Disclaimer for anyone who has read this far: I recreated this costume as a tribute to the women from my own family and from multiple photos from 1890. My armband is for educational purposes and not to be worn in any real life experiences. I am not a nurse and only wanted to recreate a uniform worn by women at work in 1890.

Yes! Including the photos was a really nice touch. I appreciate that to reinforce the authenticity.

I was lucky enough to find a little metal mesh chatelaine coin purse at a flea market a few years back, now I’m on the hunt for a clip for it. I would love to assemble a full set someday!

I vaguely remember the uniforms, caps and capes that NHS hospital nurses still wore in the early 1980s, when I was a child. It would be a shock for a 19th century nurse to see all medical, auxillary, and cleaning staff wearing coloured scrubs to denote their role, with nothing worn below the elbow, for infection control.

Being a nurse myself, I loved this. Graduated in 1993. Part of one of our courses was learning how the early nurses worked. They would rise early, before sunrise. They usually had dormitories in the hospital. Build up the fires for warmth and to cook patient meals and their own. Scrub the floors and units. Change dressings. Bathe the patients. And perform whatever treatments the doctors prescribed. There were some nurses who rode horseback in the wilderness to take care of patients. They were more like doctors for their communities. We work hard now, but I think they worked harder.

Ok, so apparently I talk too much and have been put into a bit of a words diet😅 so Just, three things i gotta absolutely say: 1- That was absolutely GORGEOUS, 2- you look STUNNING, and 3- I am DEEPLY in LOVE with all your content, but most of all, with that nurse outfit. It's a dream and I am deeply envious but in a good way, because it really suit you and you look perfect! Please keep giving us such amazing content, even though we probably don't deserve you🥺

@@smw9735 I only have talks too much and over explains, or one word answers. They aren't going to be happy either way, because their problem is never what you've said in my experience. My actual friends don't care if I spend hours breaking down everything I like about a movie. They don't care that I'm bad at playing games, or anything, they're just happy I showed up. Though I think it was appreciated that I brought home made gluten free chex mix the last time I saw them. (For reference, I didn't know till last summer they were gluten intolerant because they have always eaten gluten around me, and just been fine with the consequences.) 😂

@@s.f.nightingale1735 honestly same, I'm usually the time who talks for hours and probably says little or can convey stuff with few words, depends on the mood, but well, few days ago I was sorta sulking I guess, cause i was having a bad day, so i kinda needed some attention, and so i started talking to people, and i ended up talking about something to someone important to me, and it was something I was or rather, am, passionate about so I let myself just talk and talk and then that person sort of made a joke about me talking them into an early grave via boredom and I stopped but then that person kept making jokes even days later and well, i kept thinking about at unfortunate times and I was already on a down mood, and then my mood just plummeted further because of reasons and.... I guess... I don't know why am telling you this, but the point is, I think I'm having a pity party and having any support right now is just, it feels nice, so thank you so much, this actually lifted my mood a tad, you're very nice, and I'm sorry I just dumped my problems on you, but it's sort of soothing, it's probably silly and not very nice of me, but, still, sorry, and thank you.

May I offer two suggestions. Your watchfob pin was worn on the left breast so that your right hand would be free to take a pulse while you use your left hand to hold up your watch to look at it. Above your watch would have been your nurses pin very important to nurses to this very day. No uniform is complete without it. Lovely presentation. This nurse of 45yrs is delighted. 💝

The number of layers is staggering, it must weigh so much. I can't imagine going to so much effort every single day, when I'm the sort who'd rather throw a flannel shirt on and call it done. I also didn't know the hip pads were a separate piece! I'd always assumed it was part of the corset's hip pads

You would have grown up with layers and as you matured, the layers would have changed so your body got used to the weight Also the corset actually helps with the weight distribution and support.

Perhaps if they wore less clothes more people could survive 🙄
@elenalizabeth
@elenalizabeth 5 ай бұрын
Ah yes, because wearing less clothes could be a substitute for having antibiotics, anti-malarials, anti-fungals etc. 🙄🙄🙄 Wearing more layers not only kept them warm/cool depending on the climate, but also there are historical documentation about women wearing heavy layers like this being protected from being injured by shrapnel because the layers of fabric/whalebones caught the shrapnel.
