in the countryside and the small villages. It's a big part of Austrian culture. Some old farms are over 500 years old and, with some modern adaptations, are still inhabited. In some old cabins, when you are hiking, you can get a sense of how people lived here hundreds of years ago.

I spent a week in Austria in the 1980s, and it sounds as though the things you mentioned are the same as my experience back then. Something that I'll never forget is a lesson I learned in Salzburg. My travel companion and I were typical Americans, we went into a pastry shop and didn't greet the people behind the counter. We just ran up to the display case and started talking about the pastries. I glanced up to see their faces, and they didn't have to say anything. I just knew that I was rude by their standards of not acknowledging them. So from that time forward, I always look for the person/persons working in a shop when I go in and acknowledge them in some way as a sign of respect. I try to learn the common greeting. - The Gruss Gott was also in Munich. The B&B keeper let me know that, when I said "Guten Morgen". Maybe it's a religious/regional difference. Anyway, I've been afraid to go back to Salzburg for fear that it's not as magical as it was when I visited it. I'd love to go back to see more of Austria.

My late husband and I visited Austria at least once every year and I still do go there. Although I love Vienna I have not seen a single KZbin video by anyone that goes to Klagenfurt our favorite place in Austria. So few Americans go there when we would book our hotel they never needed our names. We were just “The Americans”. The beautiful Wothersee is a draw for people from all over Europe. There are ancient ruins and beautiful churches and museums. The Christmas market is followed by the New Year’s market. And a photo op by the Klagenfurt dragon is a must. Please visit this lovely area and include it in one of your videos.

As an Austrian: Klagenfurt is wildely overrated. The City is a basic middle European City without anything special to offer and the shoreline of Wörthersee is privatized up to like 85%, meaning you can't access the Lake itself without driving 45 minutes out of K-furt (by bike)

American living in Austria here. One small correction: tap water in German is "Leitungswasser". Also you're right about ALWAYS greeting whenever you enter a shop or would like to speak to someone, however you don't always have to say "Grüß Gott". A simple "Guten Tag" also suffices. Point is however, like in France, it's obligatory to ALWAYS greet whenever entering a shop/store or whenever you'd like to speak to someone. Not doing so is a sure sign of a catastrophic upbringing, at least that's what Austrians will undoubtedly think. Another must is saying "auf Wiedersehen" or simply "Wiedersehen" or "Wiederschauen" whenever you leave a shop/store. That's also obligatory and don't be surprised when EVERYONE in the store, even complete strangers, replies to you in chorus "auf Wiedersehen!". It's just a reflex habit in Austria 🙂 Regarding service, I've been living here in Austria for over 20 years and during that time I've seen a VAST improvement in service. When I first came here there was NO SUCH THING as service, at least not what we're used to in the US. After Austria joined the EU and had to start competing with other EU countries, they had no choice but to up the level of service to attract and keep customers who now had a choice of where to spend their money. And so now you actually get greeted and they no longer talk down to you like you're some dirty bum off the street. Believe me, I got PLENTY of that during my first few years in Austria, at banks, in the supermarket, in stores - unless you had a Dr. before your name, they cared not one iota for your feelings. Dressing down anyone who had the AUDACITY to disturb your peace and tranquility was sort of a favorite pastime of Austrian store clerks and civil servants - it's a cherished tradition going back hundreds of years. But things have changed and although they're still nowhere near the level of American customer service, they have become far more professional, though not necessarily friendly.

There's plenty of really good advice in this video. I speak from experience, having lived in Austria with my Austrian partner for over 6 years! One thing to add: if you order wine at a restaurant or café, it usually comes with a glass of (free) water!

I'm glad you didn't hold back on mentioning the "guy with the beard" ... really, I get to meet a lot of people from other countries (work, vacation, or just online...) and whenever I tell them that I am from Austria, A LOT of them would just start making stupid comments about him right away. I really wish people would stop doing that. 😞

The sound of music is well enough known. maybe 30 years ago , not really, but now , yes. Also people are genuinely nice. Restaurant service people are many times foreign help. And they are normally rude especially in tourist areas. Go to a smaller city (Graz is fantastic) or town gasthaus and it is a Sound of Music experience. Right absolutely for being the centre of Europe for 800 years and there is a pride. Nature is a big thing. Nice summary and work , thanks,

The CAT has zero stops to the airport, it goes from Wien Mitte to the Schwechat directly. You also can check in your lugguage when you enter the lobby for the CAT. This way you don´t have to carry that stuff around all over place on your own. I think that is worth the few Euros you pay more. The seats are way more comfortable and you have a second level for the scenery on top. Thanks for sharing.

