Woman sentenced to 23 years in prison after double deadly DUI crash in Orlando

Leslie Gehret was sentenced to over 23 years in prison on Monday after she drunkenly killed an incoming UCF freshman and his father on their way to orientation last year.

I agree. 3 prior DUIs and a 4th conviction screams habitual offender! However, I do not agree with life. I do agree that more should be required of prisoners. Such as institutional requirements for mandatory education, counseling, work, etc., a significant amount of post community service, a post release probation like supervision, AA/NA, etc... Basically, overhauling the penal system, such that recidivism is not likely to occur. Perhaps, DUI/DWI with injury and death should have it's own tracking system, such as sex offenders, since there is so much of it? JUST SAYING...

How? Studies show that lengthy prison terms do not deter DUI, since intoxication inhibits rational thought. Even death sentences wouldn't work. At least self-driving vehicles are coming.

Street racing is much more dangerous than drunk driving. A drunk is not typically coming at you at 100+ mph while doing whatever necessary to win. When young, I never had enough $$$ for a high-performance car. Otherwise, I might've gotten 30yrs. 😂 Drunk driving is not something I was ever into. So jail time for drunks, probation for street racers.

So sorry for your loss... Yrs and yrs ago my uncle pulled over to change a tire early in the morning. A drunk rammed right into the back of my uncle's car and it flipped on top of him. The drunk high tailed it out of there but was later caught because the damage to his car was severe. Well left behind was my Aunt, my 4 yr old cousin who had leukemia and 7 yr old brother... My aunt never recovered from her loss.

She should have been sentenced to more. I remember arresting a woman on her 7th DUI. She hadn't even gone to court on her 6th dui charge. She rear ended a family. I witnessed the accident while on patrol. She attempted to fight as well. She was also a HTO ( felony) and was charged with resisting with violence along with battery on a LEO. Had to get multiple EMS and fire department to respond. Victims had injuries. She was finally sentenced to 20 years in prison. I can understand this wife and mothers frustration for this drunk only getting 23 yrs.

I got a DUI around 24 years ago and that was enough to set me straight to the point I've never even had even had a parking ticket since. Edit I've lived in the UCF area for the last 20 years and it's a nightmare to drive around because that college is one of the biggest in the country.

@@ChristopherWaden Not necessarily. They didn't have any problems convicting Darrell Brooks with murder using his vehicle. People also get convicted quite often of negligence using a firearm but not with a car. Most car crashes are caused by the negligence of the driver.

I have to admit.. I got a DUI in 1999. Woke me up 100! Thankfully I didnt hurt anyone! I still enjoy a few beers but ONLY at home! I don't even go to bars anymore! Haven't for years now. I've worked at and went to be social but after 1999, I always had a driver! A trusted driver in 2013 turned out to not be sober as promised. He got stopped, I got arrested for public intox because the driver had a drink. That was it for me! Since 2013... No bars.... no worries.. I stay home!

I'm so so so sorry to this poor woman and her entire family. My heart is broken for her profound loss. I've unfortunately been through the same loss because of a drunk driver and that pain will never go away. And in my opinion it should be no different than a murder charge in terms of the sentence because people willingly make the choice to get behind the wheel intoxicated knowing the consequences. It's honestly a miracle that she hasn't killed more people given the fact this is her 4th charge. Why on earth are you giving these monsters their licenses back over and over again knowing they keep getting behind the wheel trashed? First & foremost, I am extremely sorry for your loss. There is nothing that will take that away from you. My son was almost killed by a drunk driver. He didn't wake up until a month later & spent 4 more in the hospital not counting rehab. We had to wait 3yrs for the sentencing. All the other driver got was 3 months & 10yrs deferred on the felony. I wish we got 23 yrs! The laws need changing! Good luck & again, so sorry for your loss.

I was a prosecutor in both Orlando and Miami FL. There is no such thing as a life sentence for DUI manslaughter in FL. Max for each death is 15 years.
