LET'S HELP THE SURVIVOR: If anyone has any contact with the woman who survived this assault, please notify Gracie University Headquarters (e-mail info@gracieuniversity.com). We would like to sponsor her to come to California to receive a full week of personal training with Eve and Rener at Gracie University Headquarters.
At 7:30pm on Wednesday, November 25, a woman who was jogging in East River Park near Jackson Avenue when a man accosted and dragged her by the hair into a nearby amphitheater.
Once there, he sexually assaulted her, stole her cell phone and credit cards, and took off on a bicycle. If you have any information about the suspect's whereabouts, please contact NYPD immediately.
In this special edition Gracie Breakdown, Eve and Rener Gracie discuss the incident, specifically how the hair-grab can be so challenging and debilitating during an assault. They also discuss how, with some principle-driven jiu-jitsu training, a woman can not only minimize the assailants effectiveness, but turn the tables and use the attacker's own grip to incapacitate him with a joint lock or a chokehold.

I'm a man, when I retired from the Army I grew out my hair. A big guy attacked me in a bar and I took him down and ended in the mount position. He immediately grab me by the hair. I was in shock, I had short hair for 26 years. It took a moment to gather myself. I ended up jamming fingers in his eyes and then ground and pounded him. Needless to say I wish I knew these skills back then. Back to short hair and Gracie Jijitsu.

I love that he's a tall muscular guy showing these moves so you can really see how effective it'll be no matter who your attacker is for the most part. I also love that they show how to break your attacker's arm but I worry about what if you break their arm and can't prove that it was in self defense because they weren't able to sexually assault you?
@cyncin1163

Don't worry about that, as long as you are alive. They will check your history of violence and the attackers, it would be an incredibly dumb judge to think a woman can just approach a man and break his arm just for fun. A lady in Australia was raped and murdered, the guy had over 50 rapes against his name... not sure if they let him out again but there is generally a history....

Trust me, break their fucking arm. Do as much damage as possible. Then go to the police and report everything. As a woman who experienced brutal assault by a rapist, and has had many other female friends assaulted, raped, bashed, attempted murdered and one murdered, I'm telling you, DO AS MUCH DAMAGE AS YOU CAN. MAKE THE ATTACKER NEVER ATTACK AGAIN. Because if they think they can get away with it, they will absolutely try it again with another woman.
@MrCmon113
@MrCmon113 3 жыл бұрын
He lets her do that. It wouldn't work nearly as well if he resisted. Fighting a guy twice your weight is pretty much hopeless. A small guy can control both of your arms with one of his and get your grip off his body whenever he wants. A large guy can simply stand up with you on top of him and throw you across the room. BJJ is legit, but it doesn't allow you to beat someone way larger.

@@MrCmon113 I mean, idk. I'm sure we've all seen the video of the woman submitting the army dude in fatigues. I think that a well-trained female could defend herself against an untrained male assailant fairly well. But idk. I guess it depends. And you have to keep in mind as far as I can tell, most of these sexual predators are cowards and not trained fighters or something.

The bit you missed out when she grabs the arm and the guy's head, is that by controlling the gripping hand and at the same time grabbing behind the guy's head means she now has extra leverage by controlling his neck and therefore increases the opportunity to over balance the attacker. Essentially reversing the control the man had over her when he grabbed her air. Anyway, just a thought/observation.

I was thinking the same thing! There’s no one way to respond in the situation but the ground is my last resort. I would first put him on the ground. His instinct would be to release the hair to break his fall, then he is at your mercy or you get a head start on escape. I had an experience where I had to use my skills and I can tell you he stopped right away once he saw he didn’t have control. Game over and I didn’t even have to hurt him. 💪

I had been assaulted by men many times and I had into mixed martial arts. In real cases, I forgot all those techniques. Moreover when I was shocked and my only thought was survival. I had only wanted to escape and free. Thus it became free-style-whatever. But knowing all of this is not a waste. It can build your confidence and persistence. So I think unless you learn into it until you become an expert and the moves become the second nature of you, it will be relatively same in real case. But I don't want to discourage you. Perhaps it is just me. But keep knowing/learning. You never knew when it will be needed. Even your own family can really hurt you so be prepared anytime

