@@jaexotics ok, introducing or supplementing the population. The main reason they aren’t found in numbers in the cascades is its marginal habitat for them. They haven’t been hunted in a century there so that’s not the reason. California is actually better habitat than Oregon or Washington.

@HubertofLiege

@@jaexotics thing is, they’ve always been here, and are in small numbers, because it’s the very edge of they’re range. So history has taught us they won’t thrive because they haven’t, and bear people interactions will dramatically increase and that leads to dead bears. It’s a dumb political idea to push grizzlies back into the cascades.

I've seen three of them, together along the coastline about 40 miles south of the Oregon border. I heard them far-off for hours and hoped they were not stuck between the cliffs and the water, but they were.. They didn't seem to care I had a giant bonfire and slow walked curiously to about 30 yards from me, before I started backwards walking up the bank of a stream and back to the road. They stayed on the beach. I had hotdogs cooking if it matters. Can't remember if I got to eat them or left them.

I had the rare opportunity to see a male by stumpy meadows this year. About 15’ from the jeep. I didn’t know they were here before the sighting. Although beautiful, I’m afraid of what is to come when packs grow. There is already a large predator problem with bear and mt lions.

@roberts735 are you sure it wasnt a coyote? Yes there are wolves in lassen south of tahoe but bears won't really be a problem for them especially because (for know) we don't have grizzlies and black bears won't really do anything. A pack of wolves would scare away a mt lion. Plus we already have wolves packs in california that are slowly starting to thrive.

They deserved their place in California as a second chance because they are a keystone species in the ecosystem to control deer 🦌 populations and keep nature in balance. I would loved to see grizzly bears 🐻 and jaguars 🐆 reintroduce to California too since they are native to California as well. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️

I think wolves, or an analogue, are inevitable. By introducing a species ahead of the coywolf curve they are just picking which one they end up with. Where I live in NY we are fully experiencing the larger coywolves coming down from the NY/Canadian border, and I'm way downstate. Coyotes went from 30lb yappers to howling 50+ lb'ers, and you can hear it every single night. They also seem to pack up more frequently, although they clearly live that coyote life most of the time. It's an unstoppable fact of life that these larger coyotes will spread right back towards their origin in the southeast, spreading the larger wolf genes as they go. It's basically just like the feral hog issue. It's absurd to say that there won't be risks and costs with introducing wolves btw. Far better to just own it. Pets are absolutely on the menu, and so are children who are small enough and unattended. That's already the case here in the northeast with the larger coyotes.

Wolves are a pain in the butt. I'll leave it at that. Im not a farmer....just an outdoorsman. I have seen them absolutely demolish deer populations and what used to be herding areas. I have no issues with them in the wild but they need to be kept in check and a hunting season opened for them as well. People who live 10 hrs away and in major urban areas vote to not have seasons because they are cute animals and do not deal with their repercussions or them decimating a huge food source. But hey...I'm sure i know what gonna get commented here anyway. But they're soooo cute though. 😂

It's not like he's a working scientist or anything. Do you hear yourself? What exactly do you know about predator-prey ecology that the rest of us don't? Please enlighten us oh learned traveller.

Source: "Trust me bro" Oh, you've personally watched wolves kill off an entire deer population? With your own eyes, first hand? Where exactly? Please cite the specific deer population, the specific wolf population, the specific years and how exactly you established both that the deer population did indeed crash and that the wolves were responsible for that decline and not other factors like winter temperature, disease or poaching. I couldn't care less about wolves being "cute", I care about ecosystems being diverse, functioning and complete for both human and animal needs.

I’m a hunter in California and the wildlife management practices in this state are bound by strange laws. No predator hunting has created a massive amount of mountain lions and the deer are struggling. In fact when I was buying a deer tag I was basically given a bear tag. Which I’m stoked about, but adding another apex predator to the woods means the already crappy deer season will get worse.

I think it can work so long as neither side is too extremist. Wolves and ranchers have been living side by side for thousands of years, so it’s not impossible. That being said I think ranchers have the right to shoot wolves that enter their property especially when the wolves are actively predating on their animals. However ranchers should also be required to wolf proof their properties as much as possible such as with guard dogs and electric fencing, and I think it would be pretty reasonable for the government to step and assist with that. However one of the biggest issue with ranchers in the west is that they use public lands for pasture, but wildlife should take priority there, and ranchers will just have take their chances if they want to continue using public land for pasture, otherwise stick with the private land they own.
