Woman commands nuclear-powered aircraft carrier for first time

Captain Amy Bauernschmidt took control of the USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, becoming the first woman to do so. It's a breakthrough for women in the military as she heads to China where tensions have been rising. David Martin reports.

That put me in the Island sitting 3 chairs away from the CAG of night flight Ops. One of the best seats on the Ship to observe NIGHTTIME COMBAT FLIGHT OPERATIONS. All of my introduction is about showing YOU, CAPTAIN, I have witnessed, however superficially, NAVY LEADERSHIP at THE HIGHEST LEVEL. THANK YOU CAPTAIN, FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP, AMAZING SKILL SETS, FOR LIGHTING THE PATH FOR FUTURE LEADERS, MALE & FEMALE, & EPITOMIZING THE CORRECT WAY TO DO THIS JOB.

Don't care about her gender. Only thing that matters to me is can she do the job or not. One thing I didn't realize is how young the average age of the crew is. What an incredible amount of money, resources, and above all responsibilities all being run by very young men and women. Is this common in the Navy?

Not that men don't also do this, but in my experience, it's more likely to happen with women. And - I have been a Captain.

What if she's caught in warfare? The battlefield is not for our sisters in humanity. Pushing buttons is not real warfare. As doctors and nurses taking care of the wounded is the limit and they get a share of the spoils, but not a fixed share like the cavalry and foot soldiers. The cavalry get two shares and the foot soldier one share. Her Jihad is Hajj or 'Umrah. In hollywood she can fight an entire squadron, but in real life, the u.s couldn't win over the Taliban.

Was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan '98 through '04 and saw it happen, not on the carrier, but on a smaller ship. 3/4 of the crew were female and most came back pregnant.
