Women’s inclusion in peace and security matters and the potential positive impact of their involvement continues to be on the margins of public policy of mainstream peace and security issues. Where women have been involved in peace discussions across the world, research demonstrates that it is more sustainable. Yet women and girls continue to be a target in armed conflict bearing a higher toll and are often left to pick up the pieces in communities after conflict.
This #criticalthinkinglive focuses on these issues and wider in conversation with Jacqueline O’Neil, Canada’s first WPS Ambassador, will also feature Naomi Izabela, President of the Youth Council in Antwerp, a Youth Ambassador at Plan International Belgium, law student, and face of Canada’s #SheLeadsHere campaign aimed at bringing young female leaders to the table and to meet decision makers and key stakeholders. Canada is the global leader in championing gender equality, empowerment of women and girls in conflict-affected areas and promoting more inclusive and gender-sensitive peacebuilding processes.
This edition will provide an opportunity to reflect on the implementation of Canada’s WPS National Action Plan and the country’s Feminist Foreign Policy framework in the light of the war in Ukraine, mobilization for women’s rights in Iran sparked by the murder of Mahsa Amini in police custody and increasing use of sexual and gender-based violence as a weapon of war.
The interview will also touch upon different ways how multilateral security institutions and processes can be re-modelled to produce more gender-sensitive solutions that are responsive to the different needs and risks that women and girls are facing.
