I worked at a Six Flags, and one of my friends worked what was a new stand up roller coaster, She was working the day a lady decided the safety harness was too tight and loosened it during the ride, the lady flew off and passed away. It was horrible, the operator never recovered from the guilt she felt, Even though it was proven she had correctly harnessed the lady in. The ride was never reopened and was removed from the park. I know that the operators had gone through almost a month of training, before the park opened for the season (They started training Mid March for end of April opening) Overall it was horrible for all the employees, but the operators of that roller coaster, never returned to work, although they were paid for the whole summer, and therapy was offered to all employees to deal with the aftermath.

Carowinds is a park I grew up going to. The Fury is a lot of fun. I’ll go on it again once it’s fixed. From what I understand, the reason the crack got so bad was because the inspection cameras made the crack look like a shadow. I also believe they stated they are improving the camera system.

I remember hearing of one case of a honeymoon couple at a ride at Paramount's Great America. She lost her hat on the ride, and he scaled two fences in order to get it. As he stood up with it, he was hit in the head by the feet of the people on the ride (it was one of those hanging rides) and was killed. The impact broke the leg of the woman on the ride.

Here’s my second comment, as a ride operator you are trained on every ride you operate by someone who knows the ins and outs of the ride. Each ride is inspected by 3 people every single day 1. Maintenance 2. A supervisor 3. The operator of the ride These rides are safe and statistically speaking you will not get seriously injured on rides at a trusted amusement park. I can’t go into detail on things that go wrong with rides but be assured if something goes wrong then the operator is trained to shut down the ride, call a supervisor and the situation will be fixed. Generally it’s the operator’s responsibility to make sure everyone on the ride is safe with how they operate it and follow procedure, but if guests do things that are not smart and go against the policies of the ride/park it is generally the guests fault since generally it is out of the control of the employees (not to say you don’t prevent these things from happening in the first place)

When I was a kid, I was on a ride that was basically a four person carriage that swung around. I got motion sick from running around to every fast ride I could, and being a dumb kid, I leaned outside the carriage instead of inside. I just remember kids running and screaming from the flying vomit (which is pretty funny in hindsight). My mom tried to get them to stop the ride, but there was no way to stop it in the middle. She talked to the owner (it was at a small local amusement park), and made the point that sure I was just motion sick, but what if someone was on it with a real injury, like a heart attack. That ride was gone by the next time we were there.

Aquaduck rider here! I'm guessing there might have been a momentum issue as that ride does have a height requirement. Never saw that happen on my cruise but definitely seems like a thing that could happen. Have also seen others record the ride with a GoPro. You do need to have it secure to your body (think wrist strap) but filming is allowed. Edit to add: The ride operator at the top also has 4 different cameras to watch so they can keep tabs on riders and space them out accordingly.

I worked at Canada's Wonderland in Ontario Canada back in the 90s. Emergency stop buttons, DO emergency stop. Like, immediately. Like, people may get whiplash cause it stops so fast, but it's preferrable to death. And yes, we did daily inspections of the rides. Multiple times. And the ride operators, they are watching for two things, bad behaviour, but more importantly, something going wrong. I find it so weird that there have been so many incidents this year at amusement parks. Cause they did not mess with safety checks back when I was working there.

TWO FUN STORIES! The first one! When I was around 10 years old, I went to a carnival with my aunt's neighbor's because their kids were around my age. I went onto the chair swing ride for the first time with them and liked it, so I went on again alone. The ride operator was allowing kids to kick the empty chairs. One of which hit me just above my eye and knocked me out. Yes, my mom sued. I'm pretty sure they kept the carnival going after it. Story two! I used to be a ride operator for a small theme park in my area. We have that dragon ride for kids. there is literally almost no training that goes into it. You get like 1 day of training on the rides to show like how to turn them on and off, where the emergency stop is, and in the roller coaster's case, how to use the brakes because the brakes are manually done by the operator.

