It’s been 11 years since the Avengers first teamed up to protect the MCU, and a LOT has happened since. The team got a new headquarters, added some new members, broke up, reunited, and saved the world a few times in between. But today I want to talk about OTHER Avengers teams, and I don’t mean alternate versions from the multiverse.
Doug: Oh, you mean the other Avengers with Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes fighting Sean Connery with umbrellas?
Ryan: No, I definitely DON’T mean that, either. And I also don’t mean other Marvel superteams like the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Defenders, the Midnight Sons, or the Revengers. [CLIP: The Revengers]
I’m talking about Avengers offshoots, various spinoff versions of the team that exist in the comics. If you watch this channel, you’ve probably heard me mention a few before, like the Dark Avengers and the Young Avengers.
But today I want to FOCUS on these other Avengers teams and their members. I’m going to go through which ones we’ve sort of seen on screen already, which ones are unlikely to but COULD show up, and which ones are almost DEFINITELY being set up to join the MCU - and soon.
Doug: Oooh, you mean the Great Lakes Avengers.
Ryan: What? No, Doug, I definitely don’t mean Doorman, Big Bertha, or the rest of the Great Lakes Avengers.
Doug: But the signs are all but obvious. Do you even WATCH these movies, Person?
Ryan: Okay if there’s time, we’ll get to the Great Lakes Avengers. But first, I want to talk about slightly more prominent teams, like the New Avengers. The New Avengers was a Marvel comics series that began in 2004 and was written by Brian Michael Bendis.
The New Avengers, like some other “offshoots,” are technically a direct continuation of the main Avengers. Part of the Civil War arc, members of the Avengers who don’t comply with the Superhuman Registration Act make up the New Avengers - still performing their world-saving duties, even though they’re wanted by the government. In the comics, members of the New Avengers include Cap, Bucky, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Echo, and Wolverine. Even though they’re never explicitly called this, we’ve pretty much seen the New Avengers in the MCU already. Actually, you could interpret two separate groups as the New Avengers.
There’s the NEW lineup we saw at the end of Age of Ultron, when Iron Man, Hawkeye, Hulk, and Thor are succeeded by Rhodey, Vision, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, and your Mom. At the time, many fans considered them the MCU version of the New Avengers, even though they had nothing to do with the Superhuman Registration Act or being outlaws. (The rationale being that the MCU will often take pretty wide liberties with some comic storylines.) [CLIP: Trevor Slattery.]
The “real” New Avengers would be the team that DOES go on the lam after refusing to sign the Sokovia Accords - the MCU version of the Superhuman Registration Act.​ This includes Cap, Bucky, Falcon, and Black Widow. They basically remain as vigilante fugitives for two years until the Snap, and besides a solo adventure with Black Widow, we never really got to see what this crew was up to during this time period.
While the MCU has moved waaaaay on, it would be really cool if we got a flashback movie or series that takes place in the period between Civil War and when we see them show up in Scotland. It would be a great way to bring Chris Evans back without convoluting continuity, and we could see more of how Vision and Wanda’s relationship blossomed. It could even serve as a prequel series to the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and be titled “The New Avengers.”
OR it could be titled the “Secret Avengers,” another name that some fans gave this group during Phase 3. Again, this would be a loose MCU interpretation of the comics’ Secret Avengers, which was a black-ops team led by Cap in the post-Civil War era. Unlike the New Avengers, the comic book Secret Avengers WERE sanctioned by the government, but faced off with Nick Fury of all people. [CLIP: “Want to see my lease?”]

That's not why the new Avengers were formed. They were formed after Avengers Disassembled and the Breakout story line which had nothing to do with the super hero registration act. That was from the later Civil War story.

While I didnt read The Great Lakes Avengers, thinking about a random team of people with no history, or initial interest in, fighting crime getting together to stop some low level local threat in the midwest could be hilarious. Potentially even an opportunity to make fun of genre more, like a PG version of Deadpool/The Boys.

Hey Doug, how would you feel if they did the Pet Avengers? We’ve got Cosmo, Goose, Alligator Loki and Throg (If he can get out of that Jar he was in during Loki season 1.) We also got Morris and a ton of the Mythical Creatures from Ta Lo. And on top of that we’ve got Lucky the Pizza Dog! Since Black bolt showed up in Dr. Strange 2 and the X-men are coming, I could see it possible that Lockjaw and the dragon Lockheed show up! Do you guys think it’s likely? How do you think they’d show up? I’d say for me I’d like a Disney+ show, just so we can get some real time with these pet friends! :)

Actually, in the comics, the New Avengers are pre-Civil War. The series began after Avengers Disassembled in late 2004. Civil War was 2006.

I was rewatching the Avengers series these last couple days....... And I noticed that you REALLY need Steve Rogers for a "team" to work effectively on screen. Between the courage, morale and heart being all embodied in one person, I wonder who's going to play that type of figurehead for the next avengers. I'm not really seeing how Falcon can serve that on screen just yet

The Avengers I'd love to see on screen (but would probably never happen) Ironically the most realistic Avengers "team" the 50 states Avengers. In the comics, they came up with the interesting idea to draft heroes and place a superhero team in every state. Almost as if the Avengers were a branch of the military. I could see a Disney+ show about a B or C level team from Main or Utah fighting A.I.M. or The Absorbing Man, and with cameo appearances by OG Avengers.