Because when she goes to school or anywhere people from grade school middle school high school where ever have no respect and are predatorial and bullies. I want her to use this as defending herself last resort if ever needed. I want her to know and have this in her arsenal same for myself. Growing up my father also wanted me to know how to defend myself so he tried teaching me how to box but my mother was one who sort of frowned upon it I did learn something but not much because of this. I was beaten badly when I was 16. I'm 35 now. I was poor and only had the library. It was enough. I taught myself, which I know is frowned upon by all martial arts, self defense. Everything I do I've use in real fights. People tend to pick on me because I'm nice. Just want to throw out here that I actually promote walking and even running, however if I am threatened or I feel my life is in danger I will not hesitate to neutralize that situation. Anyhow, JKD was the most effective or what people call mma. Names really don't matter to me. If it can save my life, I will use, but only if it's not fake in nature. Bjj, boxing, and a lot of drills and traps for jkd, silat hand to knife. These are the most effective. I became confident and I don't have trauma anymore. I did however become puzzled and have been looking for a way to show my niece how to defend herself from a bully because she was a victim of it a year or so ago. I could not for the life of me think of a proper way. This video will definitely show her how. So, thank you guys.

These are so good to know, and for anyone, really. It raises your chances a lot. What raises them even higher is knowing these while having an EDC (everyday carry). For some, that's a stun gun. For others it's a knife and pepper spray. In my humble opinion, the best is a semiauto pistol, pepper spray, and a knife. If someone is threatening your life and is aggressively approaching you, you use that pistol, and you use it with purpose. If someone hit you, kicked you, or is otherwise trying to hurt you from a small distance, whip that pepper spray out and spray them in the face. if you're grapping with someone, use these techniques. If, for some reason, your attacker is extremely skilled at grappling and you cannot utilize these techniques to get them off of you, draw the knife and go for arteries. It'll be a horrible experience, and you're going to get covered in blood, but the alternatives are much worse. Only use deadly force when you fear for your life. Only use deadly force if your life is directly on the line. Never use deadly force when there's only an altercation, or otherwise you are in danger of being hurt or injured but your life is not on the line. It's hard to know, sometimes. The most important thing to do is to not panic. Situational awareness is your best tool for survival. Also, learn grappling like what's in the video. Get good at it.

So you will be able to call for and get help. Keep the phone number of a taxi service and have enough money to be taken home.

Back in the 80’s when aI was married, my husband and I had some kind of disagreement that had quickly escalated to the point that he grabbed a hand full of my hair on my right side. He then began dragging me from the kitchen through the living room to our bedroom and the closet. The only thoughts I had were ,” Why is he doing this to me?”; “ What’s he going to do next?” , “ How do I get away?”. I remembered that my dad once said that he would not always be there to protect me and to remember that in some situations it’s “ kill or be killed” so I must decide what I was going to do. I had a little bit of training in the martial arts, so, while I was laying on the floor of the closet, he was standing over me and still holding my hair while all of those thoughts were in my mind I suddenly saw an opening for me to free myself from his grip . I was wearing shoes that were made of wood and immediately lifted my left leg towards my chin and thrusted my foot forward to hit him squarely in his crotch and I had meant it to hurt him as he was hurting me. He immediately let me go and got away from me, holding himself .

