I at times had to leave my 13 yr old babysitting my younger 3 children to go to work, it was 8 hours of panic every time. Only three states have a minimum age where you can leave a child home alone. In Illinois the age is 14 yo, In Maryland it's 8 yo and in Oregon, it's 10yo. In all other states, you can get up to a year in jail per child left home alone.

The parent is responsible for deciding whether or not the child is mature and responsible enough to understand the circumstances and take care of her or himself.

Now if you pretend and prey on people to be someone that’s obviously wrong but if this girl truly was kidnapped by someone all these years she could just think hey that could be who I am. Not that she’s saying it to lie or hurt someone plus she took the dna test and had a similar scar so idk only the test will tell. Thats just how the 1970s-early 2000s were unfortunately. I was left alone with my siblings all of the time who were only a few years younger and older than me, while quick store run was made. Nothing ever happened to us or the neighborhood kids. Someone must have been watching this poor family and waited until they left the kids.

I walked home from school since the age of 5 as well. But I'm glad you never experienced that and do not know any one who had to. @@Mulan2x girl, nobody 5-10 years old was walking in the street and damn near getting hit by cars. We weren't stupid and we had no issues processing our environments and dangers. Not sure what issues you had as a child, but that wasn't like that in my city growing up. For the students who did have troubles, they were all on the bus or picked up by their parents from school. Our elementary schools were always 5 mins from our home, so a lot of us walked home in those days and no one batted an eye, so long as we were all together in a group with our siblings. And as we walked home, we saw other little kids walking in all directions to their homes that were all by the school. No adults just little groups of kids. When our parents weren't going to be home, somehow we knew to walk to our after school program from the school. The only time a teacher wouldn't let me walk home was when my siblings left without me when I was 5, and then they had me sit there for an hour. They couldn't reach my parents, and eventually told me to walk home. I was afraid because I never walked home alone, but stayed alert and made it home safe. This was 1994. My point in my previous comments, were that it wasn't unheard of or strange at all in the 90s and early 2000s for kids to be left alone at home for a short time with their siblings. I'm not talking for more than an hour. Of course, someone older would have to be home if the parents were going to be gone for hours. Derp.

I've never understood why people lie about being someone that's been missing, like they can't easily do a DNA test to verify. As a mother, I can't even begin to fathom what it feels like not knowing where your child is, not knowing if they're okay or a live still and to have people lie and get your hopes up. I'm sure re opens the wound over and over again. It's so cruel and evil to do to someone.
