A full playthrough (or longplay if you will) of Wonder Boy for the Sega Master System. This video features the locations of all of the dolls, all of the warp points (although I don't use any of the warps themselves) and a few of the bonus letters.
Wonder Boy was an arcade game developed by Escape and published by Sega in 1986. Several ports to home computers and consoles followed with the Master System version easily being the best. Interestingly for a Sega game, it was released on the competing Nintendo Entertainment System, although with a different main character, music and name - Adventure Island was the name of the game on the NES. Something to do with Sega holding the rights to the characters and game's name, but not the game itself. Bizarre.
The idea of the game is to save Wonder Boy's girlfriend by making your way through various platforming landscapes, defeating end-of-level bosses, collecting fruit to maintain vitality and avoiding coming into contact with a wide variety of enemies, random fires, boulders, rocks and bees. Wonder Boy is able to defeat enemies using his axe. It's fun and playable, if a little repetitive, but a good game to fulfil your platforming needs.
It was one of the first games I owned for my Master System back in the 1980s and remains one of my favourites today. As with several of my videos, this is a playthrough of the game from start to finish. I do make use of save states, but play the game in full speed without any other tool assist methods.
The arcade game features 36 levels with a doll on each one, sometimes hidden. In this version, if each doll is collected on the first 36 levels, an extra four levels are made available.
Finally, plugging this game into a Japanese Master System turns it into Super Wonder Boy, a harder version of the same game. This is not to be confused with some computer conversions of Wonder Boy's sequel, Wonder Boy In Monster Land, which was sometimes known as Super Wonder Boy. I'm sure there's a way of unlocking the Super Wonder Boy version if played on PAL/US Master Systems.

I still find it amazing how decades after playing games, it's still possible to remember where to jump to get the random bonuses and secrets that were hidden in games. Not just in this one, but in lots of old games. We really did need to make sure we got our money's worth (or our parents' money's worth) out of games back then! In a way it proves how great the human memory is.
@wailer27

@@classicgaminguk also proves how pathetic some humans are that they are willing to remember useless information like this and waste their lives on computer games with the illusion that it's an important thing to do... don't even think about biting back at me, i'm just trying to help you see sense and improve things for all of us
@classicgaminguk
@classicgaminguk 4 жыл бұрын
Strummer1980 I’m not saying that people willingly remember this kind of useless information, my point was more about how the brain seems to store it anyway and is able to recall it decades later when something happens that triggers that memory. It’s a bit like when you hear a song you haven’t heard for years but still remember its lyrics when you hear it again. And what does it really matter to you how other people choose to enjoy their lives? I don’t particularly like wrestling, but I don’t begrudge anybody who does. Each to their own and all that. There are probably lots of things that you do that other people would find pathetic and a waste of your life, but you’re perfectly entitled to do whatever you like with your life. As am I. As is everybody else.

@classicgaminguk

@@daveruda I prefer the master system version but I think that’s mostly because it’s the version I played the most. I was introduced to the game through the arcade version and it was the reason I wanted a master system rather than the other choices - nes or Atari 7800. As it cost 10p to play it ( big money in those days!) I never got the chance to get a good go of it. Interestingly about ten years ago, I went on holiday to Spain and the hotel had a wonderboy arcade game in it; and I managed to keep playing for ages on it, up to the point I had an audience of kids watching me in awe. Either that or they were wondering when I’d get off the thing! Playing either version today, i think the master system version feels a bit more fluid than the arcade version.

After 28 years i have finally finished the game at level 9-4. But instead of it being on the SMS i played it on the Nintendo Wii and on the Nindendo 3DS :-) And the whole save thing... still really sucks especially when you accidently click on restart instead of continue.... grrrrr happened to me a couple times.... still took me 3 days to complete but... and now my kids are fighting over who gets to play it next lmao... thank goodness for 2 player.

I had this for my Game Gear. Strangely, it was called "Revenge of Drancon".

I just beat this on my for the first time with all dolls on my MiSTer, after owning this game many moons ago on my Master System. I died on the first jump on 10-2 and lost the axe. I was stuck for a long time trying to get through with only jumps, felt like an artist when I finally accomplished it. Breezed through the rest, was disappointed that the ending was basically the same.

This is pretty arcade perfect from recollection. The Master System hardware must be very close to the Sega hardware in the WBoy coin-op.

Then envy of your best friend getting NES and Mario, and your slightly poor family getting Sega and this for Christmas that year!

Depends on where about in the world you were. Here in the UK, barely anyone had a NES. It was mostly micro computers and later the Sega consoles. I don't think even the SNES did that well against the Mega Drive/Genesis here, although it was quite well regarded.

Yes you could select super wonder boy on the PAL version, I think hitting reset a few times did it. Or (and I'm serious) hitting the cartridge.

@@classicgaminguk Coal-Kids, interesting, thanks, I know that there might have been no competition, but I just realized just looking at the search results, you completed this game five minutes faster compared to the person who played ths on the World of Longplays channel, Excellent work!

40 levels I think, and with lots of the repeating it really felt like it went on forever. It's surprising how much could be packed into such a small space back then.
