An attendance of 25,142 were present to see an important First Division encounter between Birmingham City, managed by Freddie Goodwin, and Bill McGarry's Wolves team. Wolves had lost three and drawn three of their opening six matches to the 1975-76 season before the arrival of Birmingham to Molineux on 13th September 1975. Included in the Blues side were former Wolves players Peter Withe and Bob Hatton while future England international Trevor Francis would similarly test a veteran Wolves defence.
McGarry's Wolves were largely an experienced group of players and it was a surprise to many at the club that the season was to prove one of struggle. Ultimately, the threat of relegation for both Wolves and Blues was decided on Tuesday 4th May 1976 and the final match of the 1975-76 season. In a dramatic evening, Wolves required a win at home against Liverpool (who needed a win themselves to pip Queens Park Rangers to the title) and for Sheffield United to defeat Birmingham at Bramall Lane for Wolves to avoid relegation and condemn Birmingham to relegation. In front of almost 50,000 at Molineux, Wolves were just 13 minutes away from defeating Liverpool before Bob Paisley's side mounted a thrilling comeback. However, Birmingham secured a point at Sheffield to consign Wolves to relegation.
Originally broadcast on ATV Star Soccer with Hugh Johns commentating.

I'm extremely excited about Wolves moving up to the Premiership this year. They have made some excellent signings this off-season and have an opportunity to make an impact straight away. GO WOLVES!

Finding it a bit hard to get my head around the published attendance on this clip of 25,142. Back in those days Molineux could still hold nearly 50,000 - as evidenced by the final game of the season against Liverpool which had 49,000. I know there aren't many wide angle shots of further up the terraces, but it hardly looks half full from what you can see!

Attendance records from this era were made up nonsense, basically the more clubs declared, the more VAT they paid, no other records were kept. St.Andrews would often be full, and could take 60k, but attendances were never recorded much above 40k

@@stevenmcguinness4751 It was exactly the same at Wolves. Plus there were those who were let in under the turnstiles that weren't even recorded as being there in the first place.

We got Star soccer back in those days , wonderful Hugh Johns commentary and always midlands teams featured . Football was great back then as far as I am concerned , these days all you have is Naymar rolling around like a spoilt brat - laughable.

Willie Carr, of Coventry free kick fame, but he was much more than that. The penalty should have been retaken, since there were Birmingham players in the box.

Duncan 'socks down' McKenzie - both players were mavericks. As a manager you just put them on the pitch and told them to enjoy themselves, and then wait and see what happens.
