A bit of searching popped up an A40 serial that was sold in December 2016 and an A122 serial in November 2017 and 6 years ago someone claimed to be selling a two digit A serial. All the other ones I could find where of a higher A serial than yours. The history and the build quality of the original Royal Oak is pretty amazing for the time and still holds up. I think it would make a nice video to show how well certain watches were made 40-50 years ago.

Hi Roman - awesome video, as usual! You were pretty close on the original price of the Royal Oak. When launched at at the Basel watch fair in 1972, the original Royal Oak “Jumbo” ref. 5402 ST was priced at SFr3500, (approx US$918 at the time) about 30 times a steel Rolex Submariner ...and was preposterously expensive. To put it into perspective, it was also the equivalent to the amount a male worker in Sweden received in wages for 252 hours of work 1972.

Hi Roman, I had a Zenith steel Daytona, I purchased it in 1999, I was on a list and the original person did not have the funds so I was lucky enough to pick this up. Loved that watch but I sold it in 2009, I was out of work for 7 months, financial crisis and all that. I have no idea what the serial number is which is a good thing I guess, prices have gone crazy and will continue to. The Kermit was not hard to come by when launched, mine was sitting in the window of an AD, why have the prices gone up so much for this watch? Is it simply that they are wanted by collectors? I had the bezel replaced because the pearl was cracked which means it came back all polished up, does this have a detrimental effect on the price? I think I will start wearing it again to get it scratched up! Some questions for Q&A, an answer to anyone will do. Thanks, Martin.

I'm impressed! I have no idea how you can wear any Offshore with that A-series in your possession. I have always thought that the Royal Oaks from the 90s were ugly watches but I'm impressed to see that the original is just as sharp as the newer Royal Oaks. But you need to get your screws aligned, that would just mess with my OCD. Again thanks for sharing.
@RomanSharf6 жыл бұрын
believe it or not it comes with the screws the way you see them :-)
@orestlachowycz41436 жыл бұрын
So you've never had it apart/serviced and can't put them back the current way? Also are the screws steel or gold? I've always thought gold screws may contribute to the poor water resistance and I can totally live with steel for the sake of water protection.

Your opinion, in the eyes of Gérald Genta which design would he consider more iconic: Royal Oak or Nautilus? Or he would admire the work of Jorg Hysek in Over Seas? From what I know Genta hated the concept of time and it's constraint.

thanks again and again you post great videos .... I have a question, maybe you have answered it in a video ... its about beats per hour ... rolex 28 800 ... Grand Seiko 36 000 ... royal oak 21.600 ... so as I understand its something to do with reliability or how accurate it is - right. ? I trying to get money for a AP royal oak ... would you recommend it as an only watch daily driver ...or would a rolex be a better choice. ? if I compare it to cars I think ... a Lamborghini is a not a daily driver where a Porsche 911 could be your daily driver in terms of comfort and reliability :) hehe just dreaming about the cars too ... hope you understand my question ... cheers chris

A few months ago I bought a Tudor gmt from an AD. On Saturday it is going back to Tudor for the 3rd time since June. Each time it loses substantial time - this last time it lost 9 mins in 15 hours. The AD is asking the Tudor sales rep to replace the watch and Tudor says it needs to go back for the 3rd time for repair. I feel like I have a lemon. What are my options ?

Hi Roman, great video again! I'm looking at the Day-Date 1803 in gold just plain dial and on bracelet. It seems really hard to find them with the original gold bracelet with box and papers. Quick question, isn’t it better to roll the money than keep it blocked in a lot of Daytonas? You said you work on a 5-10% margin, hypothetically you only roll it once a month it brings you 20k a year x 15 years = 300k. You’re the expert with insider knowledge but it’s hard to believe that even the zenith Daytonas are gonna reach the numbers paul newmans do, just because they were made in vastly bigger numbers