These are fun to practice, but very difficult to do in real life because of complexity. Best to keep strategies really really simple simple. I know it is easy to say, but not easy to do but: at all costs try not to go to the ground. Kick, scratch, bite, scream; whatever it takes, but do your very best to not go to the ground. Of course, if you do end up on the ground, you will need ground strategies, but above all, do not let yourself be taken to the ground.
@JohnJohnson-pq4qz
@JohnJohnson-pq4qz Жыл бұрын
What a lot of baseless assertions based on zero evidence. "going to the ground" is simply a tactical choice, or in many real life encounters not optional. As Renner pointed out , being taken to a secondary crime scene is statistically (that means real life evidence) one of the most dangerous things that can happen. One of the best tactics to prevent that is to sit to the ground. Of course this should be accompanied by a lot of good training, but even a completely untrained person could lay on their back and kick at the attacker,who is trying to take them somewhere-which is a very sound and proven tactic. This is a very instinctive thing ( we see it even in real life footage such as in the assassination attempt on Imelda Marcos-by a knife wielding attacker). Arm locking someone is not very complex and is a gross motor technquire proven again and again, in MMA matches and real fights- does it take practice? Of course, just like driving a car or shooting a gun, its a real world skill but much simpler than driving a car...something most of us do competently and without much thought.. Unlike the same old hooey about biting, scratching etc...we were all "taught " this hooey in the 70s and 80s...and the rate of sexual assaults skyrocketed. how do you practice 'eye gouging" in any way that actually develops a testable , measurable skill? If it were so "simple" and effective why do we not see it working over and over again in real life video? please show us at least one example (ie evidence) of a woman escaping a sexual assault by biting and scratching? There must be some but the evidence is very scarce which is odd if its so simple and effective. Please have some facts and evidence before spouting unproven hooey.

@@JohnJohnson-pq4qzWhat I'm picking up is keeping & maintaining control of that arm that's grabbing you and staying close to the attacker so their punches won't land as hard & lessens the pain from their hair grip and try to get them on the ground ASAP. Being mounted seems more difficult to get out of though, but if you have more power & freedom with the attacker between your legs (which is where their body will end up when trying to SA you) so if they're between your legs then I'm guessing attempt those moves, but if you can't then use your legs every possible way you can to injure the attacker as long as you keep their grip arm locked and head close to them. I'm tall and have long legs so idk if that's to my advantage or disadvantage. I really don't want to find out, but ya kinda need to so I'd have to take the risk and find a male friend who would be willing to do a real life simulation of an attack and is ok with him hurting me and me hurting him. Lawyers would have to be involved 😂.

@@JohnJohnson-pq4qzBiting and scratching NOW is a good way to to get DNA under your fingernails and hopefully leave marks if you can scratch and bite hard enough to leave a deep physical injury that actually draws blood bc "touch" DNA is better than nothing, but doesn't beat actual blood when testing DNA.

At 8:23.. add a knee to the groin to make everything easier. Also she can bite the ear or the side of the neck. The right arm thats behind the attackers head can be used to slam his nose into your shoulder then turn counterclockwise for the takedown into mount position.. (in my style we call it fighting with poison. Subtle or smaller ways to inflict damage which makes the larger more damaging attacks easier to do)

This is the beauty of having many different styles of Martial Arts. As much as I love BJJ and have been training at it in some form for a couple of decades, when it comes to defending against hair grabs, there are some serious bone breaking shit in Hapkido that seem far more effective than going to the ground. No knock on BJJ as it is still my favorite Martial Arts.

As a repeated sexual assault victim, I desire to learn how to self defend myself. However, when I go to dojos to learn, it is retriggering to have a man on top of me or me on top of a man. These classes rarely have women in them. I remember inwas the only female, and they wanted me to learn how to fight a man so it felt like I was being "passed around" with different men on top of me and in my groin. It was extremely triggering. I tried to memorize these techniques on YT, but it is nowhere the same without practice. I would love it if there were more classes available for cheap that only allow females.

And for normal non grappling trained…. She doesn’t stand a chance with that “hip” move …. Ladies in that position pull your legs up and in while forcing him more over your face, kneeing him in the ass and up lick your tossing him with your knees then immediately pull your arms into your body and then unleash scratching their face to hell, don’t punch or slap just scratch like hell!!! All this is within no more than 8 seconds….As you scratch he will attempt to block or elbow…as soon as he does then throw hips, knee and arm pushing him to one side!!! Then roll opposite and run!!!!!!! The more you scratch his face the more disoriented he will be and the better chance you have of running away and at worst you at least leave him scars and keep his dna under your nails!!!!
