The best advice I ever received as a teenager during my third trip abroad was from a 60-something year old world traveler. This was pre-social media, and I would carry a polaroid or film camera every where I went. He said "Relax. Put the camera down, You need to learn to live in the moment" and I said "But what if I don't remember later?" and he chuckled and said "If you can't remember then it clearly wasn't that great...trust me, you'll remember." I was 16 when I met him and I'm now 35. I've realized that even when the images in our minds get a bit blurry, one never forgets the feelings. And every memory can become vividly clear when a certain scent triggers a locked away memory, in a way that a picture can't quite make things come to life. Even now, at 35, I can still remember the scent of the flowers outside that gentleman's house. It was one of the most joyous summers of my life. These days I have pictures shown to me and even with the picture in front of me sometimes, I can't remember much about the images. The brain remembers what it wants to remember. Not all memories are created equal. And the only way to have lasting images in the mind is to be fully present in our own lives. Pictures aren't always enough, nor are they worth taking in the midst of new experiences. Pictures are for when an experience has become stale enough to ignore. 🤷🏾♀️

Some people momentarily lose awareness of where they are, and some people just don't watch where they're going.

The Grand Canyon scares the crap out of me. I was there in ‘98 with a fellow student. He was taking pictures and wanted me to get closer to the edge. Nothing happened, but that night I had a nightmare about falling to my death. I can’t even look at calendars of the Grand Canyon now.

After working in construction for many years, one habit I’ve picked up is to never step backward. Always turn and look every time.

Coach driver took a coach full of idiots to the Grand Canyon, let them all off then started to drive off home. When asked why was he leaving, he said, "They're all idiots. This is the Grand Canyon. You go figure!" :-))...

Not to be insensitive, but uh, several things come to mind; 1. Lemming family: "I wanna go", 2. She didn't look Oriental, 3. Darwin was right, 3. Prairie dog screams, INCOMING, 4. Coyote family, "are you gonna eat that?", 5. Saint Peter, facepalm. Yeah yeah yeah, I'm horrible, and everyone that laughed is going to hell with me(even if you just smiled a little).

I'm sorry for this lady's family. Cell phones have made a lot of people kinda dumb. They are on their phones and not paying attention to their surroundings. Pay attention if you are going off trail in a potentially hazardous area. I understand that people make mistakes but this is becoming way too common. Getting too close to the edge and falling. Getting too close to a wild animal and mauled to death. Getting the perfect selfie or photo shot is not worth losing your life over.

People just can't resist the "look at me" opportunity. Another one is the 'point' extending off the edge of Half Dome like a diving board. Thats more than a 1000 ft drop.
