Nah, I specifically asked my husband to NOT get an expensive ring because I knew I would only wear it until the wedding and would find it super wasteful to spend thousands of € that we could rather use for the wedding. He got a 70 € silver ring for me and another one for himself because he was so proud to be engaged to me and wanted to show everyone. Expensive engagement rings come from a very successful promotion campaign of the jeweler industry. It's not important that the ring is expensive, it's important that the person really wants to marry you. What use is an extremely expensive shut-up ring? You can sell it later, yes, but it does not bring you a happy relationship.

Ok, I get marriage is an important thing in the US, in my home country it's not. And the unmarried couples from my generation are the most stable relationships I have personally encountered so far. In the meantime, I am enjoying my long term grass widow life and the gift of having to raise the legitimate child all alone with no support whatsoever. The ring doesn't mean a thing if one partner is running away, refusing to participate in the marriage and sabotaging all efforts to raise the child (and raise it properly).

I think in a lot of other countries, there are legal protections for spouses even if the couple isn't 'married'. In my country, common-law marriage laws kick in after 5 years of cohabitation. There's a lot of other legalese but some property rights can kick in as well. I don't know if the US has that kind of protection but it feels as if it doesn't. I could be wrong, but maybe that's why there's so much riding on marriage like that.

Yeah, that's what my ex did. Once when I was working for 3 hours and the babysitter had called off he had to stay alone with our children. When I got home they had locked themselves in a room for the last couple hours, oldest caring for the baby because my husband had thrown a chair. I mean: Nothing against a cheap engagement ring. A 5 € ring from a man who loves, respects and values you is worth SO much more than a 5000 € shut-up ring from a person that sees you only as an opportunity. When we talked about marriage, I told my husband that I did not want an expensive engagement ring because I would only wear it until the wedding. He got me a 70 € ring and bought another one for himself because he was so happy to be engaged. There's nothing wrong with that, is it? But you should have the same priorities. Begging someone to marry you who does not want to is so sad. I hope those women will find someone who really loves them.

I have a short story. I remember when I was with someone for a while. I mentioned that I wanted a promise ring. He tells me to pick one out, and he'd get it, and gave me a price range on the limit. I picked one, but then I saw an alexandrite color changing ring that was perfect. I told him I wanted that one instead, and he got mad, and rushed me to pick one. Ended up getting me the one I didn't want. After that, I ended up buying myself the one I wanted, and kept it as a reminder to never settle for anything.

Yup that's true statement if i ever seen one. I was dating a man for 4 years, when I sugested beong it he said that he can't because I have mental problems. I had depresive episode that time and he knew that that was his fault. Don't belive them that the day will come, there is always an exscuse.

I think she feels stuck now that she has 3 children. But he clearly said that he hasn’t found the person he wants to marry. So he basically just told her that she’s placeholder. You should NEVER have to force anyone into something that they truly don’t want to do. Why would you even want to live with the possible thought that this person didn’t really want you? Every time you get into a argument it might turn into, “see, that’s why I didn’t want to get married”. Every time you have a complaint it’s “you’re the one who wanted us to get married”. If you want marriage, and they don’t, the only option is to walk away… but trying to force a man into this decision is most likely not going to end well.
