I am very happy to have been recommended your channel Dr. Haver. I'm looking for women who are trained professionals talking to *women* about intermittent fasting. The support is important to me as I adopt this lifestyle for the rest of my life. I started on June 6 and I'm losing weight and feeling very good. Dr. Jason Fung was who I discovered on June 1st and I've been building my fasting strategy with his input and wanted additional information to help me during my IF journey. I look forward to watching more of your videos. (Fyi, you will have trolls and it will take time to ignore them and not give them oxygen. Hang in there. Don't even acknowledge them, just pause, block, and move on.)

For my coffee I use coconut milk without additives (just coconut cream and water). As long as it has enough fat content in the cream, it cuts the bitterness and I don’t need dairy or sugar. It also keeps my stomach occupied until I break my fast at 1-3pm with a snack or early dinner. As far as fasting, I found that doing keto helped my body learn to rely on fat as fuel, which made intermittent fasting much easier and kid of a natural transition. After breaking the carb addiction, food cravings reduced and I found myself really only wanting to eat once a day. I kept feeling less inflammation and bloating when I only gave my body one meal to deal with, and additional food made me feel slow, like my body was having to work extra hard to digest everything. I added better carbs and vegetables back in and settled on an intermittent fasting pattern without knowing what it was, and with people telling me it wasn’t healthy. But I felt healthier!! Very validating - thank you 🙏🏻

I think some people only think of IF as extreme like 20/4 or 23/1 and it IS often abused in that people don’t eat enough. So it’s important to make sure you’re doing it correctly with a guide like you.

I agree with you. I am in several IF groups on FB and some of those ladies fast for days at a time. Personally, I can't do that 16:8 or at most 18:6 is the max for me and when I bleed into the 18:6 it's not on purpose.

I agree with letting your body adapt to intermittent fasting. I started with 12 hours a day, then 16, then 18, then 20. It's been almost 3 years now of fasting. Now I only do 18 and 20 hour fasts with 36 hour fasts anytime I feel a bit bloated or out of sorts. I've lost 40 pounds since I started fasting. I have 10 or so to go to reach my personal goal. But I fast because it makes me feel good. It definitely cannot sustain weight loss after years of doing it. I still have to watch what I eat and exercise. But overall I am healthier because of fasting. I just turned 48 and I can proudly say doing IF is a lifestyle for me. I will never go back to eating throughout the entire day again. Fasting fixed my digestive issues that started in my mid 40's.

I've been doing IF for two and a half years now and my cholesterol is still through the roof. My doctor has presecribed statins and I've been on them for about one year now with no changes in my levels. Do you have any suggestions? I'd LOVE to stop taking the statins. I feel AMAZING while fasting and I have so much energy and clarity. I did lose weight with it in the past but the older I get the less it works for that. I would highly recommend that anyone fast for a better lifestyle. It has changed my life!

I was never much of a breakfast eater to begin with, so I jumped into 16:8 with no issues, with a window of eating between 8 a.m. until 4. I tend to get up around 6, so have 2 hours to fight off the habit of half and half in my coffee - so I will try the salt and cinnamon, cuz waiting until 8 for that first cup of joe is not fun when you have to get going with chores etc by 6:30! But in 8 days, I lost 3 lbs, so am very happy that my body adapted quickly to burning fat after that first 12 hours. I am doing a 18:6 now, because it just feels more comfortable, more natural for me.

I learned about IF through Autumn Bates here on YT. I started about 6 weeks ago. I love it. One thing she suggested for coffee is to use up to 1T only of light or heavy cream if you don't like black. She also suggests keto coffee if you get hungry over your fast. That is organic coffee blended with 1T grassfed butter. She is a nutritionist. Curious to know your thoughts. I happen to love keto coffee. I fast until 1030am and the keto coffee satisfies me until my eating wondow

I have had a very positive experience with IF and I have been doing it for almost 2 years now. I have a family history of diabetes. I am not overweight or pre-diabetic/ diabetic at this time in my life But my grandmother, recently my mother and cousins and aunts, all female, have been diagnosed with diabetes. I have been athletic the majority of my life but now I’m in my mid 40s and gained 10 lbs this last few years (Covid was a significant factor). My height is 5’7” and I currently weight 147 lbs. I noticed my A1C had gotten a little higher than normal. The highest A1C I have ever had is 5.6. I heard about IF and did a little research before I decided to try it myself. It was a gradual adjustment but it has become a normal routine for me. I do a 16/8 hr window. When I had my next yearly annual physical (11 months ago) with my PCP, my A1C reduced significantly from 5.6 to 5.0. So, it does work to help control blood sugar levels. Along with IF, i have made many changes in my diet that include a reduction in my daily carbohydrate intake but not totally restricting carbs. I incorporated HIIT and strength workouts several days a week. I have lost about 3 lbs but most importantly, gained muscle mass so the weight loss does not seem so significant because of the increase in muscle mass. I want to hold off as long as I can or even prevent acquiring diabetes in my lifetime.

