Usually, mules are paid. And mules aren’t experts in money laundering, so finding payment isn’t that hard. Sometimes it’s bank transfer, sometimes it’s cash, sometimes it’s the trip itself that is paid by « the friend ». If there was a reasonable doubt she wasn’t paid, ie she paid the trip herself and none transfered cash or waited outside, and she has no criminal record, it can become possible to indeed claim she did someone a service and unknowingly carried drugs. We don’t know the full story.

If a jury agrees that you had no reasonable way of knowing you were transporting drugs, you will not be convicted. Remember, it has to be "beyond reasonable doubt".