The fact that you made this video right now is so weird. This last month a theme park here in Sweden named ”Gröna Lund” have had 4 accidents!! The first was a roller coaster that derailed and got stuck, three people fell out of it and a woman died and nine more people got injured. The second was an employee that got hit in the head by an attraction when she was picking up a phone a visitor had dropped, she got a concussion but was otherwise fine. The thing with that accident was that the employee operating the attraction, had given her green light to go and get the phone. The third and fourth accidents was within 24 hours of eachother and at the same attraction! Two different women got hurt in the parks funhouse. One fell in the stairs and one got hurt on a flying carpet. FOUR ACCIDENTS IN ONE MONTH! And one death! It’s so scary and the fact that you made this video now is a coincidence. Stay safe!

@@antonytsai6611 Probably because most people have experienced a safe car ride a SUBSTANTIAL amount more then a safe roller coaster ride. Like think about how often you are in a car vs on a roller coaster ofc statistically you are more likely to get into a car crash cus they are used more often and there's less control. Plus as YOU said it's something we are frequently used and you know the risks of whereas some of these instances are things you'd never even consider could happen to you (like the cracked beam or Sam's story of the wire). I have a carnival ride story and I am fortunate that it was not too bad. I was on one of those claw rides that a lot of boardwalks and carnivals have. Mid-ride, I realize every time I am facing the ground, the harness would loosen slightly. I tried to tell myself I was ok and the ride was made to hold people bigger than me, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it was going to give and I would be dangling from the seat or fall from it. I was pulling the harness down/closer to me the entire time, pulling harder when I was facing the sky. When the ride was ending, I was about to convince myself it was all in my head. Then, I noticed my harness was the only one to not lift up when all the others did and I couldn't get it up myself. The operator had to really pull it off of me. That confirmed that there was actually something wrong with my seat and something could have happened. I didn't hear of any incidents happening with that ride, but I don't think it was brought back the following year. I only stick to the fast, grounded rides at carnivals now

Remember in 2008 when the teenager was killed by the Batman roller coaster when he went underneath it to retrieve an item he dropped? I was at the same Six Flags two months later. I decided not to ride the Superman coaster (because you hang parallel to the ground and I got paranoid.) So I waited for my friends at the exit walkway next to the gift shop. Part of the fence surrounding the ride was next to the walkway. A couple was walking toward me and they stopped next to the fence gate near me. I heard them talking; the guy said he was going to go in and look for the keys he dropped on the ride. Me, thinking of the teen who was just killed doing the same thing, started to panic and tried talking him out of it. He didn’t listen and opened the gate and walked in (Why was the gate unlocked??). As I started to look around for a staff member, one of them showed up and told him to get out. The relief I felt…I thought that dude was going to die like the one 2 months earlier. Although the Superman coaster doesn’t dip down as low as the Batman coaster, it was still so scary to think of this guy looking for his keys underneath a freaking roller coaster. And yes, I did ride the Batman coaster that day. It was very somber thinking of the young man who died.

As someone who works at an amusement park, people do dumb things like this all day everyday. If something falls off we do recover it for the most part. Our park isnt the largest, and the rides (besides the coasters) are fairly easy to recover items, but it can take some time since we have a procedure for it.

Before we left the resort to go home, we did go to the main lost and found for Disney to check if it might have been found or retrieved from the ride somehow. No luck. We left our information (name, address and phone number) just in case it turned up. Acouple months later we received a package from Disney World with my husband's hat. I couldn't believe they found it, let alone were able to match it up to us. I'm sure they get thousands upon thousands of reports of lost things. My husband was so happy and to this day remembers to take his Donald hat off befor getting on a ride 😊

I’m 12 and recently I went to a theme park called kings dominion and I went to soaks city the water park in it and I was there with my friend and I went on the water rides and when I was on one I randomly got stock door a few seconds I didn’t freak out and acted fast to push myself from my position and thankfully started moving again I’ve only told my friend who I was with and haven’t told anyone else yet but I’m just happy that I acted fast since it was a water ride I just needed to push and I would go The sand serpent ruined or whatever it’s called we have a ride called as Apple zapple it’s similar to that basically the same thing

