I was skiing in Romania back in the 80s. Came down the blue run at dusk alone. An entire pack of wolves were crossing the run. These were not ordinary wolves, they had big chests and narrow waists. I froze, about 10 slowly walked past the last one looked at me, then looked away and dissappeared into the forest. I broke the world blue run speed after that.

I was living on a farm as a kid in eastern europe, one day I woke up and my grandfather would bring all types of cool and weird stuff back. Baby pigs from birth etc and he brought this grey metallic dog looking creature but it was too big to be a puppy and had razor sharp teeth. We didn't keep it because my auntie had her fears and knew what it was, I'll never forget how it looked though and how he described finding it in the middle of the farm field, it's mother must of been killed. This has brought back that memory, and that's probably the closest I'll ever get to seeing a wolf cub in the flesh.

In Quebec, Canada, I saw a wolf once at about 50 feet when I was hunting small game. My friend went near a group of evergreen trees grouped together on the edge of a maple tree forest and I was expecting to see a hare or a grouse coming out of it. What a surprise to see a big ass wolf! It got out of his hiding and stopped; it looked at me with its deep eyes, and then it went away. I had my twelve gauge with no intention of using it as I only kill what I want to eat with little effort: hare, ducks and geese- especially grouse, which if close to suburb areas, requires some skills as one has 2 or 3 second to shoot before it disappears in the forest. Besides it would have been cruel to shoot at a wolf at this distance with bird cartridges. But I was so happy to have the opportunity to see a wolf, a beautiful animal. This is anchored in my memory for ever.

The wolves were a natural fixture, "pioneers" settling out west killed them off. The elk population has shot up, since they no longer have any natural predators, to the point that they are causing a lot of the natural foliage to become extinct. Since their reintroduction elk numbers are decreasing, and many plant species are starting to return, the wolves are essential in maintaining balance and harmony.

Im from Texas. As kids we’d play “tag” on four wheelers across a ranch with many acres. You basically try to catch up to someone on another four wheeler and if you can chase them down, and get within a few feet that is considered “tagging” them. Anyways... late one night we had about 10 four wheeler game at night all through the woods, cross pasture, etc well a cousin and I were riding to get away and we turned off in the woods shut it down and killed the headlight, we sat silent off a trail up in the woods mayybe three minutes while my other cousin drove by not knowing we were there. Once his headlights had disappeared around the dark bend of the wooded trail I turned my headlights on to drive away in the opposite direction in the moment I turn my headlights on there was a wolf about 4 feet from me staring us down. It froze in its tracks, instantly I cranked the four wheeler and screamed as I was startled, I cranked that four wheeler and we sped off (nearly throwing my cousin off the back as I accelerated which is a family joke now) and later changed our underwear

Joe, the wolves that follow the caribou herds can be up to 200 lbs. As a kid I hunted wolves in Canada when they had a $25.00 bounty on them in the early 60's. Now, when you see a wolf in Canada, they are gone in 10 seconds. In the US, they just sit there and stare at you. The original wolves introduced in the US were raised by humans and have never been shot at. So they are not afraid.
@cseguin5 жыл бұрын
Wolves attacking humans basically _never_ happens . . . when I worked in forestry I can recall being shadowed by a pack of wolves as I went about my surveys - and I _never_ worried about it . . . if I were injured or somehow incapacitated - _then_ - I would worry . . . but if you're healthy they just watch from a distance . . .

Thus, usually the tribes do not fuck with each other unless one of them has hit really hard times and is vulnerable. I think I saw wolf once too. It was a cold, winter evening, I started hearing howling in the distance. I came across large area and about 50m in front of me I saw bunch of dog like figures running towards me. I was petrified, I couldn't move at all... suddenly, I heard my dad's voice calling me "we're leaving immediately, the ZOO is about to close"

As someone who grew up in rural, northern Wisconsin, the reason why some of us don't like wolves isn't because humans re-introduced them, its because they kill our cows and dogs but we are not allowed to shoot them to protect our animals because wolves are marked as a protected and endangered species. To 'compensate' for our lost cattle (they didn't compensate us for our dog who was literally torn apart by wolves), you have to be able to prove to an inspector that it was a wolf that killed the animal; which makes sense, but the amount of proof the require is unreasonable to acquire and even if you do prove it was a wolf, the compensation is minimal. So in summary, you've got self-reliant farmers with guns that are used to protecting their land and herds from pests, who have their hands tied while a predatory species preys on the animals under their care.

