A husband and wife with their travel trailer were at their sons college graduation and were parking at his hotel. The woman was standing behind the travel trailer directing him back while against a retaining wall and he backed right up into her. My brother-in-law had to go to that call. It was devastating. Always stand to the side and make sure you’re seen.

I used to work in a couple hospitals. I’ve had 2 patients who were injured when their trucks started rolling without any one in them. And, for some reason they thought they could step in front of the trucks, and Superman them to stop. Advice: 150 pound person is not going to stop a 5-6 thousand pound truck rolling down hill.

The wife and I have been RVing for 45 years. We started in a tent trailer and are now in a 45' coach with a stacker trailer. We have made check lists for each and every one of them. I am a pilot, and A&P Mech. (And a Combat Vet.) Check lists can save your life, as well as saving you a lot of downtime and money!! You two are GREAT. Thank you for what you do!

As a pilot we use checklist for about everything but we also use a term “ sterile cockpit “ for critical phases of flight I.e. takeoff and landing busy airspace etc. during this time there is no unnecessary talking or other distractions. I think this process would help RVers. as well.

When putting the hitch on and off the ball, put your chains on first, and leave them on, until the tow vehicle is clear. With a towed RV, you should pull in, check left right level, pull up onto leveling blocks if needed, chock tires, raise hitch off ball, then unhook chains. If you forget to chock, and you raise the hitch, if it rolls the chains will catch it! A very easy safety step to do on a towed RV. Then you can unhook, pull tow vehicle up, and finish leveling front to back.

agree. Chains first on and last off. We leave the chains completely hooked until the ball is fully disconnected. Then we still go back and check the chocks to make sure they are still fully secure after the ball lift. Then we unhook chained and move truck forward.

I’m in my 60s and I’ve been camping since I was a child. And I always remember the first thing my daddy taught me was chock your wheels on your trailer. It’s still the first thing I do after I get my trailer in a spot, and definitely before unhooking it! There are some times when I’m on the road when I will stop overnight and not unhook my trailer. I still chock my wheels!! And make a checklist! I actually use three… One for pre-hook up (and hookup), one for unhook and setup, and one for camp breakdown and leave. The pre-hook up includes all the things I want to take, plus all the steps to hook up and safety check. The camp break down and leave is just the opposite of set up but I use a checklist every time just to make sure I don’t skip any steps. The one time I didn’t use the checklist, I left my TV antenna up. Luckily the campground owner saw me on the way out and stopped me. Now I use a checklist religiously!

Very sad news. I have a truck camper, now. I have had class C motorhomes and towed boats. I have had a lot of people ask me why I always use the "E" brake. I'm old. They were originally called "Park brakes." You put them on when you park. Simple. Now, for safety, my son bought me these steering wheel slap bands to remind me to check for things. Both when parking and leaving. Because if someone talks to me I will forget something.

Our cat started the onboard generator twice while we were sleeping. Not serious, but had we been away we could have come home to only a 1/4 tank of fuel. If you’re in the middle of nowhere that could become a more serious issue. So now we have come up with a plastic cover over the generator start button I know not as serious as this video but just another piece of advice.

So very sad. I'll say a prayer for her family. I am a private pilot and have a checklist for my plane. When I bought my Class A 44-foot rig, I thought...this thing is as dangerous as my plane. So I created a checklist that my wife and I use everytime we go anywhere. A few friends think it's overkill, but pilot training teaches you how critical it is to follow the protocols. Thanks for letting us know about this story.

Last year we were at Gooseneck State Park …a lady in her pickup drove up to the edge to get a photo and left the truck running with her dog inside for the AC …well the dog got antsy and somehow the dog put the truck into drive and the truck rolled right toward the edge …luckily there was a massive rock 2ft from the edge which the truck rolled over and got stuck on-top which prevented the dog & truck from rolling over the edge. Video is good reminder. Make safety a habit. EG: When ever starting out with my toad, first I always have my co-pilot or myself move the toad a few feet to make sure all wheels are freely turning. Then I ALWAYS stop at the first the first highway rest area within the first 100 miles or less. Check all toad connections, toad tire wear etc for any abnormalities. Plus I do a walk around of coach and toad at every potty break or fuel stop. Safety, Safety, Hoping to learn for other's mistakes.......safe travels

I purchased a beautiful teardrop trailer from a small company in Wisconsin (Camp-Inn). On the back of the owners manual they have a "Ready To Roll Checklist". It is such a simple but VERY useful checklist. So important because we are all either tired when we arrive or anxious when we leave that we forget to do things. A simple checklist might be a life saver.

I always use the parking brake. I've watched people trying to get their vehicles out of park and they can't because they parked on a slope and didn't set the brake. I am yet to see or hear of anybody breaking the gear selector because it is jammed from parking on a slope but I am sure it has happened.

