I bought a fantastic hand painting from one a young man who had a nice collection of art in the Plaza De Armas. It cost less than 15 USD and I gave it as a gift to my mother and is now nicely framed in the kitchen. Probably one of the nicest and original souvenirs I brought back from Peru. The painting was a line of peruvian women in colorful traditional clothing, it was very well painted and original. I agree with the dog poop issue! And yes, peru is without doubt the most memorable country I have visited in south america, please visit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love that Cusco has many vegetarian and even vegan versions of peruvian dishes, amazing breakfast and coffee in the market and cheap collectivos to explore the countryside by yourself. And compared to Lima, the air quality was great and I had no trouble breathing! Also the mountains everywhere (especially in the sacred valley) are truly beautiful! 😍

Was there in 1973. No traffic, no hustlers, no hassle - and a big two cent copper coin would let me hear "How Do You Sleep?" and "Long Cool Woman In a Black Dress" on the jukebox. Tourist train to Machu Picchu cost $30 dollars. Took the "Indian" train for 30 cents. Picked wild strawberries up there among the ruins.

These videos are very reassuring as my son has applied to do a summer study abroad program in Lima at the Universidad del Piura, which includes trips to Cusco and Machu Pichu. Good to know it is safe (with common sense precautions of course)and that the people are friendly as part of the purpose of his trip is to become more fluent in Spanish (one of his minors). Totally enjoyed my visit to Cusco in Sept 22. The people are wonderful and I made several friends whom I keep in touch with. If you speak Spanish it is a plus. If you can speak Quechua, the Peruvian Andes native language you will be given particular respect. At the end of the day most Peruvians earn so much less than the average tourist that visits, I bought two paintings from a street vendor but did not pay the original ask prices and haggled some but don't go crazy because they usually have a bunch of kids to feed. The food is awesome, so fresh and so tasty at crazy low prices to what most of us are used to.. I did not feel hassled by the street vendors and a simple 'no gracias' was sufficient. Just one small word of advise, if you really need that cute photo of holding the baby Alpaca confirm that the price agreed is for multiple Alpacas that might be in the shot.
@jkinnear812 жыл бұрын
You guys really have been everywhere. Recently I had a talk with my girlfriend as she's hitting the big Four-O this year and I asked her babe where in the world would you like to go for your 40th. Guess what, she wants to go to Peru and Machu Picchu. I've been 10 years ago back when I took a sabbatical year as a broke young professional. I used to travel very much like Gabriel from Gabriel traveller if ever you saw any of his videos. That time I visited Lima (not my favorite city but the best ceviche ever. I definitely recommend casa Azul in Miraflores for anyone going to Lima), I visited Huacachina, I am friends with a dune buggy driver as I was friends with his sister 1st and her and I are still in touch and still connect as she has family in Toronto where I go often and she is in Italy, I saw her in Rome last fall and met her newborn daughter and husband. After Huacachina, I went to Paracas to see the Penguins 🐧 then went on a Cessna flight over the Nazca lines (a bit of a scary experience if you are uneasy with flying on small planes), I hiked the Colca Canyon with the condors and visited the white city of Arequipa. Where I had the cheese flavored ice cream. I tried the Guinea pig in Cusco. And had plenty of Pisco sours 😋 and cusqueña beers. Yum. I 100% agree about the altitude sickness and it does suck but the place where I had a problem with the altitude was Bolivia when I went there in 2016 and took a 3 day 4X4 tour from Chile to Salar de Uyuni. You go up this massive road that climbs for miles and the 1st night my head was completely spinning like crazy and my stomach felt very uneasy as if I was on a constant roller coaster. Not my favorite travelling experience. Anyway, I am looking forward to travel back to Peru after all these years and have my gf experience it for the 1st time.

Just left Cusco on March 19 2024. Has to be the child prostitution capital of the world. There’s a 14 year old girl every 10 feet shoving a massage flyer in your face. Avoid the market in the evening. Despite holding my wife’s hand somebody was able to steal her phone from her coat pocket. A true professional scum bag. Traffic sucks!!! A good hotel here is equivalent to a 4-5 star back home. Amazing service. Not a single church or museum allows pictures. True dark ages mentality. The archaeological site is a must. Don’t use Cusco as a base for Machu Picchu. It’s a 12-14 hour day with a tour. Instead visit Ollayantambo, see the archaeological site, stay there, then take the train to Machu Picchu and arrange this with ur tour guide. We left at 3:30 am on our tour and didn’t get back to our Cusco hotel until 8:45 pm

Peru is really close to the ecuador so it is generally tropical, but since cusco is in the highlands they experience a great variety of weathers (the wind vs mountains). This time of year is considered the wet season, so inconsistent rain is the norm for great part of the country.

Beautiful place but ah yes the touts and sellers there are hardcore in Cusco and Ollantaytambo! Can be intense if you're alone. Another tip for anybody that's a smoker, the people of Cusco are VERY sensitive about smoking overall. In planning our trip I’m upset about how much cash is required to make things happen. Every thing requires a bit of cash and I have been told that if the cash is American they want crisp new bills. Not sure about ATM accessibility and I really don’t want to be running around handing out at an ATM. The other thing that concerns me is the availability of public toilets. That could be an issue especially since we are seniors. My biggest issue is there are zero toilets inside Machu Picchu and if u go out to access the lone toilet at the entrance u cannot get back in with ur existing ticket. Considering between hotel pickup, a 3 hr train ride, a 40 minute bus ride to get there, the whole Machu Picchu thing is worrisome Lastly my son is a D1 athlete who gets massage as part of his training. He loves massage. Are the massages legit or more like happy ending times
