One of my favorite stories was he got a letter from a little girl who was blind and concerned the fish weren’t being fed. So in every episode he would talk to the fish while he fed them to assure that girl.

And both MRN & WitWiCS? (also WiTiCS?) were produced/distributed by WQED Pittsburgh (the 2 Carmen series were also distributed by WGBH Boston, although the shows were actually taped on a New York soundstage, whereas MRN was recorded directly in-house at the Pittsburgh studio, making it more grounded). Also, both Big Bird (the genuine article performed by Carrol Spinney) and Arthur (in traditional puppet form, however voiced by one of the many child actors to voice the near-sighted aardvark over these many years since the cartoon version of author Marc Brown's kid storybook characters debuted in 1996), at separate times during the 33-year production of MRN, each appeared in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, whilst both LeVar "Gordi LeForge" Burton (of _Reading Rainbow_ fame, with even an episode of that also long-running show going behind the curtain on _Star Trek: Deep Space Nine_ as an inside referential joke) & even staunch atheist _Bill Nye, The Science Guy_ also, once again during different times during the long run of MRN, appeared in episodes of the program to impart lessons on literacy & scientific study, respectively. Even Mr. Rogers' predecessor, "Captain Kangaroo" Bob Keeshan, appeared on an early 1970's episode, whilst every child's arguably first villain, The Wicked Witch of the West, in her human guise of the adorable Margaret Hamilton, appeared in a mid-1970's episode because Maggie wanted to show that she wasn't the dog-hating, child-loathing crone from the 1939 MGM movie masterpiece adaptation of OZ author Lyman Frank Baum's quintessential fairytale, wherein OZ is to America (the Plains & Midwestern states in particular, since actress Judy Garland was from Grand Rapids, MN. but her character of Dorothy Gale was inherently from Liberal, KS. prior to relocating to OZ permanently - living in The Emerald City with Princess OZma, the true royal heiress to the throne of OZ - in later books, given that OZ was REAL in the books & NOT a bump to the head dream sequence like the film had you believe) what Lewis Carrol's Wonderland, through the eyes of the character Alice as based on the real-life Alice Liddell, was to the British & Maggie's depiction of the Witch, whereby she suggests we think about her point of view on account of the fact that even so-called defacto baddies aren't just simply black & white/good vs evil, but rather, that each of us would actually be a morally ambiguous shade of gray, effectively essentially prognosticated _WICKED_ - as both a moderately successful 1995 novel (about "The Life & Times of The Wicked Witch of the West") penned by Gregory MacGuire, followed up by its even more popular ("I know about popular...") 2003 Broadway musical spin-off composed by Stephen Schwartz which, meanwhile loosely adapting the novel for the theatrical stage, spotlighted a burgeoning Idina Menzel - yes Queen Elsa from Disney's _Frozen_ that owes its very success as a modernization of _The Snow Queen_ fairytale by latchkey mooching off of the _Wicked_ template for you newbies, with ear worm "Let It Go" as that film's almost flagrantly blatant equivalent of "Defying Gravity", hence Idina lookalike super fan Erin Rementer's later created mashup of both songs, "Let It Defy Gravity" - as the titular rechristened Elphaba as a woefully misunderstood "beautifully tragic" figure that finds herself playing off of her rivalry/friendship/bisexual love interest with a bubbly Kristin Chenoweth as a future Glinda the Good initially known as the dumb blond artetypical Galinda before being thrown by the politically corrupt establishment into their forcibly established roles, as per Glinda's opening question following her arrival by bubble, "Are people born wicked or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?" - by a good few decades!

He was my favorite when I was a little kid. Because of him in my first day of Kindergarten I saw a kid sitting all by himself with his back to us. No one else was reacting to him (not even the teacher who was nice, she gave us the crayons with the sharpener in the back!) so I put my toy down and went over and sat by him and talked to him like Mr. Rogers. With empathy and care, listening, we talked and I put my arm around him. And I got him to smile and rejoin the group! He was homesick, pretty much. I saw Sesame Street, Electric Company, Zoom, 3-2-1- Contact!, Captain Kangaroo and all of them!

Fred Rogers helped kids to deal with their emotions in a healthy, positive way . People just seem to want kids to be quiet and obedient, without bothering to provide any actual guidance. Mr. Rogers was there for the kids whose parents weren't willing to put in the time, effort, and patience of truly parenting their kids, the kind who never offered anything but, " be good, or I'll smack you". We so need someone like Fred Rogers.

This was a great review, it’s strange but as a kid, I didn’t speak English fluently when Mr Rodgers was on TV. There was something universally genuine about the show that transcended language barriers for me as an immigrant. It was so different than anything else that I liked as a kid, from Transformers to G.I.Joes too. It doesn’t make sense as there wasn’t any action, but it was comforting. I didn’t know about the documentary until seeing this, but want to see it now. My Mom’s friend met him accidentally when her car broke down and he helped her out, hearing that made me happy since it confirmed that he was genuine. It looks like this documentary confirms it too. It’s also crazy to know that George Romero and Michael Keaton got their start on his show, and nice to have them dispel the rumors of his military service again, despite the fact that they shouldn’t have had to.