Horrible story. Just so viewers don't get confused, because most don't know any better, but with air brakes it's the compressed air that takes the brakes off, not the other way around. When the brakes have been dumped (put on) you've actually released the air and the springs overcame the brakes and engaged them. That's why an air brake equipped RV or truck can't be moved or towed until it is started up to build air pressure to release the brakes, or an external air source is used. Much safer that way. Any breakdown means the brakes are on. In other words if you're shut down and a dog or something hits the brakes nothing will happen until its started up to build air pressure. Thanks for another good one!

Don’t tow anything but wanted to add a note about emergency brakes and standard transmissions. I have had two, yes two, vehicles roll backwards when the cars were in gear and the emergency brake was on. Both were parked on a fairly level spot but were at the top of steepish driveways. One rolled down the driveway, across the street and into our neighbor’s basement window. It was a big window on a split-level home. The other car rolled down my driveway and got stuck in a small ditch on the edge of the driveway. No one was hurt either time. One (the one in the ditch) wound up needing the emergency brake adjusted. The other, we have no idea why it apparently popped out of gear then rolled into the neighbor’s house. It was very hot that day so perhaps that caused something to go wrong. So my point in this long winded story is even emergency brakes are not foolproof. I’m not sure what normal thing I could have done to prevent these but I never assume a vehicle won’t roll and always look for the most level place I can to park. I drive automatics these days and still use the emergency brake because I don’t want a third vehicle rolling away on me!

My truck with camper on it ran over my foot a couple years ago and I took my first trip to ER. I had put it into park and stepped out with the motor running. never again! It had developed a loose shift cable and it jumped into gear and started moving. I didn’t know what was going on and barely got out of the way or I’d be dead now. I just know my angels were working overtime that day.

Hi Izzy & MJ. What a horribly sad story. Like you said, most likely could have been prevented. A few safety items we do is a pull test. We have a 5th wheel and once we are hooked up to the truck we raise the jacks to where the front is only about 2-3" off the ground, hold the brakes in on the trailer and pull forward with the truck to make sure the jaws to the hitch are 100% locked in. If for whatever reason they are not and the trailer comes dislodged from the truck it will land on the front jacks and not crush the truck or trailer. Also, like you mentioned, always check the pin on the hitch of a 5th wheel and travel trailer if you leave it unattended when going into a store, etc. At fuel stops and stores we never leave the rig unattended if one of us has to go into the store the other stays in the truck. We hope you are all doing well and safe travels!

The problem is folks are lazy and don’t develop a routine. A checklist does this. Even today at 70 yrs of age fifty dome years after my discharge I use checklists. It’s common sense.’oh am still notified andnsubscribried.

And/or if you can even teach common sense? People, newbies crash airplanes for the strangest reasons, Things we would take for granted. So how do we teach common sense? If it happens enough they are going to regulate it. A lot of us don't want that, but may have to suffer because of the few who need it. I guess.... Sad --gary

Some people might not need one but that might be something someone could write up with each type of Rv and label it class B , ClassA , 5th wheel safety checklist just to be 100% and if people want it they can get it on someone’s facebook page or whatever

You have a good informational page and you should be complimented for taking your time to remind people of things that should be innate. It is a sad day when you have to remind people to secure their vehicle before getting out. It reminds me of people walking down the street staring at a cell phone and running into a lamp post. I have actually seen that happen, as well as people losing control of their vehicle combination, especially with boat trailers and boat ramps.

I am not an RVer nor an aviation person (I also subscribe to a few aviation channels), but one of the aviation channels (either growler jams or flyrobroy{sp?}) was showing us he and his partner landing on an aircraft carrier. Due to various issues, it took them 3 tries until they were able to land. And as he narrated this for us, he would point to his co-pilot and say "he is doing the landing checklist" and then on the 2nd attempt "he is doing the landing checklist" and yep, on the 3rd and what was the final attempt, again, "he is doing the landing checklist." His point: Checklists are there for a reason, do them EVERY TIME NO MATTER WHAT. What does that have to do with RVing? Well, I am guessing you probably have a pretty good idea of what has to happen when you leave a camping site and what to do when you arrive at one. I certainly don't know what the items on those checklists would be, but I imagine you have them, but maybe people who have been doing this for a while and think they're going to remember everything. Write them down. Post them in obvious places. Cross-check just like flight attendants and pilots and co-pilots. As I've gotten older, my memory just for regular stuff, sometimes leaves me wondering what was I going to get at the store. Oh, one other thing about the printed checklists: put them in like a photo sleeve so they don't get damaged. And it's easy to remove them for an updated one.

