As much as i love Chris Pine and his amazing eyes as all women do, i consider Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter to be the better love interest. You have to remember, Steve Travor fell in love with a demigoddess who looks like a supermodel, but Agent Carter fell for a sickly guy with no superpowers or good looks. Even in their first real conversation he talks about how he got beaten up behind every alley trying to fight off bullies and how he hasn't even talked to a beautiful woman before. She's seen him at his worst and fell in love with him while he was at his worst before he became Captain America. She might seem a bit aggressive but she was actually living and working in a man's world, in fact in military as a normal mortal woman.

Did I miss something or did you forget about Bucky as a supporting character? He was not only a Howling Commando, he was Steve's bestfriend. His impact on Steve iS immeasurable. Also, while I love WW, saying that she changed at the end but Steve remained almost the same is not really fair, since that is what makes Steve interesting in the first place; his will and moral compass being so strong, him being the best men among the others etc, that is why his stories are him making everyone better and elevating them. So him not changing is not a story-telling flaw, that is the dynamic of the character. Which makes Steve a better hero in my opinion, he is much more interesting. The message of WW is ruined in the third act anyways.

An interesting fact: dating back to ancient days, there is a story plot called the "admiration" plot, which introduces a protagonist and throws obstacles at him to overcome. Unlike the normal character arc, this plot doesn't require the hero to change their minds or develop as a person, and I think that it's no less effective as a story plot in that it grinds a character down and reveals just what kind of a person they are based on how they react to each test. Cap is a perfect example of this. In fact, each subsequent film in his trilogy turns up the heat as far as villains and moral dilemmas, which unites the entire series in a real cool way. On the other hand, Diana is actually a hybrid of that type of character and the normal one. She flips back and forth between being the character we admire and the character who we watch grow. Not that those can't be combined in a meaningful way, but I feel that the filmmakers were trying too hard to have their cake and eat it too, and it made WW confusing for me.
@thudthud54236 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Steve Rogers' steadfastness is what makes his character great. He was still a hero at heart, even when he was a short, scrawny guy. Dr. Erskine saw his potential. His character remained the same throughout the rest of the MCU right up to "Infinity War" when he told the Vision "We don't trade lives."

Captain America’s character arc takes place over three of his films concluding full circle with his line in civil war “i Can do this all day” it symbolizes him still having the same values and character that he always had but went from being someone who was a patriot to a solider who distrusted his government and shield and turns into a criminal because he truly believes it is the right thing.

Me too. I was watching this, thinking, "You (the video person) think that WW theme is more memorable?" Even if you think the WW theme is more stirring (which is up to personal taste), there's a big difference between "stirring" and "memorable." "Memorable," especially after a single listening, requires an easily-identifiable melody. The WW example we heard was mainly just a beat.

I think Captain America is the better hero. He is a small man that has known weakness all his life, and doesn't really know what to do with his new-found superpowers. He discovers what war is actually like when he hears about Bucky's imprisonment, and saves all those men. Not because he came to stop the war like Wonder Woman, but to do his part. He is humble and doesn't change through the movie, because he is an already developed character. You know what he stands for in the first few scenes of the movie, even without the muscles to back it up. I don't really know that much about Wonder Woman, (only seen the movie once) but I do know that Steve Rogers is the better hero, simply because he finally has the opportunity to help other people, he wants to stick up for all the little guys being oppressed by the bully called Hydra. ...............Do I sound like a Captain America fan yet? Agreed. Really, the best of Steve Rogers' character development comes from Winter Soldier and Civil War, rather than from the First Avenger. The First Avenger is actually strengthened by this, as the point of the movie was to show a man remain pure and uncorrupted by power. Might have would have worked better by giving the character development to the antagonist by showing someone with initially good ideals falling to corruption, but of course no one wants to go there with Nazi collaborators.

