This is why people living in abusive families don’t share their ordeal...people deny their experience. Just because something never happened to you doesn’t mean it didn’t happen to someone else. Smh people be so annoying and apathetic.

As a first born daughter to a Ghanaian mother who then also emigrated? Yeah this is a very very honest ugly truth that no one really wants to talk about. YOUR CHILD IS NOT A MAID CARETAKER...LET THEM BE KIDS! Because the way you treat your kids now is most likely how they're going to treat you when you need them. If they even want anything to do with you.

I grew up exactly like this and it is extremely exhausting. No one understands that you will clean until you drop dead with family like this. You can spend the whole day cleaning and they will trash the place within an hour, and leave you to do clean up again. They are making her out to be the problem so they don’t have to face themselves. It’s calling scapegoating. If you didn’t live it you just don’t know.

I hate when people use the "But they clothed and housed and fed you!" argument. Her parents made the choice to bring her into this world and are at a minimum legally obligated to provide food, housing, clothing, and have her enrolled in public school. Her parents also made the choice to deliberately be messy and disgusting to hoarder levels. I get it - we all have messes and can be lazy here and there. They have half a rotting watermelon, ants and mice, dirty dishes piled up, and a bathroom that's rotting, and expect her to be Cinderella and just clean it up all the time? I genuinely feel bad for her, she seems like a smart and strong young woman, I'm hoping all the best for her and that she remains resilient and determined. Her parents don't deserve praise, and always remember you never know what's going on behind closed doors.

My aunt used to make me take out and wash every dish, every spoon, every pot out of the cabinets on Sundays… We had 3 bathrooms, i was to clean them Tues, Wed, & Thursday.. We had carpet, instead of allowing me to use the vacuum cleaner, I had to sweep it… Oh If I cleaned the kitchen at night & someone left something in the sink, she would wake me up with a bucket of water, because somehow it was my fault.. I feel so bad for this young lady. Even when she knows in her gut that her disposition is warranted, she continues to state her love for her parents, who have clearly given her the bare minimum. As a parent myself, I do not deserve credit for putting a roof over my child's head, and food in her stomach because that's the least I can do for the child I birthed, and who didn't ask, nor have a choice to be in this world. We should be providing our kids with more than just shelter and food. Our kids deserve to be nurtured physically and mentally. Our kids deserve a comfortable home, and to be able to trust that we will put their best interests before our own. Our kids do not deserve to be manipulated, neglected, abused, or made to suffer from our laziness and unwillingness to be better parents.

What people forget is that school isn't for everyone and when you are in her mindspace the military is the last place you should go. And can we normalize telling people feeding and housing and clothing your children is the barest minimum and you don't get a cookie for doing that?

I was not the house maid, I was the house SLAVE, as the oldest of FIVE. I DID join the military and LOVED it. The rules, the uniform, the CLEANLINESS! Being able to SLEEP safely(another entire issue). Not being run ragged and they cannot strike you. Other people cried in basic training...and I was standing there, thinking to myself...this is HEAVEN. It was so bad, my physically and verbally a**sive mother tried to force me to quit high school at 16yrs old, to stay at home as free sitter for my siblings. Think on that, trapping me with cooking, cleaning, and FREE child care, and all the responsibilities that YOU as a parent are supposed to be taking care of. If she had a bad day, I felt it. If things were not perfect, I felt it. If she fing felt like it, I FELT IT. If I had to do it all over again, I would join the military again in a heartbeat!!!

Ever since I was 11, I was expected to be the slave of the family and do all of the cooking, cleaning, and laundry, as well as be the free babysitter of the family; to the point where at the age of 13, my biological mother made me switch places with her , as well as me being the one to sacrifice my meal if a grown adult would ever come over to visit during supper, which led to my biological father jumping on board and treating me as if I were his second wife against my will at age 14. Then would make it seem like it was all MY fault that my grades in school plummeted due to me having to do HER job in the house, not to mention the fact that I wasn’t even allowed to have a social life, meanwhile my siblings could have a social life until their heart’s content. And her expecting me to be the family slave continued until I decided to move to the other side of the country.

Yeah they live like animals, how can they even stand to live there? Imagine the SMELL, they must not EVER have people over. I remember people creating work for me to clean, my mother did that. Was there all day and left all the breakfast dishes there to greet me when I got back from school while she just watched TV. I also remember playing second parent to four younger siblings and being called a "bad big sister" when I didn't want to. They can't print enough money for me to relive those days. Now I'm on my own and its "I ain't heard from you in a while, why don't you ever call or come by?"

