Size, strength, adrenaline, and the element of surprise are all variables which can negate skill in a real self defense situation. In order for a woman (or anyone) to know whether she will be able to successfully perform self defense techniques on a larger, stronger, and adrenalized aggressor who will attack her by surprise, she will need to practice them on a sparring partner who fits that description. Two women facing off and fighting each other is not a real world self defense scenario. A woman being grabbed from behind, in poorly lit conditions, by a 200 lb. man who is three times stronger than she, being thrown to the ground and pounced upon is a real life self defense situation. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a great martial art; the issue is for each individual woman to pressure test her own individual skill, strength, stamina, and reaction to a realistic violent street assault by a physically superior and ruthless opponent.
@alimahdavi22764 жыл бұрын
Well at Gracie academy they have a special exclusive program in which they have five men attack you every other night on the way home😂😂😂
@nikolaslavov34984 жыл бұрын
Yeah true. But it is all they can do since you can't simulate ACTUAL street scenario safely.
@marca.80814 жыл бұрын
@@nikolaslavov3498 I would agree and disagree. No gym can fully replicate a vicious street assault, but every self defense gym must try to come as close to one as is safe to do. Female students must be placed among male instructors, some of whom ask them the time of day and walk away and some who ask and suddenly attack them. Protective gear is available to allow harder striking, which needs to be experienced in training. Surprise, fear, pressure, and pain need to be experienced in order to truly prepare anyone for a real street attack. Practicing with a training partner who applies none of these elements is physical exercise, not street self defense.
@nikolaslavov34984 жыл бұрын
Yes I know. Problem is this way training becomes intimidating and not even a third of the girls in the video would be willing to do it. This is business as well, the Gracies wanna make as much $$$ as they can. Also with these emotions there's more chance of accidents and injuries. But yes, you're 100% right. Almost none of these girls seem prepared for actual assault.
@marca.80814 жыл бұрын
@@nikolaslavov3498 I agree, but they can start them slowly and work their way up. You are absolutely right that from the beginning, if they beat people up in class, many would not come back. However, if they started with some easy technique training and increased the intensity gradually, explaining the necessity of doing so, I think their students would understand. Ever since I watched the Guided Chaos (guidedchaos.com) training by John Perkins, author of "Attack proof," it changed the way I view self defense training. BJJ training is a great idea, but it needs to include the principles taught in Guided Chaos in order to be more street ready. As Bruce Lee said, every martial system has a piece of truth to it, so one should learn from many and create a well rounded self defence system. An equalizer, such as The unbreakable umbrella (unbreakableumbrella.com) is a good idea, too. This umbrella is a street legal self defense tool which can be carried anywhere. It is a real umbrella but built much stronger so that it can be used to defend oneself if needed. It is nice to speak with you. Please stay safe and healthy; my best wishes to you and your family.

You are right but in a real fight there is striking. Plus it might have bites, finger in the eye grab genitals etc. So you might not be able to hold a stance properly as taught. And it's a totally different situation. For exemple you can't be too close or you'll be bite or take a headbutt. In side control, you can't leave an arm free cause it will go for genitals. So i think its safe to say that if you only do bjj you lack of 2 very important skills : foul fight skills and striking offence and defense. Their program is quite good from that perspective : bjj (armbar 3:56), some krav maga stuff (2:36) and some striking (1:08) but in my humble opinion 2:56 is complete bullsh*t armbar or kimura to neutralize an armed guy on the ground is complete nonsense you'd better learn how to get up as fast as possible (muay boran/self defense style) the proper way and just run instead of fighting a knife on the ground.
@lopa-u9f5 ай бұрын
@@misterh4184 yeah, I think it needs to come from a mentality of being supplemental, not primary or foundational (though there is some fundamentals to being able to wrestle grapple well, but it too needs to be treated as simply a part of a toolbelt behind a mentality of 'no' with an understanding of the real potentials out there) a lot of 'techniques' simply increase violent potentiality from the attacker rather than are effecive neutralizer, meaning making him fight harder or use more brutal methods to subdue you (whereas at first maybe he was just holding your wrists, but now he's punching you in the head to get you unconscious) guuns, knives, pepper spray are the first physical tools, supported by a confidence courage no-cowardice mentality

Interesting to see this take on Jiu Jitsu. Every male Jiu Jitsu practitioner I’ve heard or talked with has told me directly that Jiu Jitsu is not ideal for women’s self defense because it is a ground fighting technique and once on the ground a woman has already lost the fight. Contrarily, this instructor’s POV is the opposite. She argues that it will be going to the ground, so that’s where you should learn to fight. I am glad to have heard this perspective from a woman’s POV as I try to help my daughter choose the most effective MA for herself. The instructor talks about the use of joint locks. I’d be interested in hearing a woman’s opinion on practicality of joint locks in real life self defense situations. Many men won’t use joint locks in true combat unless their opponent is physically weaker because the natural reactionary strength of the body to protect against joint lock damage is much greater than intentionally applied strength.

Obviously, some dresses will be better than others. But if it passes the squat test, you should be fine.

@@RochelleHasTooManyHobbies the problem is not the dress, the problem is all these techniques might not work in real life 😂

Girls should be physically strong along with learning self defense. Women should do exercises which increase muscle power

What if you have back issues? I trialled BJJ; and severely hurt my back. Should I try again? I recommend TKD as well

I'm 5'6'' and like 150lbs and am mostly embarrassed to admit all mma stuff is like worthless to me cause I don't feel effective in any training for guys or guys my size

Nice defences, some of them great. But I do have a question, I am NOT a hater, but I am curious. How long from walking through the door, to being able to do these techniques to an effective level? I know the course states 10 hours, but are they effective after this time?

This is great stuff. I’ve taught self defense for over 20 years. Why do you teach a big looping swing for the palm strike? It’s so easily blocked. A jab, cross, or tight hook with a palm is more direct and harder to deal with. They can be delivered to the front or side of the face. What am I missing? (Genuinely 6:35 curious). Thank you.

Everyone needs some form of good self defense training as anyone can become a victim of violent crime.