Oh my goodness, I am in exact the same boat! All it has done is help my body feel and look better but I cannot loose weight no matter what I do! I eat pretty clean, low carb, no dairy, I follow the glucose revolution eating foods in the right order, calorie track, do 18:6 or 20:4, OMAD at times, change my fasting windows, add 36-41 hr fasts on the weeks when it would work for my cycle, work out regularly, etc! I'm at a loss. The only things left is Alternate day fasting. I guess I might have to go longer to empty my glucose stores? I think when you don't have much to loose it's really hard. I still love it for the other non scale benefits it gives me, and I will say I haven't been GAINING so that's a good thing. But it's a little discouraging seeing so many people just loose 40 lbs in 4 months and they are doing way less than I am! 🙈

Hi! My understanding from Dr Jason Fung and Gin Stephens is that yes, any fasting is beneficial, but dramatic weight loss results take more effort. I still feel more energy working out with some food verses fasted, but I often do work out in a fasted state anyway. It helps burn through your glucose stores and forces the body to go into fat burning mode sooner. I don't notice it as much when I do strength training if I'm fasted or not, but I do still notice with cardio. Blessings on the journey. I love fasting and will never go back.

RN here. Teenagers don’t need to fast! You’re growing. What you do need to do is eat healthily. Organic foods, limit junk food or ideally stop it altogether. Eat grains, pulses, salads, protein, fish, fruit and veg. Keep active physically and mentally. Young people don’t need this. x

Wondering if you’ll change your stance on this as the most recent research on intermittent fasting shows it causes more muscle loss than calorie restriction alone. It seems most or all of the benefits we see from IF are due to the fact that it tends to result in calories restriction when you look more closely at the studies.
@haylslouise8428 Жыл бұрын
Fasting increases certain hormones that aim to preserve muscle, as your body wants you to go and hunt for food. And the benefits are not from the calorie restriction, they're from lowered insulin levels.

I was a little concerned about your cholesterol comments! There are so many studies that point to inflammation as the culprit when it pertains to heart disease and that cholesterol rallies to the site of inflammation as a protective device. Meaning cholesterol is not the problem, the inflammation is. Encouraging people to take statins which have been shown to cause multiple problems and side effects is bothersome. There are Also many studies that show that decreasing someone’s cholesterol has a higher association with morbidity and mortality, as every single cell in our body needs cholesterol to have healthy cell walls. Would love to hear your comments on this.

Statins don't help women and HRT is better at lowering the risk of death due to heart disease than a statin. :)

I've been fighting the idea of fasting for a while now. I finally gave in and tried it today for the first time. My plan was to start off with 12 hours and increase over the next couple of weeks. I found 14 hours much easier than I thought. Flavored black coffee was my life saver. I normally add a flavored creamer but knowing coffee and water is it, made me enjoyed my two cups. I work out in the morning as soon as I wake up. Will a small amount of Pre-Workout (1/3 scoop) break my fast? I use LIT.

Flavored coffee is also different from regular black coffee and may spike your insulin, which will negate fasting benefits. :( It's hard at first! I also drink plain sparkling water, plain green or black tea. Unflavored and unsweetened is key!

Hi doc. I'm struggling. I need to loose 25kg and l need to loose it in the best possible time. I have never been overweight but started stress eating 7 months ago due to trauma. I have a severe back problem and the extra weight have me on way to much pain killers now. I find the fasting part very easy. Use to fasting at times for religious reasons but I always allowed myself coffee in those times. I'm on day 10 doing 20/24 intermittent fasting I'm very depressed. Never realised I'm so addicted to milk in my coffee. When I wake up and see the black coffee I'm depressed. What do I do. I have enough willpower to bite the bullet but getting more and more depressed over the milk less coffee. What's wrong with me. Sorry if the english aunt perfect. Not my mother tongue.
@irishlizzie Жыл бұрын
Maybe ease up and give yourself a bigger window? Try a little almond milk in your coffee as it's super low in calories and will be far less likely to spike insulin than cow milk? Go easy and slowly increase, especially if it's causing you to be discouraged and depressed. Make sure you have favorite foods in eating window and lots of drink options in fasting window! I now drink 1-2 small cups black coffee, plain sparkling water, plain green or black tea. Having multiple drinks besides regular water PLUS electrolyte powder to add to any of these is hugely helpful. Electrolyte powder is simply sea salt, potassium citrate, and magnesium malate. You can find these on Amazon, mix your own with recipes online or look at LMNT they have "raw" recipes that won't break your fast.

Hi, thank you for the information. I also had headaches occasionally, but I added electrolyte drops to my water and the headaches went away rather quickly.

Do you recommend IF 16/8 everyday. I did for about a year then stopped. I'm going through full menopause now and my belly fat is off the charts. I lift weights 3 days a week. Yoga 1 day. Spin/walk at least 2