One of the issues I have with Cap in the MCU, even though hes one of my favorite heroes in the MCU is that hes kinda a flat character. I also feel like they couldve explored more with Captain America but I digress. His costume in Avengers 1 was terrible btw and I still dont buy the whole civil war conflict. Cap, this isnt Hydra, why are you going rouge?!
@victorebell73836 жыл бұрын
He went rogue because they were on the clock. Back when he was under the assumption that Zemo's endgame was a supersoldier suicide squad, he knew that there was no way that they would be able to catch Zemo before he disappeared again if they complied with Ross. Their one advantage was that they knew where Zemo was going to be next, and they knew that if they wasted time trying to explain the situation to Ross and getting approval from the U.N., they would lose that advantage. This was touched on near the beginning of the film when Cap expressed his concern "what if there's some place we need to go, and they won't let us?" In the end, they came to the (probably correct) conclusion that pushing past the other half other the Avengers would consume less time than waiting for the bureaucrats to reach a consensus, so that's what they did. Not saying that movie was perfect, but if anyone's actions made little sense in the movie, it was Tony's, not Cap's. Wanting to punch Bucky in the face a couple of times would be understandable, but Tony was straight up trying to murder him. Also I have no idea what Vision was doing during the airport fight. I would say Scarlet Witch was keeping him at bay, as she's the only one who could, but there's several scenes showing her assisting other Avengers, so where was he? Just floating around waiting for his chance to break someone's spine?

The First Avenger has some of the worst green screen I've seen in an MCU movie. And it completely loses the point in storytelling when that stupid montage starts.

What are you talking about? TFA does a great job in the first two acts, too, it's the third act where it slightly falters because it rushes through so many events to get Cap in the ice but unlike Wonder Woman it actually manages to stay consistent with its themes and delivers a big punch in the very end.
@antona.13276 жыл бұрын
swanpride, its first act is barely decent. The moment he puts on the first Captain America suit was the moment the movie took a deep dive. Not only does it make no sense (no one would've allowed Steve Rogers go on with his life like this; he's a governmental property from now), but it wastes our time. It could've been used for something much more interesting than that. And then that whole "brocomandos montage" happens, and that's when the movie dies for me. The First Avenger is one of the least compelling origin stories in the superhero movie genre. It's no Batman Begins.
@satkirankaur5506 жыл бұрын
@@antona.1327 Either Newspaper headlines, Newsreel footage or a montage was necessary to convey the passage of time and progress of the war from 1943 - 1945. Most movies tend to be based on events that take place in a shorter space of time ranging from days, weeks or months. These can be easier to depict without the need to condensing the the time frame. Do you think events in the first Iron Man movie took place over a two year period or those in Thor? What about The Mission Impossible movies? Captain America the first Avenger needed to highlight how Cap and his team took the fight to Hydra without having to detail every mission. Wonder Woman on the other hand had only to relate the shorter time frame from when she left Paradise Island to fight in the war which was then in its closing stage with the armistice to end the war being openly discussed.

