@Cameleonfleuri Its a nice thought, but this illness is basically bird AIDS. It destroys not only beak, claws and feathers but also the immune system. Without a good caring humans help, the lifespan of a bird infected in the "chronic" phase is measured in months. With lots of care and a little luck they can live years. But it is a chronic illness. Theres no cases of any bird completely clearing the virus, although some can get to subclinical (but still contageous) levels after the "acute" phase is over - they never get to the "chronic" phase. This illness is a major issue, its decimating australian bird populations.

@@childofcascadia Thanks for the info but still, I have few people around me that miraculously outlived a fatal desease... For exemple a lady, a friend of a good friend of mine, was diagnosed a terminal cancer and she had been told by the doctors that she had only 4 to 6 months to live, maximum. Well, she completely cured and is still doing well today, 10 years and a half later! And I could give you more examples but what I mean here is that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE, EVER... and LOVE CAN DO WONDERS. That's all!

@@mankythecockatoo you have done an amazing job with her. Poor girl.... how did she forage with that long beak? Poor baby! I do bird rescue, and I'd recommend building her a play stand from sticks and branches for her to climb on outdoors, then putting it away after use (if you have a shed or garage), so other birds don't climb where she has been, thus preventing others from getting PBFD. If you are in Melbourne, I can make you one. Also, try spraying her feathers with aloe vera mixed with water.... it could help her feathers grow and protect them from damage. I do feel sorry for the vets as they are forced to do so a lot of the time. We just need more understanding about the potential some of these birds have if we give them a chance ❤❤

I think the vets are concerned about the potential spread of an extremely contagious disease, and this is just a nightmare of one. Also, the bird would have NO DOUBT come to a tortuous end on its own in the wild with PBFD, unable to escape predators, unable regulate its body temperature, not able to forage for food or even eat with the beak issues after a time. Quality of life issue, so I understand why a vet would suggest it. It's not everyday someone offers to completely change their lifestyle in order to take in and care for a bird like this. It's truly extraordinary and wonderful and I'm so glad for Manky. ❤

It's not that the vets want to do this without a reason. PBFD is very contagious and affects the material of the beak and feathers, which causes brittle and abnormal growths as seen with Manky, and there is no cure for it, and no treatment for the infected birds. It is a super contagious and enduring viral pathogen, sort of like bird AIDs, and destroys the immune system of infected avians. The reason it is not common among wild flocks or that you don't see it often, is because the disease incapacitates birds and makes them vulnerable to predation. But it still recurs in nature, because the virus can live for decades in nesting materials and dens.

@@StoicVeR yes it truly is horrendous. And it would be great if every sick PBFD bird had a home but unfortunately it’s just not possible. We are working with the scientists at Charles Sturt University to get the vaccine out there to release into the wild but there’s a long way to go with that. After that they’ll be focusing on the cure. It’s unfortunate how many native species are suffering diseases we really need more awareness

Our ChaCha is very spoiled too! She has very few feathers and a severe underbite as well. We have to Dremel her lower beak down every few weeks. These two are so similar. ChaCha has run of the house, she lets herself in and out of her cage. She tells me exactly what she wants when she wants it. 😏 We love the little poop!

@Manky The Cockatoo I'm not sure 100% I'd say yes, but she is a plucker as well, and I believe the areas that she has over-plucked she's damaged the follicles to the point where the feather just won't grow anymore. When we got her she was nearly bare. I grew up with birds so I know them a little better than the last owners did. She is ours for the next 50 years or so! She's only about 20-22. Silly girl.

My yellow crested cockatoo has the same disease. He was diagnosed about 20 months ago. He definitely needs a lot of attention and happily I have that time. He has gone through various stages of condition. His top part of the beak grew really long and dropped off and then the bottom part grew long and dropped off. His beak looks better and has been stable for quite a while now. I have thought it was close to the end for him a couple of times but he just kept bouncing back. He is just happy to be with me all the time which is lovely but I need a break sometimes otherwise I would get nothing done. I have had many pets including birds in my lifetime and I am a older man. He has been my favourite and melts my heart. Lots of work though when you have one of these gorgeous birds out of it's cage in your home. So glad to see someone else with the same bird with same Beak and Feather disease. It would be great to compare notes. KINDEST REGARDS MICHAEL
