That statement needs to be fact-checked. This seems like something only a not-good/wasteful emperor would allow. If anyone knows Wu Zetian, even she made a statement in her lifetime that she'd be frugal in the fabric used in her attire, to set a good example for other women in court to follow. It's widely known many good emperors/state officials tried to be frugal to set a good example in other ppl's eyes. In some dynasties, those in power (not central power but at provincal/smaller levels) were even fairly poor, because the gov paid them so little. For some of them, being frugal was their way of holding themselves accountable for who they are, but ofc there are those rly not-so-good ppl in power too. Again, that's not the whole picture, the way the video explains it is kind of misleading in the least. Many ppl knew some officials were corrupt and a lot of them left a bad name in history.

Not only was the hanfu only worn by nobles but the material in which it was made (eg silk) was very expensive. Not to forget that unlike now, they didn't have machines and most of those clothes were embroidered and sewn by hand. @moondust2365
@moondust2365 4 ай бұрын
Tbf, more people _are_ starting to wear them. Some in everyday life, others in certain occasions. But, if you watched the video, you'd realize that some of them wouldn't have ever worn these kinds of Hanfu back in the day, since long elaborate Hanfu was exclusive for Chinese nobles. Regular people would've still worn Hanfu of sorts, but with shorter sleeves and hems, and much simpler designs, not just because they couldn't afford to buy and maintain more elaborate clothes, but because simpler clothes are more practical for manual labor and farming. In modern society, however, especially with newer methods of making and dyeing cloth, along with the convenience of washing machines, dryers, electric irons, and sewing machines, even non-noble Chinese can afford more elaborate Hanfu nowadays.
@aureliaavalon
@aureliaavalon 4 ай бұрын
@@AllecYoon A tight red one would be called a Cheongsam, which is beautiful clothing too. Maybe you should wear a hanfu if you want, no need to fret when you can always wear it yourself. Also, the Chinese are very much proud of their hanfu, the evidence is the COUNTLESS historical costume Chinese dramas that they have.

It was the same in Europe. There were laws in place so that only certain classes of people could where certain things. So that people could instantly recognize a persons "place" just by looking at them. It also forced nobles to buy expensive clothes for court so they had less money for things like a private army.

It depends on which era, some only had a normal selection of clothing that they cycled through. While other times, it was forced upon them to have something new to wear. I've also heard that they would use the fabric of previous designs to make it into the new trendy fashion statement. They're saying that they would use them as a robe too.

kimono (in now Japanese language)= ancient Chinese dress in ancient Japan (The Chinese emperor named ancient Japan as "東瀛 dong ying & 扶蘇 fusu & 倭wo" in history. As one of the regions of China's power jurisdiction. It is closely related to the Chinese royal family and the official). Kimono in history, it has always been called " 吳服Wu Fu" (Japanese kimono shop is also called " Wu fu Store"). " 吳服Wu Fu" means the clothes worn by ancient Chinese (a certain area in ancient China). Because foreigners do not understand Chinese characters and real Japanese history. Therefore, they will be misled by the preach of modern Japanese culture.

The statement on “throwing away garment” needs fact check. Here is a counter point, many of the (historically accurate) hanfu styles are designed with detachable parts, such as the detachable hu-ling 护领 (protective collars) on the robes from Song-Ming periods to prevent sweat stains. Throughout history, some robes also have an extra panel/piece at the cuffs or hemline, which can also be replaced. The only issue is you will need access to sewing and knowledge of garment making: in history this was not an issue, but today, since hanfu design became a specialty trait and require a lot of research, you pretty much need to fix it yourself. In history, many or the non-washable garments are the ones that featured heavy craftsmanship, which means they are very expensive and time-consuming to be made. It is very unlikely people will throw away a garment after they had spent so much money and wait several months for it to be finished.
@ah5721
@ah5721 4 ай бұрын
In the west we call restirctions like that sumptuary laws. I doubt they would throw clothes away. Fabric took forever to make and cost alot. The undersides of the long robes probably had reinforced fabric underneath that resisted wear and could be replaced. A long strip of contrasting decorative fabric could replace the worn floor dragged bits. The outfits would then be cut down for smaller family members or the worn parts cut out and the fabric sold to second hand shops. Or gifted to servants.