Round 1: Point for Marvel. Chris Evans is not just the better actor, he also gets the better material to work with when it comes to establishing the character. From the "nope" scene, to the "I can do it all day" scene, to the "Mulan" scene, to the "jumping on the bomb" scene, to him slightly smiling seeing himself on screen, the movie does a way better job establishing the character than with Wonder Woman, who mostly just stands there and looks dramatic. And what they do with her so called character development doesn't make any sense. She has read a lot and knows many languages and yet she doesn't really know anything about human nature and human life? Not even what a man and a woman do with each other? What kind of books has she read in which none of this is ever mentioned? In any case though, saying that Cap doesn't have "character development" is a dishonest measurement, because that is not the point of his movie. The First Avenger is about him showing proving himself to the world and to change it into something better. Him sticking to his guns no matter what is exactly what makes Cap such a great character. Round 2: Point for Marvel. The Red Skull might not be the best villain around, but at least his design is memorable and he makes more sense than CGI Ares. Round 3: I am not sure if everyone getting a backstory in Wonder Woman is really a plus. More isn't necessarily better. The main reason why I am inclined to give this point to Marvel is because NONE of the characters are in any way weak and they all do exactly what is needed for the story instead of kind of taking away the story from the hero. I am looking at you Chris Pine. Round 4: Yeah, way to go missing all what The First Avenger has to say about WWII nostalgia and war propaganda. But yeah, it does a way better job doing what it set itself out to do, while Wonder Woman undercuts its own themes in the third act. Point to Marvel. Round 5: I don't think that this is an easy point for DC at all. You can't just ignore the goofiness which is the third act, and I think that The First Avenger does a really good just transforming actual comic book panels into its action scenes. Not to mention the goofiness which are Wonder Woman's combat scenes, in which people leave their save advantage point just so that they can be killed as dramatic as possible, or attacker are just standing around waiting for their partners to get taken out instead of taking advantage of the opportunity. Wonder Woman has one or two really great moments, but the action overall is extremely flawed, not just in the way it is staged, but also in the way it is shot. When it is great, it is great, but I don't think one can just wave away all time times when it isn't. Round 6: No, I am not like you. I lovelovelove the Captain America theme. It captures the character perfectly. And let's not forget the "Man with a Plan" song from Alan Menken. Genius, still think that he should have gotten an academy award nomination for this one. The Wonder Woman theme, well, it sticks out, but I don't quite get how it is even connected to the character. The Captain America score does a waaaay better job to underline the mood of the scenes and to elevate them at the right places. Point goes to Marvel. Round 7: Yeah...the CGI is terrible in Wonder Woman. The First Avenger has this great sepia tone over everything, which gives it this nostalgic feel. Well, it is 6 clear points for the Marvel and one maybe for DC from me. Sorry, but while Wonder Woman is easily the best of the DCEU movies, The First Avenger might be the most underrated of the MCU movies. It easily beats out Wonder Woman due to being a more thought-out work with only one weakness, which is the need to rush through the actual WWII battles in order to get Cap into the ice as fast as possible. This is evened out, though, but what might be one of the most gut-punch endings of the MCU.
@satkirankaur5506 жыл бұрын
swanpride what you describe as "the rush through the actual WWII battles in order to get Cap into the ice as fast as possible" were a necessary device. The movie could not cover in depth the multitude of missions that Cap and his team must have undertaken during the war. Compare that with the 1990 Captain America movie which basically had him on ice after his first and only wartime mission. By limiting his wartime activities to such a degree that movie never gave Cap a chance to become the inspirational national hero he should have been. This was compounded by the fact that there wasn't even any evidence of public awareness of him. As someone whose interest in World War II history was largely sparked by Captain America comics, I would have prefered a depiction closer to actual history in CA:TFA. However it did convey the passage of time from Cap being a propaganda symbol in the public eye to becoming an active super-soldier on numerous missions in a coherent manner.

I have to disagree with you on the comrades in arms section. Chris Pine was great as Steve Trevor, but I never really felt the rest of the group. Yes, they each get a little backstory, but why? What does it add to the rest of the movie? Personally, I think they could have cut them out entirely and spent that time giving us more Diana and Steve. The Howling Commandos on the other hand add some character and attitude to the movie, without distracting from the main focus of the film. Oh, and while I don't think the fact that both movies had a character named Steve who heroically crashed a plane makes them an obvious comparison (The fact that they're both Superhero origin stories set in a World War is a much better point of comparison), if you're going that route, lean all the way into it. Both movies have a character named Steve played by a guy named Chris heroically crashing planes to save a lot of lives at the end of the movie.

WW is basically the start of Thor and the end of Captain America. Super beings living in isolation (Asgard/Themyscira), the story of the hero (Thor/WW) growing up, disobeying their ruler (Odin/Hippolyta). Then switch to Captain America, the hero (Cap/WW) joins forces with others (howling commandos/bunch of misfits) during a war (WW1/WW2) to fight the hidden big bad (red skull/ares). They seemingly lose their closest ally (Bucky/Steve Trevor). Then cut to the present day (Times Square/Paris). Having said that I enjoyed all 3 films.

