Rather than just speculating, that biologist should do a test. Have the woman set up the camera exactly where it was, and walk across the field where it looks like the cat was. Then you can compare the images for scale.

@@bobcaygeon975 True and false. In 2011, a mountain lion that originated from South Dakota was found on a highway in Connecticutt after being hit by a vehicle. The theory is that it had walked north of the Great Lakes and ended up in CT. So, at least one mountain lion was in CT. There could be more, but only that one confirmed in recent times.

I live in Missouri. My husband and I live in a rural area by a river and conservation land. Each of us together and independently have absolutely seen mountain lion/ cougar whatever you want to call him. But officially the authorities say we don't have them here. Couple of years ago there was even a news report that someone had hit one on the highway. And they still say they aren't here. You know what you saw. And the people who have been around them know what you saw too.

With fires in Canada, floods, or whatever, and any illnesses that hooved animals have been having...wasting illnesses ect, big cats, as well as other meat-eating predators, will travel to find food. Lions are solitary and have HUGE territories but need to eat. They will travel to greener pastures. I live in Colorado, 50 yrs ago, the lions were in the mountains and upper foothills, now they are to the Nebraska and Kansas borders. Wolves from Yellowstone migrated into Colorado several years ago, formed a pack and reproduced. Then, the state released wolves late this past winter on the Western side of the Rocky Mountains. They have tracking collars, and already, some have traveled over the mountains and into the lower foothills on the North Eastern side. They were not too far from Colorado State University. I doubt they would venture into Fort Collins when there are livestock ranches to feed on, but I've seen moose, bears, and elk as well as Mt Lions in Ft Collins. Home development and lack of food from various weather conditions will drive animals out of the mountains. The predators will follow. The difference is deer, elk live in herds, Mt Lions live alone unless they are breeding or a female has cubs and need a ton of space for each territory.

It’s not that you can’t find a mountain lion outside its range. It’s that when you do it’s rare. What biologists mean is there are no breeding populations outside the known range of mountain lions.
@gsdmom1194
@gsdmom1194 Ай бұрын
Before Colorado introduced Wolves into the wild, people reporting wolf sightings. You kept hearing..it's just a dog, a dog the killed the calf. Finally, a couple of biologists started looking into it. Trail cams caught a wolf. Foot Prints were studied and DNA was checked. They found that several wolves migrated south from The Yellowstone Wolves. These wolves survived traveling through Wyoming, outside of Yellowstone land, and wolves successfully bred had pups and were then considered a pack. Wolves will travel long distances to hunt, but big cats are solitary, and as populations grow, the spread will grow too. Cats will travel to find food. With more and more groups trying to ban hunting, you will see more illnesses in game animals, deer, elk, and moose. Week herds, sick animals, and eventually death. The cats will travel to populated areas to hunt and move into areas that normally don't see them. They will eat your farm animals and kill your dogs!!!! More food for that predator. Because of human sprawl into animal habitats, they, as well as other animals, will move or adapt.
@gsdmom1194
@gsdmom1194 Ай бұрын
@wvcruffler123 that is true. With the Yellowstone wolves that migrated to Colorado several years prior to the Idaho wolves being released, they didn't spend as much time about it until they bred and successfully had pups. Once that happened, they kept a closer eye on them to study the fact that they successfully traveled a dangerous journey through Wyoming (outside of Yellowstone, a rancher can shoot wolves.) A large portion of this pack crossed back into Wyoming and were killed but it somehow has successfully survived. Since then, they have released 15-20 grey wolves from Idaho but thanks to the tracking collars, they can see how far east they have traveled. They have gotten close to the Red Feather area which is not to far from Fort Collins, the home of Colorado State University. If they were to cross I-25, there are ranch lands and Federal lands with plenty of grazing for deer and antelope. There are Mt. Lions out there now but much more food as the grazing conditions are not as harsh as the western side of the mountains where they were released. Snow doesn't get as deep, and there is grazing open land as far as the eye can see.

It's a big orange house cat, folks. Both mountain lions and bobcats have black ears with a distinct white "eye spot" on the back of each ear, and when the cat turns its face towards the sunset, you can clearly see that the backs of its ears are orange, same color as the rest of its coat, no black and no eye spots.

