Thank god someone mentioned this, unpretty rapstar is such a problematic show right from the name. I will always root for women, I will always support and give women a chance, because the world is way harsher and critical of women in every space, it's tiring.

"Men are gatekeeping the scene, fancying themselves as experts to a genre they themselves are outsiders to." This right here!! It really bothers me that in 9? seasons of SMTH, 4 of HSR, and other hip hop competitions there has yet to be any female judges. I remember on HSR 3 a judge said to Lee Young-ji that she reminded him of Biggie because of her husky/low voice. And it was like the whole panel was kind of snickering over that. I'm like no her tone/flow reminds me of a Queen Latifah/MC Lyte/Lil Kim, like why Biggie? I thought that was so ignorant. Like when you have these women on these shows, theres noone to truly give any constructive feedback for them to improve, which is the point of the show in reality. I wish Tasha would be a judge on SMTH at least once but I understand why not. And I think its very interesting that Tasha, who is half black is considered the standard even at 40. Like you really set the bar Sis! I'm not Korean but lived there for almost 6 years and my Korean female friends have shared with me about lack of opportunities they have in their careers and even families and when I ask them if they feel if it has gotten any better from a generation ago/their mother's time they have all replied no.

She reminded him of Biggie cus he's prolly the most known rapper with this type of flow and tone. And yes she also sounds like Queen Latifah/MC Lyte/Lil Kim, but they arent as popular so it could've create a confision. Compliment is a compliment, comparing someones flow/tone to one of the greatest rappers is just nice, not ignorant

Great video. I also felt that hip hop wasn’t friendly towards women. It doesn’t matter weather it’s American or Korean scene but it’s worse in Korea because of their culture. Korea has long way to go.... I am Korean American.

2:20 i dont think its a good example tho to you attached those videos and call them 'they value women by their appearance' you don't know the exact reason why the first woman was failed but the next woman was accepted... :( also they both got different judges so you cant call it that way.. that Is just my opinion, im so thankful that you made this video to talk about women in khhrnb scene

The clip is more to illustrate the image of a woman failing, it's not that she failed because of her appearance in that specific moment.

How can these women rappers get credit or respect when most of them do not write their own lyrics. That is a total disrespect to the US Black Rappers who write their own lyrics and have to fight to get their music heard.

Don't get me wrong, I think misogyny is one area korean media and culture can improve. But I do feel like your arguments are rather limited and somewhat exaggerated: - SMTM and Unpretty Rapstar are TV shows, and I don't think they should be used as primary evidence for or against KHH. In this context, what the video states as 'male rappers gatekeeping' is just Mnet gatekeeping against female artists. - The only actual instance of gatekeeping against females was Outsider's attempt to mass market E.Via with a over sexualized concept, the sexual harassment cases against Rimi and KittiB, and the controversy around Sleeq. All but the last of these instances were, if anything, internally criticized very heavily by the early 2010s and is not representative of the entire scene. Sleeq's instance is a little different in which she openly showed support for a controversial extremist/misandrist group and before those series of events, she had fans across the scene regardless of gender. - Instances of fans objectifying female artists do exist (Jvcki Wai, Rimi, Yuzion, Bryn, etc) but due to the way fandom cultures work in Korea, this is also very common the other way around as well (fans objectifying male artists - rappers like Jay Park, Simon D or kpop idol musicians in general). - If you look at the careers of the judges and mentors on UPRS, it's difficult to find a female artist who fits that bill. Tymee has a weak discography (that includes her stuff as E.Via and Nepper) and GiantPink didn't have one. - That being said I do agree with the overall sentiment on UPRS and don't agree with the Mnet producers. However it's difficult to argue SMTM is unfairly biased against gender. Rappers like Yuk Jidam and Ash B dominated UPRS because the overall skill level of the performers on UPRS were rather lackluster. And in fact Yuk Jidam made it quite far for having no experience in SMTM3. - People didn't compare new female artists to Yoon Mirae because she was the only notable female rapper. People criticized Nepper/Tymee and Truedy for sounding like Yoon Mirae because frankly she did. People didn't 'belittle' Rimi, Jvkci Wai, or Jeon Soyeon as a Yoon Mirae copycat because they just didn't sound like her. Overall the video makes some bold statements, but with weak evidence to back them up. The quotes are missing sources, visual examples are misleading (Swervy vs Kerrigan May), the video harps on Mnet shows to overgeneralize the entire culture, and Alice's understanding of KHH feels rather surface level or limited to that of a general public perspective. That being said, as mentioned, now is the time for female artists to shine and we are moving positively. The ratio is shifting and awareness among fans are improving every year. Obviously we can't expect change to happen over night but we're getting there, slowly but surely.

All their statements are true, they just didn’t go into detail enough.
