I suspect author of that phrase, regardless if it was the buddha or a later editor, was a male renunciant who was struggling with completely normal sexual desire and blaming the objects of his desire for his struggle.

ACKCHUALLY, even in European Middle Ages the sexual stigma came exactly reversed - the (general, limited, not universal) idea was that men were inclined to reason, comraderie and speculation, and then women would come and drag them down with their insatiable lust; I heard it some years ago by fundamentalist Catholics too (whom in Italy are not so hard to find)

While obviously it doesn't make women inferior and obviously women have more interests than sex, I do think the average woman has a higher libido than the average man, IF she with a partner she's genuinely attracted to. Most modern women simply aren't with men they're that attracted to, which is where the idea comes from that women don't like sex much.
@awakenow7147Ай бұрын
I tend to concur with your non-literalist take. I wonder if its possible that there are some very ancient traces of Vedanta within this part of the Buddhist canon: the idea that woman(Shakti/Prakriti) is the "receiver" of energy from Shiva. Shakti requires the energy of Shiva to energize her world. This energy keeps the cycle of life and death going. It can almost seem like Shakti's desire and hunger for life is insatiable. From my understanding of things, the most ardent followers of Shiva want to cut off this energy flow to Shakti...as it gives life to the cycle of reincarnation, and therefore the suffering of all beings. It isn't so much about actual physical gender, but more about cosmic archetypes. A man or woman who is on the path of Shiva can escape the clutches of Shakti, and be free. Hence, becoming a true "man" and rejecting the hunger of the "woman". A true "man"(Shiva)isn't beholden to life's unending desires, but a "woman"(Shakti) is. Before anyone points this out, I want to make it clear that not all Vedanta followers believe this; only a small group of them do. But it seems that this small groups has a significant amount in common with Buddhists.

Just wanted to add my own two cents to this, because I feel that it's a complex and fascinating topic! The framework by the Tiantai school in China placed the Lotus Sutra as the most authoritative scripture, as it claims to be the sutra which "casts off" expedient means and gives the most profound doctrine (it does still employ expedient means, but that goes into more complex doctrinal stuff). Because of this, all other scriptures would have been necessarily viewed through this analytical lens of "expedient means," i.e. they were teachings given to specific beings with specific capacities and proclivities. This is the framework that was passed on to the Tendai school in Japan and, as a result, to the Kamakura schools which split off from Tendai (although the Pure Land schools view the larger Amida Sutra as the true teaching for the latter age, but that’s a whole other can of worms). Dogen, who was originally trained under Tendai, would have almost certainly learned about this as well. The Lotus Sutra illustrates the capacity for women to become enlightened via the story of the Dragon King’s daughter, who offers a priceless pearl to Shakyamuni Buddha and subsequently attains awakening, becoming a Buddha herself (and shocking the whole assembly in the process). The Dragon King’s daughter was both female and non-human, showing the universality of Buddha-nature. If the Lotus Sutra is taken as authoritative, this is the final say in the matter. While the Nirvana Sutra is placed in the same “period” of teaching under the Tendai organizational framework, it is still subject to the lens of expedient means and, in fact, tells us this directly in the text itself. I recall you did a video on the Buddhist notions of “the self” and read a parable from the Nirvana Sutra explaining the Buddha’s reasoning in this (the milk medicine one). I believe that this particular passage regarding women is used in the same way as the “self.” Many in his assembly already hold the view that they wish to be born as a “man” in the next life. Here, the Buddha subverts that notion by claiming that they can attain this same status as a "man" simply by accepting and understanding the doctrines he has laid out. A metaphor for this strategy can be read in the Lotus Sutra, where a father rescues his children from a burning house by telling them that their “toys” are outside. The “toys” represent things that are of no importance to an enlightened being, but are given high value by the ignorant. In this particular instance, the Buddha is using gender distinction, something that a Buddha would normally view as empty. Also iirc the texts That Dogen viewed as possibly being apocryphal were the Shurangama and Perfect Enlightenment Sutras. And, I will go and watch your music video now, so please don't be sad face emoji!!!!