8:06 Heyyy, that's the one from Hyde Park Winter Wonderland 2022 - 2023 in London. It's a temporary seasonal thing built in Hyde Park, which is usually just a normal grass-and-trees type park (in case anyone didn't know). I was there a few weeks later (crappy rides in a crappy overcrowded lot with metal plates as flooring, not worth it). I walked past the ride sitting there with a lovely 'ride closed' sign on it. I was already planning on riding nothing, but after seeing that? Yeah, no chance. I adore theme parks, but I absolutely do not trust temporary rides. They're built with intentional impermanence in mind; no way they're safe. These were HUGE rides too, gigantic drop towers and behemoth devices that flung people all over the place. I even saw another ride, a high-up rollercoaster with shoulder restraints, and I swear there was a big gap between people's bodies and the restraints, which I'm pretty sure is not supposed to happen. They're meant to be snug. Mind you, I'm not an expert or anything, I don't want to fearmonger here, but my favourite place in the whole world is quite literally a theme park (in the Netherlands); they're a bit of an obsession

For the Carowinds ride, those rides are generally pretty overbuilt so in terms of safety with one of the supports broken like that, it is extremely unlikely that the track would break under the short amount of time it was operating like that. The main reason for having supports as frequently as they do, is because it reduces strain on the track improving the longevity and reducing maintenance costs for the ride. Theory I've heard is that the foundation for the pillar settled and put extra strain on the part which caused the crack to form. That particular manufacturer has built hundreds of rides and this is the first time something like this has happened on any of their rides as far as I am aware. My understanding as well is cracks like that start pretty small and will progress pretty slowly, but as they open up they progress faster and faster. Seeing as that was later in the day, its pretty likely that that morning, the crack was still pretty small.

I worked at a six flags one summer (not operating rides, I was one of the poor schleps at all the booths/kiosks everyone ignores as the walk through the park). Honestly, it was a rare day one of the coasters didn’t break down, though more often than not they’d break down in the gate, not in the middle of a run, so it wasn’t like they were pulling people off every day. They did have ambulances parked underneath the wooden coaster all the time though because those wooden coasters are garbage and are the most likely to have someone come off with a neck or back injury.

wooden coasters aren't garbage they are either historic or jsut fun rides they wont get injured everyday what park was this? if it was an older ride and witht eh fact that six flags doesn't put as much effort in upkeep and maintenence it would make sense

I went to a fair with my siblings and cousins (and my aunt and uncle, as we were all minors) once, and we all split up in pairs to do different rides and such. Well I was with my cousin and she wanted to do this one ride where it was a boat that rocked back and forth really far (so the seats on either end would be turned 90+ degrees, basically). I really didn’t want to do it because I’m afraid of heights, but I had to stay with her because I was the older and more responsible one of our pair. So we went on the ride and my cousin of course picked one of the seats nearest to the end of the boat. THERE WERE NO SEAT BELTS. There was literally just a bar across your lap that you held onto. Now, I’m a small person, so there were several inches between the bar and my thighs, and I had to hold onto that bar for dear life at the peak of the ride because I could have actually fallen out. I felt myself rise up off the bench a few times. And we were at LEAST 20 feet in the air, probably more (my depth perception isn’t great). I had a panic attack and told my cousin that I would never ride it again. The rest of the fair was decent, but that one ride has slightly scarred me. We did go on some other (more calm) high rides, but yes, I am still afraid of heights.

That ride has been at every theme park I've been to and I always go on with my siblings and we sit at the top and hold our hands up in the air and so everyone else seems to instinctively do it too and then it's like a competition of who can hold their hand up the longest. I've been doing this since I was like 5 and never fallen out I think it's constructed in a way where it's safe. I'm 18 and still get lifted up the seat as do both my parents when they've been on it so I again think it's just with the momentum of the ride it can happen but I'm pretty sure it's safe. Tbh it did sorta shock me when I was older that it didn't have seat belts and I realized it seemed dangerous but I'm sure they would've put them in if there was real danger and I've personally never heard of a story of someone falling out (although I agree sometimes it really does feel like you will).
