we have a groundhog family that has chosen our area for their homes and baby raising for at least a decade. they have salad days (i call them) where they wont eat anything besides the native plants (and some garden plants. oh well lol) and then peanut days where they steal the crow's peanuts. they are the cutest when they eat, run and attempt (sometimes successfully) to jump onto the sunbed that the birds use to hang out on

😅😂🤣 Not messy. Apparently you haven't seen Chunk. A man had something eating his garden. He tried fencing, humane traps... everything. He finally set up a trail cam. It was a ground hog. He watched him for a few days while he tried to figure out how to get rid of him. The groundhog seemed to be attracted to the camera and sit there and eat his stolen vegetables. The guy finly decided to just leave a pile if vegetables for the groundhog and keep the camera up. The groundhog was named Chunk. The next season the man planted a second garden just for Chunk and put up more trail cams. I think we're into year 4 now. There are lots of cameras. There is a dining arwa with a picnic table, a Mrs. Chunk, baby Chunks... If you're ever having a bad day visit Chunk's channel. But do yourself a favor and go back and watch the first few videos first. The beginning of getting rid of the intruder who is now family is delightful. Oh... and watch Chunk eat tomatoes. He's not neat. 😉 But he is cool.

We have a big groundhog who’s lived under our shed for years. It’s perfect because he has shelter, yet can’t really damage anything of value there. It’s so cute to see him waddling across the yard, munching this and that. I’ll say to my husband “Fatty’s out!” Fatty is not offended by his nickname because he doesn’t yet understand English.

@@vcarriere In this case, it was take them in or let them die. She absolutely did the right thing when no rescue anywhere near her would accept them. These animals are large, healthy, strong, and entirely stress-free. Besides that they are animals that are both adapted to domesticated and wild living- if she had left them alone they would have been killed or started to death, either way a painful death. Get off your pedestal and stop acting like anytime someone takes care of an animal in a way you don't approve of they're "dooming it" or otherwise harming it.
@vcarriere

@@ThisCatIsBored I wasn't saying that she should have left them to die but if she really wanted to rehabilitate them and release them she could have googled how to do it. I mean it certainly isn't from a bad place that she did what she did but she could have saved them, fed them appropriately and released them. But you can't release them after hand feeding them and cudling them and making them rely on human feeding them. I feel good where I am and I don't feel like i'm on a pedestal. Just saying that if I found a baby hawk that nodoby wanted to take care of i'd certainly read up on them because I wouldn't want to have to keep it in captivity.

@@Teraperf If they weren't releasable, then she's giving them the best life they could have taking that into consideration. I knew a wonderful, kind wildlife rehabber that took in a blind opossum. It could never have survived in the wild, but she has been giving it a very good life and taking very good care of it. It has a better life than some humans. It is a happy, content and lovable animal and has lived longer than its life expectation in the wild If it had not lost its vision. I could never complain about or criticize someone who is kind and caring to animals because there are far too many evil humans in this world that are cruel to them.

@@Teraperf In an ideal world they'd be released into the wild, but this woman clearly did everything in her power to make sure they would have the best life. She obviously tried her best, and to vilify her instead of offering actionable advice to anyone who is in a similar situation is just unhelpful.

These Groundhogs are NOT even a little bit domesticated let alone "too domesticated". They are "too tame" to be released. Domesticated and tame are not the same thing. Domestication involves some sort of long term manipulation in their reproductive cycle. Dogs, Pet Rats, Cattle, Honey Bees, Silkworms, Broccoli, Bananas, Apple Trees are all domesticated. Wild animals that have been rescued are not.
@dbdgirl-o3i
@dbdgirl-o3i 3 жыл бұрын
@@glenbe4026 Yup domestication has 6/7steps involved that are long term. Tame= tolerate human interaction but more food driven not emotional support drive. Same controversial argument with exotic pets breed as pets (under reputable, USDA licensed facilities). Cool thing about groundhogs: their digging patterns are absolutely unique from other burrowers; compared to rabbits, hares, moles, gophers, voles and snakes, groundhogs make long deep straightaways angling downward into the hardest soil. When a levee or dam breaches and fails its because groundhogs are prone to penetrating the hardest machine-packed deep-strata which was intended to hold back a flood.

I see a few groundhogs around our area. Mostly sitting near the road. Upsets me because I know some people will intentionally swerve over to hit them. I like groundhogs and they are a necessary animal for our ecosystem. 💗💗

What kind of fabricated perspective is that? Why would you paint such a dark picture? Animals getting hit crossing the road, albeit sad, are 99.99% by accident. Hell, you're more likely to hit one by accident then someone swerving to hit one.

@@txryder79 Look up "Intentional Vehicle-Wildlife Collisions" by faunalytics, admittedly I skimmed through it but it seems that on average, in multiple studies with differing numbers of drivers in each one (1,000 for one and 267 on another), 3% of drivers would swerve intentionally to hit rubber animals, on the other hand, people were just as or more likely to stop and rescue the animals.

People often misunderstand that thr Wild is the utter most best choise of life for and animal and that is not the case allways All most Any animal that has got used to human comfort and food Will have a very hard time adapting to the Wild life if they survive the the first period on Them one at All. Also the love and affection if they have gotten use to this. it Will be a chaos for Them for a long time surviving. The way og the wild life you have to be introduced to it from birth and Even there there is a high chance of early death do to starvation being pray or sickness. Dont allways assume the animal Will be a lot happier on its on in the wild its a few opsites compared to benafits

This person is just amazing. Thank you for taking care of these beautiful babies. For anyone else that finds themselves in a situation of having to bottle feed a baby animal. One of the MOST important things is that you absolutely MUST sterilise the feeding bottles and teats and keep absolutely Everything clean including them. A baby animal can die in a matter of hours if it gets a gastro infection. Was your hands or wear single use gloves and Sterilise all the feeding equipment, and bottles etc. Even more than you might for a human infant. Clean, clean, clean 🧼 🙌 🍼

This is amazing. Bless this woman. I’m glad to see there are still good people in the world . Groundhogs are so sweet and are so misunderstood. We have two wild groundhogs that come on our porch to visit everyday for their plate of food. Groundhogs are amazing creatures and also give so many other animals shelter. Wish so many people didn’t murder them in ignorance and for insignificant reasons