As I actually wear hanfu to work, there are several ways to tie up the robe and sleeves for ease of movement. Based on historical paintings, labourers and merchants did wear long robes and long skirts, and servants were the ones that wore the most elaborate outfits, as the high ranking servants functioned as a way to display family wealth & influence. However, the ancient artworks do show that both men and women actually tie up their skirts, robes, or sleeves when they are doing labouring work. Also, in modern time, many people only wear hanfu to cultural events, so they either rent it or only wear it a few times. However, there are also a lot of people like me who actually wear it on a daily basis and to work, when we buy a garment, we actually pay close attention to sizing, so the robes doesn’t fall to the ground. Sometimes I will even tweak the hanfu to adjust the length and sizing with my sewing machine.m

Not to mention only nobles can afford dyed textiles before.. so that makes long colored robes a status symbol
@sophiejones3554
@sophiejones3554 2 ай бұрын
Not exactly. There were expensive dyes and inexpensive dyes, and how much of the dye was used also changed the price. One would need to be extremely poor indeed to not have any dyed clothing. Most people would have at least dyed their outer clothes. Lighter colors were less expensive, hence their use for children's clothing. No use spending more money than you need to on clothes a child will grow out of. In terms of dying clothes, the Chinese actually had it good: the fabrics they had the most easy access to took dyes much better than what Europeans at the same time were wearing. Wool is great, but it repels liquid: which is a problem when you want to dye it using a liquid. Cotton famously absorbs liquid very readily. This means it takes less work to make dark colored cotton than to make dark colored wool. Also, indigo was far more readily available in ancient China than in Europe. Even today, people prefer indigo dyed cotton for workwear pretty much everywhere in the world: that's what jeans are made of. Why indigo? It's not light-sensitive, unlike most traditional dyes. So it doesn't fade for turn brown if you wear it a lot.

China had many renaissance in the past. The last was Ming dynasty reviving the Tang/Song period after destroying the Yuan dynasty. So renaissance in China is not unusual. Don't get envious over Hanfu.

You mean "Han" history. Hanfu was banned during the Qing dynasty when the Manchus invaded and took over, and they were forced to wear Manchurian clothing. At the end of Qing dynasty, western clothing was used as a symbol of rebellion and reform, and qipao was invented.

@@user-tp7ne1du1n The Ming dynasty destroyed the Yuan and revived the Song/Tang customs. The renaissance period of Ming empire. The Manchus were overthrown in 1911 and all part of Manchuria is now Chinese. Now a stable and richer China is experiencing renaissance period again. Maybe the neighboring countries are not happy about it ?

事实上你看到大部分现代汉服都是融入很多传统元素的改良版本,真正传统汉服很少如视频里面华丽。中国并不只有汉服还有很多中国少数名族的传统服饰十分精美。

In europe, they would attach (with buttons or long stitches) rectangles of fabric on the inside of the hem (the part that is dragged on the floor). So they would detach it to wash only that extra fabric.

thrown away after wearing once? What the hella are you talking about dude. a hanfu wore by high ranking nobles would cost a fortune and a lot of effort to make, to meet the standards. We are talking about money that would be enough to feed a commoner family for years. Back in the days, getting a new robe made and delivered was something worth celebrating because it could take months to make. Even the emperor would not afford to throw away clothing like that.

I love wearing hanfu sometimes and yeah sometimes the dragging is an issue but modern ones most of the time are made from easy to clean fabrics so a bit of scrubbing with soap and a clothing brush and then on it goes into the washing machine

It's highly doubtful that they threw away their clothes after just one wear. Clothes back then took a long time to produce. It could take weeks, or even months for several seamstresses to produce a garment, depending on how complex it was. Especially if it was very intricate and with lots of details like embroidery. Remember , they didn't have sewing machines. They had to literally do everything by hand. Not to mention how much effort it takes to produce silk even nowadays. I would honestly be interested in your sources on that

Love your channel!! Just a quick note on pronunciation: "wear" is pronounced exactly as "were", i.e.with an "eh" sound, not an "ee" sound. Keep up with the excellent work!!!

Wear and were are not pronounced the same. First is pronounced like Ware and the second is pronounced like Whir.

@@zarasbazaar there's a subtle vowel difference between both, yes. However, pronouncing wear as "weer" is super duper ultra incorrect.You're not making this fine fella any favors by making a point about a distinction he won't be able to notice (much less emulate) until he's far more advanced in his English skills.

Man, I can tolerate (somewhat) all the rules, but the fact they could just throw a good clothing away annoyed me. Also, many societies have strict clothing rules, some even exist today, but I feel like we should let people choose what they want to wear

yes, its unfortunate. I think it could have also been similar to how in the west when there was a new fashion trend it was reconstructed to fit the fashionable silhouette. another thing is that thrown robes could be scrapped and turned into different items such as satchels, shoes, hats, and decor.

That's why it feels so off seeing people wear hanfu on the street nowadays. As pointed out in the video, there were dress codes based on your social status. People nowadays wearing hanfu are mostly common people, yet they dress like consorts, queens, and nobles, etc., which makes it feel costume-like. Don't even get me started on older aunties dressing in teenage-style hanfu with fancy, cute hairstyles. I believe even hairstyles were categorized based on one's age or marital status - for example, you wouldn't leave your hair down if you were married, instead you would put it into a bun.

Nothing has truly changed from back then to now.. when you have money, you can afford to wear things once and throw them away and replace it with every day trends 😂😂😂truth, though, even if I was rich I would be a tad frugal..trends today maybe outdated but things has the tendency of recycling back to its original origins ❤❤