You know I see and hear soooo many ppl saying “there’s never gonna be another Mr Rogers” or some version of that and all I wanna say to those ppl is that is the biggest lie you can ever tell yourself and others. Why don’t you all just take a look in the mirror? Why don’t you take a look at yourself and make the decision “I wanna be the next Mr Rogers” or “I want to be someone like Mr Rogers” and start acting like it. Trust me, it’s hard, loving your neighbor is one of the hardest things to do especially when your “neighbor doesn’t love or give a fuck about you. And when Mr Rogers said “neighbor” he didn’t literally mean the people who live next door to you, he’s was talking about your fellow humans, the strangers on the street you pass by everyday. This is where the hard part comes in because this world is darkkkk, there’s murder, rape, theft, hatred, violence, depression, slavery, oppression and so many kinds of evil out there. The only way to fight it is with love, by being someone strong enough to take whatever this world can throw at you and at the end of the day being able to turn the other cheek.

If you were "raised on Public TV," do you remember Morgan Freeman as "Easy Reader"? My Mr. Rogers tale: One day, the TV was tuned to Public TV, and it was "Mr. Rogers and the dead fish." I was a "cooler than cool" high school student, "wasting time, waiting for another TV program to start on another channel." He saw that one of the fish in the aquarium was on the bottom, not moving. He wondered if the fish was sick and not dead, so he mixed up a container of salted water to see if he could revive it. The fish, however, had "left the building," so he wrapped it up in an improvised shroud and took it outside. He then dug a grave for the fish and interred it like a treasured family member. He talked about Death, and I soon forgot the program on the other TV channel and filed this in memory as "treat all living things with respect, even in Death."

Same thing with Black Panther. It was good on its own, but most of its reviews came from the fact that a black led film produced by black people with black music promoting African culture is needed, esp these racist days
@alphacause6 жыл бұрын
Brandon Layne. I agree. While Black Panther was one of my favorite films of this year, it has to be acknowledged that the praise it garnered was a bit inflated, due to a deliberate attempt by Marvel at giving a largely black ensemble cast a heroic role - something that would be previously done to only individual black characters (i.e. Blade or Spawn), but not to an ensemble cast.

Ironic cause he was considered conservative in his time.
@GO-GO_SO-SO6 жыл бұрын
youreallinsane That is kind of weird, considering that he was a pacifist and committed to racial diversity. He embraced feminist values and was a vegetarian. His programming hints at a progressive message. Also, Fox News--a very conservative news network--didn't like him and said he was ruining an entire generation. Sounds very liberal.
@shadysif62206 жыл бұрын
He was considered conservative but not in the political sense. It was based on his "wholesome", clean cut image, the way he dressed and spoke on his show. He was like the father from "Leave it to Beaver". But perception isn't reality.
@GO-GO_SO-SO6 жыл бұрын
Shadysif Yeah, definitely not in the political sense. If Conservatives heard a person say and do the kind of things he said and did, they would call that person a liberal or "libtard" especially considering he seemed to be a feminist as well. I guess that is one reason why Fox News basically attacked him at one point.
@themodernguitarist6 жыл бұрын
Only reason he'd be considered a conservative is because he was very, very religious and tried his best to be family-friendly. Otherwise his want for equality in general is more in-line with liberalism/progressiveism these days. If Mr. Roger's Neighborhood existed today, you can bet your ass a bunch of alt-righters and nazis would try their damnedest to get the show cancelled, or even Mr Rogers himself harmed in some way.

Good film to be sure, but there was not a single mention of John Costa, nor his relationship to Fred. That connection/relationship is legendary and a very worthy documentary of its own. The neighborhood would not have been the neighborhood if not for John; who played live every day, then often jammed in the evening with/as another trio. I think it possible the music world created in the neighborhood was so far advanced the cast did not fully get it much outside their own roles in the show and their own connection to Fred. Fred though did get it. It was very personal to him. Remember Fred; as a child, ran to his piano often under unpleasant circumstances. Turn that around in later years and now have Johnny Costa play you out to the same words that brought you comfort back then when things sometimes hurt. A message was/is delivered nearly every show. It's the end, the last 8 minutes. Listen as Fred closes the episode and Johnny starts flyin. Very often you can see the effect it had on Fred. One Four Three Fred Rogers and Johnny Costa.

I dont know if there is a specific moment in this movie that will make everyone cry. It just will happen and when it does, it's okay.

Mr Rogers is a humble badass, but don't forget Bob Ross!