Yes that is sad that the woman was killed. Something else is when un hooking the car from or to the towbar. I always put it in park while hooking up. I have seen people chasing their car because they didn't put it in park or use the emergency break. When un hooking on a slope. Watched a guy at a rally hooking up and the car rolled forward before he got the towbar hooked up and almost pined him between the bumpers. Be safe out there. As you noted Diesel RVs don't have a "park" in their transmission like a car. If you don't set the break in can roll. Just to clarify on a coach with air breaks if you loose air you can't get the breaks to release.

Good points. I'm really bad about not using my emergency brake. I take for granted that 22,000lbs plus isn't going anywhere but I need to get out of that mindset.

I always put a lock on all my pins as several years back someone pulled one on me while inside paying for fuel, It only took that one time of having to hand crank in 115 degree Arizona sunshine for me to spend the money on pin locks. Not to mention the damage to both my truck and pride.

An ounce of prevention, it's always worth a pound or more of cure. When you stop, slow down, and like another suggested, have a checklist on the dashboard so you can be like a professional airline pilot Checking off all the necessary things one should to stay safe!

Using parking brakes, wheel chocks, and turning the steering wheel, reminds me of the "Swiss Cheese" model. Adding layers. When I was a mechanic, it was repeatedly drilled into us, at least once a year of the "Swiss Cheese" model of accident causation. Imagine slices of swiss cheese in a row. The slices represented safety. If someone sent an arrow, and the arrow was stopped by a slice, then catastrophe was averted. But if the holes happened to line up perfectly, and the arrow made it through, then there was an accident. One of our duties, while on the job, was to add as many slices of swiss cheese as possible to maintain safety. If we discovered a hole in our safety, we needed to plug it. I won't say what company or what city, but in the industry that I was in at the time, there was a worker that went into a trash compactor for repair or maintenance, anyways, despite being a 1 man job, it was officially a 2 man job because company policy required that a second person be outside the compactor and stand guard. That was literally the second person's job, was to just stand there and do nothing. But for whatever reason, the second person was never assigned, so a slice of cheese was missing. That missing slice shouldn't of caused an accident however, because the worker did place a lock-out on the controls to the compactor before going inside, thus disabling the compactor. But during the repair, the supervisor came, seeing the compactor not in service and upset that they were falling behind schedule, removed the lock-out and activated the compactor with the worker inside. By removing the lock-out, the supervisor removed the last "slice" and the holes lined up perfectly to allow an accident to happen. Had there of been a second worker, the one that just stood there and did nothing, he could of told the supervisor that there was a man inside. Or the supervisor could of, and should of, considered that lock-outs are placed for a reason. Probably a grotesque way of looking at it, but it's what was taught to me, the "Swiss Cheese" model.

Horrible. And I don’t know if that was the case here, but so many company safety policies only seem to exist to provide plausible deniability for the company. They aren’t enforced at all, and in fact the employees and managers are strongly disincentivized from implementing them. That’s a story I have heard over and over again.

NASHWAUK, Minn. - A Florida woman from Silver Springs, was killed in northern Minnesota after her truck and trailer rolled away from their parking spot and fatally struck her, according to the Itasca County Sheriff's Office. Deputies from the sheriff's office initially responded to the scene in Nashwauk for a report of a hit-and-run at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to a release.

If you watch S&S and the RV cats, they have a fifth wheel, and while working under the hitch area Sal walked into the hitch and really hurt himself, and had a concussion as well. He now wears a bicycle helmet when working under there to prevent it happening again. He’s a very careful guy, not the type to lose his concentration so it’s a good example to follow, even the best of us can get distracted.

Do you understand how air brakes work? When you set the brakes the air is exhausted from the system and very strong springs inside the brake canister are what sets the brakes. The air actually compresses the springs and release the brakes when you push it the button on the dash.

Hindsight is 20/20, but one needs a checklist to confirm things are safe before one moves on. My cousin was killed when her truck ran over her. She left her two small children in the truck with the engine running while she checked under the hood. One of the children popped it into gear and it ran over her. She died in the hospital. So sad...and real.

Brutal...so sad...my heart goes out to her family! Incidentally, last year after an RV outing, I rolled up to the gated yard where we keep the Millennium Falcon (aka...2015 Fleetwood Southwind 34A)...When I hopped out of the RV, I neglected to put the tranny in park and no EB either. The damn thing rolled forward into the gate, causing $15K in vehicle and property damage. Never in my life have I exited a vehicle and not put the tranny in P and set the EB...things happen when you least expect it...I was lucky, it could have been a lot worse!!

Air brakes are applied by springs when the air is off, supplying air overcomes the springs, releasing the brakes. That’s why you pay attention if the low air warning sounds while you’re driving, because the brakes WILL apply if the air gets low enough.

I use a seat-belt leash and doggy hammock to keep my dog in the back seat at all times. Not only does it prevent them from accidentally releasing or engaging something, it keeps them safer in an accident as well as assuring they're not flying around in the cab killing others in an accident.
