I got sick the first night in Cusco. We landed an went to hotel, had some coca tea an then went on city tour. We knew that we should have just chilled for the day, but we figured that it was mostly driving so we be ok, plus it was only 4 hrs. About half way through the tour I started getting headache. When we made it back to hotel it felt like I was short of breath. After 6 hrs of that I went to clinic. I didn't believe in altitude sickness but it is serious. So take it from me an chill when you land

Yeah that altitude. I acclimated after the first day, but I noticed it made it hard to sleep. I guess the combination of your heart beating harder for oxygen and all the coca tea you consume to mitigate the altitude combines to make it a bit tough to sleep at night. Cusco was well worth the physical strain though, I really enjoyed the city.
@toroniman4 жыл бұрын
Oh and right about where you guys were sitting to make this video, I kept having these guys wanting to clean my shoes. Be careful of those guys because they'll talk about how cheap it is, but then start adding more and more things and add up each little charge until its not so cheap anymore. Scam.

I loved Cusco! The Peruvians are the sweetest. The only problem is the altitude. My problems were loss of appetite (which I should welcome) and I also had sleep apnea, which I've never experienced. It took me about four days to acclimate. The coca didn't really help. I would go back in a minute! Also loved Lima which is at sea level.
@cliffhounshell83204 жыл бұрын
Coca tea is an appetite supressor. I couldn't sleep either. The altitude does that I think, when you can't quite get enough oxygen. Lima was beautiful to - but the traffic there is insane as compared to just crazy like Cusco. Now I was envious, my 8 year old son didn't have any altitude issues lol.

@@qiqiauclair2894 I visited Lima actually before Cusco. Overall I'd agree, though Lima has a couple beautiful districts and some great food. Definitely worth visiting Lima if you have the time, but just for some highlights.

Interesting you talk about the traffic. Unless things have changed in the last ten years, the traffic (particularly in Lima) was very safe. The traffic lights are seemingly just for decoration so when you want to cross, we found after watching the locals, it was best to just walk out into the road and catch the eye of the drivers. Everyone stopped for us and didn't seem bothered by us walking into traffic. I took this habit back with me to the UK and nearly got run over on my way to a new job the day after I came back from Peru! One other thing for Cusco specifically are drug dealers. I was 17 when I went with my parents so we weren't approached, but other European tourists in our hotel that weren't on family holidays said they were often being approached by drug dealers at night, and I know of cases of tourists being approached by dealers asking them to import drugs to their home countries. Drug laws in South America are severe. You don't want to spend the next ten years in a Peruvian prison.

Access to machu picchu is now limited and you must book ahead. We were there two weeks after you and stayed in the sacred valley, Urubamba. It poured buckets of rain the night before. The train to machu picchu shut down mid-day but we got down later. The next day it was closed. Machu Picchu has shut down multiple times in the last decade during the rainy season. Your post about Lima was mostly true but, there are truly only two safe districts. Mira Flores was were we also stayed and another next to it. Out of those districts were our tour went through were not clean with garbage in the streets. Bad Traffic yes. Took full boxes of Pepto and Imodium and I had an issue after day 8 of 11. The market smells are indescribable. We were overcome by it in Puno. Lake Titicaca was great. Inca Cola tastes like cream soda. Guinea pig tastes horrible, alpaca is good.
