I wouldn’t like to see the Lynx brought back. That died out naturally, not through hunting. Nothing that died through natural Darwinism should be reintroduced. The wolf was hunted to extinction due to British bounties placed on their heads and were hugely prevalent here. I think Ireland had the most forest cover and highest population of wolves than any other European country until the British. Our forest cover is now one of the lowest in Europe (was at 70-80% now at 11%). If wolves were reintroduced it’d need to be a small population and kept down to prevent encroachment on no longer forested areas.

I always thought that if you connected the bluestack mountains down to nevin beg rage with a wilderness corridor then you would have a sizeable wilderness reserve stretching from Connemara up to the Derryveagh Mountains in Donegal. Some people may think that I am out of touch with rural Ireland and probably live in a city but I myself am a small scale beef farmer so this kind of project would affect someone like me more than anyone else.I think that we would need to start reintroducing some of our other extinct animal's like the capercaillie, osprey and the lynx before even considering wolves this would get people more in the mindset of reintroducing our extinct animals and improving our biodiversity and all the benefits that come with reintroducing these animals.
@zenith7024 Жыл бұрын
Even joining the derryveagh to the bluestacks in Donegal with plenty of birch and scottspine trees would be a big enough area for some lynx, but it's never gonna happen because the Irish government couldn't care less about nature, that's why our country is covered in Sitka spruce that offers nothing for wildlife or even the people who live close to those green deserts

We have Lions, Elephants, Gorillas, Crocodiles, Chimpanzees,... Living in habitats as diverse as Savannah and Jungle. Ireland is also the very first country that experienced British Imperialism on such a large scale for so long. You say man did this, but in fact the Irish are an ancient Goddess culture that respected their land. It was not until British Imperialism and subsequent industrialization that the land became destroyed. Ireland needs to be rewilded in the same way most countries do especially those who have been used as cheap sources of beef/wool/animal flesh. Wolves belong in Ireland, imported animals used for profit do not.

Well the problem is the Irish government doesn't give a shit about nature. I understand the British did enormous damage to our country by cutting all the oak forests and shooting every wolf, but Ireland since 1921 has done nothing to repair the damage lost. Our national parks are devoid of trees apart from Killarney, and even Killarney should have more trees than what it has. Our country is covered in Sitka spruce trees that offer nothing for wildlife, they are simply planted for profit. We have fields upon fields that are spread with slurry and chemicals that kill every insect and wild flower, which is decimating butterflies, moths and bees. I really respect the African countries because even though they are poor, their governments have more respect for nature than any of the European countries.

It's tough to look at people and ask, "Do we value the natural world?" Many people may not even understand the question as many are already so removed from nature living in cities in the cars, apartments, businesses. But then Nature seems to be knocking on our collective "doors". The ability to be removed, to be unaffected by nature is irrelevant. Nature is impacting our way of life, to the point that if we are not able to adapt, nature will force some human adaptation. Whether it's reduced food production, interrupted hydrological cycles, elevated temperatures especially in urban environments, the cost of doing nothing and being removed from nature is becoming unavoidable. In older times, this had led to some smaller civilizations to even fully collapse.

Im glad and agree that they should be brought back but with humans pretty much overpopulated it would be extremely difficult to find a solution for that didn't require people moving or being attacked for food. Lynx wouldn't be AS bad because they're solitary hunters, but wolves also break off not agreeing and end up making multiple packs and are very territorial. I do hope someday nature can be restored before it's too late.

As a US hunter and outdoors man in Wisconsin, Wolves came back to our state in the 1980's. Be very careful what you wish for. Wolves multiply way faster than scientist or biologist ever foresee. This means that you MUST have a conservation control system in place before you introduce them. This is where the US has had issues. Wisconsin is only one state and it is TWICE the size of all of Ireland. Prior to 1980 wolves were nonexistent .. extinct in Wisconsin. Today there are well over 1000's.. so many we just had a wolf hunt that was supposed to last a week but in 4 days..over 200 were shot/trapped. Estimates now put the wolf population in Wisconsin way over biologist stats. Hunting and trapping are OPEN here and so are firearms.. are you prepared to open this pandora box? All year long we have Wolf issues with dog killings and domestic animals... are you prepared for this? One sheepdog going up into a hill to bring down some stranglers of sheep.. if a wolf is there, that dog won't come back. Happens all the time in Wisconsin. Just some thoughts. They are magnificent animals.. but they are APEX predators.

Well the Irish lived with wolves for centuries until the English wiped them out, even back then Ireland had the highest population of wolves in Europe! But I guess times have changed, for instance all of our native forest is wiped out, and wolves need that for cover, so without huge chunks of forest then the wolf is likely to attack some sheep in the uplands, Ireland is too intensely farmed now a days, the lynx would be a better bet if the useless Irish government would plant some damn trees for nature

I think that it would take a change in behavior from deer, sheep farmers AND nature enthusiasts alike. Bringing the wolf back and just leaving them alone is irresponsible, if only because of population dynamics. Populations of prey and predator will initially be out of whack (few wolves, lots of roe deer) and will start to fluctuate. These waves will only dampen over time. This means that there will inevitably come times that there are lots of hungry wolves but few roe deer left. That is a dangerous inbalance caused by Homo sapiens that should be MANAGED by our invasive species. Leaving them alone will not do. And culling will have to part of the management tools to guide the system to a more stationary state as quickly as possible.

Idaho Montana and Wyoming have wolf hunting, no tags needed. The wolves got out of control so fast that wolves, not man , are wolves biggest predators. Don’t be fooled with the hippie bullshit. Careful consideration and management needs to take place especially with an animal that will hunt and kill you. My favorite story is of a wolf advocate in Oregon protesting hunting in one way or another getting eaten by wolves. I’m all for wolves by the way. I’m not for the “ everything is going to be just fine “ attitude”. Remember California has a grizzly on its state’s flag but there’s no grizzlies. For a reason. Both kill for sport , wolves and grizzlies. This man states “ with No wolves the fox overpopulated and got out of control so fast other species started to suffer “. It’s in the video. Apply this to wolves and let’s talk about how you are going to manage these wolves.
