Women firefighters becoming more common in male-dominated industry

Original airdate: 11/13/2020 | With volunteer firefighter numbers dwindling in Pennsylvania, some fire companies said they're seeing a positive new trend when it comes to new recruits.
"We have to be ready for the unexpected," said Lexi Thompson, a volunteer firefighter with Earl Township Fire Company, "ready for anything to take on."
Lexi, Lauren, Katie and identical twin sisters Kendal and Jordan make up one-fifth of the Earl Township's fire company. That's a pretty big percentage for a male-dominated industry.
"When I joined and saw all the females that were here, I was shocked," said Kendal Moyer, who joined two years after her twin sister, Jordan. "I didn't expect to be surrounded by such strong women."

Um, this segment focuses on volunteer fire fighters. I wonder how many of the commenters, especially negative ones, 1. Volunteer and 2. Volunteer in a public safety or emergency service role. For a lot of communities regarding volunteer fire fighters you take anyone competent and determined or you hire full time professionals and raise taxes. On the worst day of your life would you honestly turn away the help these people, or rather stand in the street and watch things go up in flames alone, knowing nobody is coming, with no help and no hope to maybe save a loved one or your property.

As a Volunteer Firefighter & Medic (30 YEARS and still active) I have trained with a total of forty three volunteer and FULL TIME CAREER female firefighters most are officers. ONLY ONE was capable of dragging me (6 ft 5in 250 lbs lean and muscular) in l Class B's NO AIR-PACK only 10 feet on a flat floor. In my early 50's I can drag a 250-300 pound person in full gear and pack FIFTY FEET by myself. I will watch a house burn to the foundation because I refuse to go interior with a female firefighter. No thank you I value my life and I refuse to delete myself.

I can carry twice my weight for a 30-50 meters on rough terrain without take a break, Anatoly can lift 290 kilos while his weight is a bit higher than mine he is 78Kg but both cases have testicles. Im 65Kg btw. I can also carry on my shoulders a person of the same weight on my shoulders for 500 meters without stop on a mountain terrain, ive done that while on bad form. But again, i have testicles.

I have a friend who just retired from the fire service. He told me that they had a woman in their team who was a complete liability. She wasn't tall enough to reach equipment, she couldn't lift or pull certain equipment, she was twice as slow as the men, she couldn't lift or carry men and she wasn't strong enough to use the powerful hose up a ladder. All she did was follow the men, pass things she could lift, shout advise to members of the public and walk around looking like an equal member of the team. that's diversity for you. People say hope it isnt a woman that comes to rescue you. Don't worry, it wont be. They all know the score including the women and it'll always be a male who is sent in. The females stay on the ground doing bugger all.

Until your house on fire and the firefighters lady can't pick you up or knock your door down... also another interesting thing... the physical test for women is far easier than the one for males. Remember this they carry gear that is usually already 60lbs heavy... if you need to be carried out of a burning building that lady has to have strength to break into your house, break the door, carry you along with all her gear out of the burning house... or building... sorry but there is a reason why some jobs should remain male oriented. Specially in terms of life and death. Just like in Chicago two female cops ran away from a driveby... they didn't even report it. They drove off. Men are more likely to take risk and go for it... women tend to freeze up or fail in making life and death choices.

I feel sorry for that community one or 2 women on a fire department suck I can only imagine a entire fire department with nothing but women on it and how do I know? I'm a 100 percent disabled retired fireman I served on the fire service from 2004 to 2014 and I retired at the rank of lieutenant

The communities that have women on fire departments or all woman fire departments like this are communities at most risk I'm a 100 percent disabled retired fireman and urban search and rescuer and women can't handle the job all they do is stand around and talk and get in the way of us able bodied men