Misogyny, hatred of the body, and patriarchy are endemic to all the axial religions, especially within monastic settings of celibate monks. Men project the fear of their own sexual desires onto women. Repression leads to projection. The Buddha was not exempt from the religious conditioning of this view. Enlightenment doesn’t necessarily challenge those deeply held beliefs of the period or the unconscious mechanisms of projection

There was this Thai physician who, when he decided to be a monk (Theravada) for some time, used the time to make a medico-legal study of the death of the Buddha. He states in his article that the four various Maha Parinirvana Sutras extant have one common basis, in which the Buddha complains of his being old and tired and sick, but where each has its own kind of miraculous interpolations in it. Which induces me to think that, the Old Man barely dead, some immediately started to phantasise about his miraculous powers, each sect in its own specific manner. And that brahmins who would have adhered to the order because of the prestige of the Buddha himself, would have felt frustrated to have to share it with untouchables, workers, and worst of all, (shudder) women!

Coming from a more orthodox perspective, I find the kinds of authority that zen Buddhists appeal to to be a lack of faith in the triple gem. Zen Buddhists don't explicitly reject the triple gem, though, which I why it's not worth getting into. They would implore that there's different but valid approaches to faith in which a person doesn't abandon their battle for superior views in favor of the training.

Interesting how the theology of returning is used (over and over and over) to justify hierarchies, even in the minds of people who claim to abide in equanimity. I feel like this is a record of a Buddha who is speaking temporarily without wisdom or vision, and was not, at the time of this speech, enlightened. Some Buddhas are probably of a higher proof.
@soma_182Ай бұрын
The passage he read is not present in the Pali version of the sutta, which is much older than the Mahayana version he is reading, so I'm going to go with that the Buddha (most likely) didn't say this and it was added in a later Mahayana school. it definitely seems... out of place from anything else I've read in the Pali suttas.
@elzoogАй бұрын
Hierarchies are natural because some people are simply better at certain things than other people. Some people are better at mechanics (as an example) than others. Some people are better leaders than other people. This is necessary because we are limited beings. It takes A LOT of effort to become a good mechanic and if you spend that much effort, you aren't going to have anything left over to become a good doctor, or a good computer programmer. The fact that pretty much ALL societies are patriarchal to one degree or another tells you something.
@Perceval777Ай бұрын
You say it as if the word "hierarchy" itself is something bad... Hierarchies are one of the most natural things in this world. They can be good or bad, spiritual or corrupt, competent or incompetent. Buddhism has a vast hierarchical system - Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Gandharvas, Devas, etc. The enlightened and unenlightened. When you go to a temple as a novice, you are not the equal of the experienced master who teaches you meditation. If someone thinks he is, what big ego he must have... You can check out Traditionalism, authors like Rene Guenon and Ananda Coomaraswamy - they've written extensively on the topic. There is no such thing as equality in ancient, traditional, authentic spirituality, including Buddhism, at least not in the modern sense. Even modern political ideologies like socialism and progressive liberalism simply replace one hierarchy with another one (and a definitely more unjust and incompetent one at that, if we look at both historical and modern-day examples).

Literalists are ocd types hypocrites, memorised scriptures like a robot mechanical, lacking true life and actions ( karma) , they may appear very showy with their preaching or learnt phds or theologies … all of them are the spoken Taos. If Tao is spoken then its false if its claimed or labelled as mine then its false. Only a child like innocent heart has tao yet hes unknown divine and never claimed because he has less or no ego. Tao also doesnt ignore evils and such actions but fight with truth by being truthful like a warrior. For this a man must be very mind ful and metacognizant in observing oneself seeing where we are failing , brutally honest to oneself. Such men are rare but trillions and gurus speak pf philosophies and gospels . A man who has not have inner light within is not a truthful body and mind so he is only a talker of Tao yet the talk is false diluted distorted and personalised. Most religious people benchmark their devotion or spiritual growth by picking on others and shaming them. They never see inside of their own. This then is a spiritual ego and sign of. evil in sheeps clothes. True spirituality is for man who has inner light within , not having Buddha, enlightenment, emptiness, knowledge, yoga, gods , scriptures etc. Be truthful!
