Re-live the qualifications stages of the women's artistic gymnastics subdivision 1 event at the North Greenwich Arena as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (29 July).
Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as "artistic", such as climbing and acrobatics.
The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

I loved Kristyna Palesova's routine, ( 33:30 ) Because she actually dances and shows that this really is ARTISTIC gymnastics, and that it is MORE than just flips and jumps.

I think Elvire Teza is her name, she was an innovative gymnast from France in the 90s and early 2000s, and she performed a split leap with her head tilted back perpendicular to the beam. She also did another cool move, where she flipped backwards with a full twist, perpendicular to the beam and circled around.

I just watched some videos from Nanjing YOG 2014 and Brazil's team is entirely renewed. I was gobsmacked with a tiny cutie 14 years old, Flavia Saraiva, hungry for medals, and so did she amazingly well and with lots of charisma. I am sure she will shine in Rio 2016.

She definitely is. But she essentially does the same floor routine with slightly different elements depending on the code at that time and similar salsa music each year.

I really wish they had shown more of Annikka Urvikko, although I'm glad they at least showed her vault. I would have loved to see her floor though since that's probably her best event. I'm just so happy that a Finnish gymnast finally made the Olympics again! :)

Isn't Daiane Dos Santos the gymnast how could perform a split leap perpendicular to the balance beam? I've never seen anyone else do that before or since but I'm not sure if that was her. It looked impossibly difficult.

American Girl Gymnast It's another 4 years of hard graft and maybe she just didn't want to keep going. Maybe she was tired of the routine training and the pain and discomfort gymnasts suffer every day. And she has been to more than just this Olympic games so she has had the experience of it all already.

She probably wouldn't have been able to hold on its a whole four years a lot of time in gymnastics, tons of injuries not to mention the up and coming gymnasts at the time, she probably just thought it was time for her to say goodbye to the sport.