I lived with my mothers sister for part of high school and a brief time afterwards. She is a cerebral narcissist so my time with her was hell! She treated me like a maid/slave! She would create dishes for me to wash and would constantly barge in my cousins old room (where I slept) to shout about what I didn't do. My older cousin would even throw dishes in the sink while I was washing! I had tons of other chores too. I moved out at 19, just a few months before I turned 20. I never went back!

Mind you both her and her kids always made a mess even deny us food.v today her whole house is a dump and lost all its value. The whole family expect me to stay silent about it and let by gones be by gones because my aunt has found jesus and baptized etc etc...

She said her folks are caring to the world, they’re not they’re just keeping appearances. It’s easier to look good vs being good. That’s all apart of their deniability case (for a lack of a better word). Ppl will say “They couldn’t be like that, they do xyz no way they’re like that” Because of the act they put on. They literally create a character they turn on once they walk out the door. Sis all those things they provided was SUPPOSED to be provided. You don’t owe them a damn thing for being born. That was a decision they made. I hate parents that make their children feel like they owe them something just for being born. I tOoK cArE oF yOu duh you was supposed to take care of the person YOU brought into this world.

This is so very true. I used to have a friend whose parents emigrated over here, they had three children, my friend being the oldest then the brother who was a couple years younger, then the youngest sister a few years younger than the brother. They moved a lot and every house they moved to I would always travel to see her. No matter what, the house always had a certain smell and there was always clothes and clutter EVERYWHERE. I wasn't the typa friend to judge, in fact I'd help her. She was responsible to feed everyone and clean up after everybody. Her brother sometimes helped her but ultimately she took on the role of the parents. The parents worked and when when they weren't working they were sleeping. If she didn't do the chores the parents went OFF. She cooked, she cleaned, she did the household laundry. She would take the sister and brother to school and wherever she went they went. And wherever they went, I went. I really was a loyal friend to her and her family. I'd help her clean, help her cook, stay over despite barely even getting a bed or a blanket to sleep on. Eventually, I realised my friend was taking advantage of my kindness. She only wanted to hang out with me if everyone else was busy, so I was like the last thought. She often stood me up for guys and even putting me in unsafe situations so she could meet up with them. One time she even called me out of my bed to catch a bus to take care of her younger sister (give her a bath, make her breakfast, take a delivery) while her parents worked and she dipped for early morning seggs. That was very early on in the😮 friendship. I should've known then what was up. I gave this girl my loyalty cause I could see that deep down she was hurting. Most likely because of the way her parents treated her compared to her siblings and the situations she unfortunately got caught up in. I had to let the friendship go which was hard for me because I considered her my best friend. We stopped talking for 6 years until she reached out to me. I was pregnant with my first child and she had a child. We stayed in touch for a while but her old habits caught up with her and I realised that when we finally met up again after 6 years, all she did the whole time was message other people on her phone while I was the one keeping the conversation going. At that point I was over it. I blocked her. Hope she's good, hope she's fixed her relationship with her family. Hope now that her siblings are grown her life has changed for the better. At this point in my life I'm a lone wolf, I don't have time for friend or company. There's a lot of damaged people out there who seek to use you instead of seeking help. This goes for friendships, relationships and family.

When I got my first job at 17 my mom was attempting to take my money but I stood up for myself and she couldnt do that. My aunt and uncle live like this. When i was a kid they had me playing babysitter, doing the dishes, and cleaning my cousins room that she would ALWAYS mess up. They had mountain dew boxes stacked in a corner, nearly touching the ceiling. In the hall by the bathroom was a literal mountain of clothes, taller than i was. Theyed leave pots with moldy food on the stove for weeks, and their porch had a single pathway in and out of the door. Rn they live in a different house, one my grandma owns, and they trash it to. But i dont go over there anymore cause theyre the same way the were. The county was literally sending complaints because of how much garabage they had outside, and they didnt even try to clean it. My grandpa had to go clean it up with a truck trailer. (It was messy again within 3 weeks.) Also theyre extremely lazy. I remember once when i was a kid they yelled for me and my cousin, we were on the other end of the house and they yelled like it was URGENT so we ran in there. My aunt looks at me and goes "can you turn on the air conditioner?"......... It was literally 2 feet away.... She just didnt want to stand up. Edit: Omg the thing she said about "if i clean up, theyll go in there JUST to dirty it" is SO fucking true!!! My other uncle does that shit. If i do doshes and clean the kitchen, he goes in there, looks around, and eats JUST because he can. Doesnt matter how late i wait to clean or how soon it is after dinner, he sees clean dishes, he wants to dirty them.

I hear this is very common in the black community. That the girls are treated like the maids. Despite the mess, they have a decent home because they all have en suit room. I understand my mother always expected me to clean the kitchen, if it wasn't done the sink would be full of plates. She was raised to be the maid of her family.