My lifelong buddy lives just over the border into Washington ( or as pronounced here in Montana "WaRshington" ) and their Dept of Wildlife was in complete denial of any wolves spilling over from Idaho ( yep, "I da hoe" ). Denial to the public, tho they had evidence and departmental meeting to discuss the wolves. Now, 20 yrs on, they mysteriously proclaim they've discovered wolves in WaRshington. Imagine that, all those people seeing wolves for years Weren't crazy, and all those pictures weren't dog nor fox, nor coyote nor Sasquatch, but wolves. Same here in Montana. Denied we had wolves and denied they're the ones to set'em loose on us. Said they came down from Canada, then over from Idaho ( where they Did infect them loose ). Funny how i once found a big ol' track in the snow, pacing along side of my track in the snow. I made a plaster of paris cast and took it into the Lolo Nat Forest office at Ft. Missoula. The two armed security guards downstairs wouldn't let me pass ( hell, i'm only a PFC now, but once had a Top Secret clearance by UncleSam, yet not allowed into the building i'm paying for and near those that work for Me ! ) but did call upstairs and said a biologist would be down shortly. Meanwile they looked at the paw print cast, one saying it was a wolf and the other declaring it to be a bear. Till the biologist came prancing down the stairs all atwitter at seeing a wolf print. What a disappointment i was to her, one look and she saddly declared it a Lion, male...well fed. Boy was she disappointed, but took my name/ location of track / etc but impressed upon me the importance of reporting any wolf track to her just as soon as i found one. As said, they were in complete denial of Any wolves in Montana, yet she was in charge of the Montana Wolf Project and was just itchin' for evidence of such. Now Fish Crick is devoid of every elk, deer, moose that used to bless that drainage. The wolves killed Brownie's dog when he lived there ( and indirectly him once he lost his dog to a wolf, he got one, not the one that killed his dog, this one had a GPS collar on it that proves they knew we had wolves and they were tracking them, but loosing his dog at his age done him in), so the one he got he threw off the bridge into the Clark Fork and sent it downstream back to Idaho. Passed away of a broken heart shortly thereafter. The Mt. FWP was ordered to lie about wolves for about 10 years untill the evidence was too overwhelming to deny any longer. Then they let on we "might" have wolves. Kinda like cockroaches, if you see one ya got 99 more. Our tax dollars at work. " We're from the Gov't, we're here to help you." S-S-S... ☆

They don't want to look into it and prove that it is, why? I do not think this animal is a Cougar. Saw a Cougar leap across a road on the edge of the Holly Shelter Game land in Pender cty, N.C. in 1999. That Tail and a four foot long Cat were unmistakable,two leaps and it was gone. N.C. Wildlife categorically said NO COUGARS east of the Rocky Mountains. That is going to be a surprise to the Cougars that live in Big Bend Park TX. Also the Florida Panthers might be unhappy. The Canadian Cougars might be disappointed too. It also fails to explain all the Farm Animal kills across N.C. In a line from about the Brunswick/Horry county area, all the way to the Northwest of Greensboro, in1999.

I took a series of screen grabs of the video, then lightened the images. The clearest image was at time 0.05, playback speed 0.25, Quality 720p. Check it out. The best pic of the cat shows a tan color coat, a dark muzzle, small dark ears and a lean body type. The tan color suggests mountain lion. The dark muzzle, small dark ears and a lean body are also consistent with a lion. Housecats and bobcats have large ears. A bobcat has relatively long legs. The overall smallish size suggests a juvenile. Adult mountain lions stand 2-3 feet tall. My best guess is a juvenile mountain lion.

They need to go put a person in the same spot where the animal was, and with the camera where it was positioned so as to get a size reference. That would solve many of the arguments between Cougar, Bobcat, or a large House Cat.

I know it's a debated subject, but I definitely, without a doubt, saw a black panther in the early 2000s. I was very young, but hear me out. I've never seen anything like it since. From the size and the way it walked, it was not a normal house cat that I simply mistook it for; this thing was full-grown panther size, easily bigger than a German Shepherd. Everything in the woodline got quiet when it entered, even the birds. I had been playing outside for a while at that point and was actually heading inside when I heard it. As soon as I saw it, I completely froze until it walked a good way into the woods. Growing up where I did, I would hear stories of people keeping them as pets. If it wasn't wild, it was definitely a pet; either way, it was loose.

There's nothing in the video that gives any good perspective to determine the size of the cat, though it appears to be about 1/2 as tall as the grass, but when the cat is facing the camera at 0:37 that's not the large and widespread eyes of a mountain lion, it's the face of a tabby cat.

Folks, let's call it what it is... a mountain lion. ...uh let's see, Appalachian Mountains near us, it's name is "mountain" lion? Florida has black panthers? Isn't that their state cat? Why does it surprise anyone, well okay, not a common sighting in Inman as yesterday's posting of an online photo of blackbear lounging in the yard of an Inman resident. I'm a little surprised. I saw something in field near French Broad River at Biltmore Estates yesterday that tan color but standing taller and too far away to know for sure what it was, I thought a deer, wife said no but hey, maybe... In all seriousness, great photo and story young lady, keep shooting (photos) and posting!!

One distinguishing characteristic of mountain lions is their incredibly long, thick tale that's as nearly as long as their body with an upturned end and black tale-tip. That's absent here. Plus, a ML head always appears too small for it's beefy body and thick limbs. Amusingly, its parts always seem oddly out of proportion. Again, not seeing that with this animal.

Not saying this is one, but cougars are repopulating their native range in the East, there are confirmed sightings as far East as Connecticut. To give you an example of how mistaken scientists can be about things like this, here in the Northwest we were told for decades wolverines do not exist outside the mountainous far NE corner of the state near Idaho and only at high elevations, despite regular reports of sightings in the Western part of the state by people hundreds of miles away from where they only supposedly existed, but now with everyone having quality cell phone cameras there have been more than a half dozen sightings in Western Oregon and all at lower elevations just in the last year alone, again many hundreds of miles away from where they only supposedly exist.