Also in tourism areas maybe waiters are just, overworked and you dont have to tip, seriously its tipping is nice to do, and its common, but also you have no pressure to tip. Like its nice because its nice to have a small bonus always , but not demanded nessesary like apearently in america. And being a waiter is more about getting your job done and be professional and seen if you have to only, and like get orders right, not be the most friendly ever, polite should be enough. And yes polite grumpy, is still polite. And if you have issue with a waitor, ask, sign clear and someone comes, they might finish their thing before but someone comes, if yo need something, ask, dont be shy to signal. Donrt be rude, but dont be shy either. Just ask if you need something. And if someone forgot which happens, ask. Generally even id people can look grumpy, some are busy, some arent, but plenty people really help outr, so asking is good too. Got lost, ask. Chances are you get told where to go if they know. And really rural aras are good too, and often by train or bus reached. Recomand Wachau and the weinviertel if you are intersted, in Wine. Generally if yo are intersted in wine, go to wine areas, which in Vienna, isnt really one, through you get good in supermarkets. But there are more rural wine areas. Austria is a big worldrenown for wine as well and Vienna isnt really a wine area. there are districts of outer vienna thou that are thou, with, authentic wine and Heurigen culture. and not too expensivce wine as well, above 3 or 4 wine should be good. Yeah yeah ther is good beer too ad vienna is more Beer than a wime area, throgh ther is good Wine just, look for the better wine locals if? Oh Vindobona is, interesting too as, ok there are literal guides because ther eare damned much Museums and, look it up, becase then go what interests you. ÖBB was worse in the past, but really is on point now. Unlike in germany where, itsa infamous wild, but still decent trains, but austra better and on point mostly. And water used to be free, but a lot places got annoyed with people just geting in locals to dringk a free water its common to have a mandatory but not high. And to coffee you get water. Its just, locals got annoyewd with people asking for free water so it got a minimal price. By the way ther is no issue to fill up water or go to a toilet to fill up water. Its just , annoyance with people ordering a table , and just free water. Ther are plenty water sources in vienna, free, to drink. you can refill very often public too. And locals do have an sometimes if you areebt a customer, a coin to the toilet sometimes, sometimes they expect to be polite and consume something, you dont have to, just, its expected but be fast and dont get attention and it should be fine? Through ther is good coffee so, coffee breaks are nice, so thats if you go in a coffee toilet, ok just dont make a scne and its nice to take a coffe if you are in mood and, coffee is nice or tea there.

The whole thing a bout paying for bathrooms is common across Europe, so just carry a few dollars (in the local currency) of coins for things like that, because they will turn you away in some cases. For me I'm kind of similar when it comes to souvenirs in that for myself at least, I like to find non-food items that I can take back to the US with me, and keep (my most common is probably shot glasses, even though I don't drink, and yes they are probably all made in China) but at least it is something small Ican bring back that isn't consumed or goes bad, as part of a souvenir in my opinion is something you can bring back that reminds you of your visit and the memories, even if it's something small like the shot glasses (as they are quite cheap in most countries). I will probably start looking for more true authentic souvenirs though moving forward, and a tip for travelers on that is to venture outside of the tourist areas to find the genuine items (you can sometimes find them in the tourist areas) but I have found when looking the few times I've traveled to foreign countries, is that the small towns are generally the best and you'll likely find genuine real crafts and clothing, and not mass-produced stuff that comes from China.

Austrian here: if the service is bad, do not tip! Waiters in Auatria do not earn minimum wage or something like that, they earn enough to live a comfortable life. Tipping is for good and outstanding service, a sign of appreciation for a job well done. If my waiter is rude or the service is lack luster, I do not tip. So don't feel pressured to do it :)
