I don’t mind fake pockets in places where you can’t really use it anyway - like some styles call for a breast pocket for the standard ‘look’ of the style, but if you have boobs (Eta: I meant this to say big boobs - smaller boobs depending on the cut of the garment it can work but as they get larger there’s just geometry issues involved) you can’t USE said pockets because as soon as you put something in them it just pokes out weirdly and isn’t functional. But there should be useful pockets in places where they will work with the shape of the body.

I chose to research women's pockets throughout history, which my lecturer said was one of the weirdest topics she's had over the years. Part of the assignment was that I had to have two of my classmates review my work and manage to get two of the four men in a class of thirty. The younger one said he could feel my rage in the paper (and it went through many MANY edits to tone it down!) and the older one was discussing my paper with his wife who enthusiastically agreed. Both had no clue that it was an issue and were horrified that something that was such an inconsequential part of their life had such an impact on how women function on a day-to-day basis. But unfortunately, regular side seam pockets will also not do, as they are very difficult to access, with the sides of my wheelchair in the way. But thankfully, I have discovered that if I tie my pockets slightly to the front, I can then access them while in my chair. @@tonapittman Apparel Technology student here with the answer! It is done to keep the pocket or garment from being pulled out of shape while it is in transit and on display. Additionally, some pocket sewing methods actually require you to baste the pocket shut in order to ensure that everything is correctly aligned while you complete the pocket, and in mass-produced clothing, where cost is considered above all else, it doesn't really make sense to have a stitcher waste their time removing basting stitches when the consumer can do it. Not a very good answer, honestly, but there are reasons even if they are somewhat absurd.
@nicelliott11753 жыл бұрын
If you sew at all, I recommend adding extensions to your pockets if they are of an inadequate size. This does work much better on back pockets, since the front ones are most often sewn into the side seams, but I have found it to be a good way to make otherwise satisfactory garments into ones that are functional as well. Men's pants are also a good option depending on your style preferences, and wearing a belt and/or putting in a few darts can make the fit significantly better.

I remember being extremely angry after I purchased a pair of paints with what I assumed were sewn shut pockets, then got home, and discovered that not only were the seams permanently sewn shut (not just basted), but there was a piece of FAKE POCKET FABRIC hanging like a half finished flap that I had felt on the inside of the pants. You know what, Marie Kondo just appeared over my shoulder and told me I should probably give them away if I don't need them any more (working from home forever now) and they don't make me happy. Okay, that pipe in the pocket reminded me of a family anecdote about one of my great great aunts (I think I have the right number of greats there, but I'm not sure - the story comes from the early 1930s). She liked to smoke with a pipe and she was something of a chain smoker (by today's standards). One day, she was outside smoking when friends came to call. As it was unseemly for women to smoke with pipes, she hid her pipe in her apron pocket when she saw them coming. A few minutes later, her apron started smoking - the pipe had set it on fire. Needless to say, she was very embarrassed to have set herself on fire, but she did manage to conceal exactly what had set her apron alight from her guests. Her husband thought it was the most hilarious thing he'd ever heard when she told him about it later - which is how the story got passed down.