That's the fucking problem city dwellers don't realize. There are actually a lot of these idiots that genuinely believe canines like wolves and coyotes eat a plant based diet in the wild. Completely out of touch with nature, but that make the policy for everyone.

Largest wolf ever hunted and killed in the US- 230lb in Alaska. I have personally seen three road kill wolves in Wyoming. Sadly two close together likely mates or pack mates. As big or bigger than a large deer. When I lived in Billings MT there was a municipal warning that a large male wolf estimated at 200lb was spotted near a park hiking trail on the outskirts of the city. Based on all I have read humans have little to fear from wolves unless the animal is sick or starving. Walking your dog in their presence creates another, much higher, level of concern. Your canine is a threat AND a potential meal. When you traverse through areas where there are large animals that may kill you (bear, moose, elk, mountain lion) be armed. It's for your own safety.
@burtan2000 Жыл бұрын
Those large wolves are uncommon but not rare. That giant one in the video must be 200 lbs. the coat is like 3 thick so it's not quite as big as it appears but it's not 130 pounds. That thing looks like an avg fully grown black bear which are like 200-300 pounds (at least here in upstate NY). Wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone but there had been a healthy breeding population in Minnesota for decades. Like many hundreds to several thousands - but it's mostly in Boundary waters which straddles border so they come in and out of canada thru this massive wilderness area. Montanans immediately wanted to kill the poor creatures like fuck you guys, those magnificent beasts were here long before you were! I don't give a shit about your few cattle! Besides, the govt reimbursed them anyway. I'm a little more sympathetic to pet owners that lose a pet but maybe don't leave your pet outside. i guess that's easier said than done for the 84 yr old grandma with arthritis. I love my country like mad but not always loving my countrymen and i'm sure they feel same

Some of the eastern coyotes get real big compared to the western coyotes. The farther north you go they get bigger as well and have much different and fuller furs. A coyote in the U.P. of Michigan is going to be gigantic compared to a coyote in southern California. The coyotes in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario are known for taking down moose. There are also wolf/coyote hybrids in some parts of North America, known as the Coywolf.

A friend of mine had this huge 70kg caucasian shepard dog who btw died a few years back at the age of 18, and the dog was an absolute savage. In his 18 years of life that dog killed two wolves, six coyotes and more than a dozen foxes, all while protecting the cattle. I remember us riding our bikes down to this valley one time, where the cattle used to be and the dog greeting us and then taking us into the forest to show us the wolf he killed. It is still the most fascinating and bloody sight I've ever layed my eyes on. That fella pretty much crushed that wolf's skull. Took the dog to the vet afterward and he was fine, he just had one broken tooth.

Minnesota does have a shit load of wolves, my car broke down one night on a dirt road near my old house and I had to walk back late at night, I came around a corner and a dog like animal crossed the road at the same time, about twenty yards away from me, we looked at each other for about 30 seconds then it jogged off. Two days later I was driving on the same road and at that same spot there was a massive nearly black haired wolf, beautiful animal

People who’ve actually seen wolves won’t mistake them for coyotes. Minnesota has an estimated 3000 wolves, but most folks up nort think that’s crazy low. Wisconsin’s wolf population came from Minnesota naturally. They just wandered in. Their population is estimated at a bit over 1,000.

People today are not aware of the fact that wolf attacks were a serious problem in Europe up until the mid 1800's. The advancement of firearms is thought to be the main factor in the decline of wolf attacks. It was very common for wolves, during harsh winters, to enter towns and villages to have a snack.

Joe's knowledge of wolves is very limited and some things he is even misinformed on. The wolves in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the U.P. of Michigan have always been there. They were never re-introduced like the Yellowstone wolves. The numbers in Wisconsin and Michigan were down for a while but they never went away altogether, now the numbers are up. There has always been a shitload of wolves in Minnesota, more wolves there than any of the Western states by far.