I can't believe you discussed the score and didn't mention the War Bonds shows montage sequence from Captain America. THAT song alone, for it's period authenticity and basic quality, is better than anything in Wonder Woman by FAR. "He's strong and brave, here to save the American Way!"
@thudthud54236 жыл бұрын
I like that vintage styled them and that scene. Some might call it corny, but it seems very realistic for the story. The idea of the of him raising warbonds as well as a public face and the USO giving Steve Rogers a "Flash Gordonish" type of costume that, through circumstance turned into his Captain America uniform was a brilliant one. The only other superhero in the MCU (besides the flashy hot rod Iron Man armor that met Tony Stark's personality) is Spider-Man's and Peter Parker got his "underoos" from Tony Stark. (Peter's original outfit was very primitive as seen in the KZbin video Tony showed him.) I don't want to drag this side comment out too much, but the fact that the Capt. America uniform in the "Avengers" seemed so cheesy, by comparison to his other uniforms was that it was designed and chose in-story by the Agent Coulson character who was a fan of Cap's and that the best image he had of Capt. America was that he had from the trading cards which had his USO uniform.

The Story writer Zach Snyder has one preach point in all his DC movies. " We must kill all the gods" . He forces Ares into this movie just so he can make that very point.
@lisaleyendekker83056 жыл бұрын
I agree that Cap 1 is the superior movie, but I did enjoy wonder woman. though, when I was watching the film, there were so many things that were similar to Cap that it became distracting at times. the third act in wonder woman was ruined by having Ares exist and the war simultaneously end like the humans came out of a trance or spell after he is defeated. It left a plot hole where the humans still wage war even though the god of war, the causer of all wars to escalate, was defeated. she also didn't participate in the second world war, and likely won't participate in anything major untill her nemisis Cheetah shows up in the 1980s (thats in the sequel), so it paints wonder woman as naive in that the war to end all wars actually ended all wars. I actually wanted Ares to be make believe, or like the boogie man, or to have a bit of ares dispersed into every man to explain human's natural instinct for war, as it would have settled Wonder woman in reality and disillusioned her to the apparent "goodness" of man. but his apparent realness was all it took for me to dislike the third act.
@mon_nobi6 жыл бұрын
Lol what reasoning is that for him to exist? It was a dumb choice that essentially ruined not only the third act, but the entire message of the movie. Had he not been real, or had been real but explained that the instinct for war was innate in the humans and not of his doing, then the movie would have been MUCH MUCH better and with a more satisfying conclusion. Also why even kill off one of her greatest foes in her first film? Seems like the writers got bored/tired and saw they were short for time so just threw out random ideas to be done with it.

I wold also said Captain America is the better hero. He literally is the definition of heroic. While Captain America doesn't go through much change, thats kinda the point, and his arc is still amazing. Wonder Woman is amazing, and a supernatural being who completely dominates the fight. Captain America is not as powerful in strength, but in courage, spirit, and heroics, Captain America is much better. Wonder Woman is my favorite DCEU hero and Captain America is my favorite MCU hero. But Cap just has a clear straightforward relatable personality and Wonder Woman was a bit hard to relate to. Also I think Cap was more heroic as he made (or meant to make) the ultimate sacrifice and the plane scene when he was on the line with Peggy was heartbreaking. Wonder Woman meanwhile abandons humanity, to be fair, she had good reason in her mind, and her comrade makes the sacrifice and she kills the villain. I like Cap better.

The fact Captain America never changes is part of his character. I worked in a comic shop for nearly 10 years, and the fanboys always had debates about which is better, DC or Marvel. Simply put, there is a big difference between the two. For Marvel, it boils down to real life characters rising above themselves to be the character name. Peter Parker is always Peter Parker, but steps up to be Spider-man. Steve Rogers is always Steve Rogers, but he steps up to be Captain America. The persona they become is not their everyday persona, yet they are always the non-super powered being they always were in personality and character, the abilities that change them is an after thought. They have to pretend to be Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. As characters, they are usually set apart from other human beings, often with story lines where they are demonized, such as the mutants in X-Men, but all super beings are in most ways are looked down on by the people at large. Often because of the damage their fights incur. Not always, but most times. For DC, it is the opposite. Bruce Wayne is always Batman and he pretends to be Bruce Wayne. He was transformed into the Dark Knight the night his parents were shot. Superman is always Superman, and has to pretend to be Clark Kent. Wonder Woman is always Princess Diana, always Wonder Woman, but pretends to be Diana Prince. They are looked at like gods, beings put on a pedestal by the people at large, and people usually look up to them, especially when in danger. Marvel's characters tend to be the most relate-able, since they live in the same world we do, act like us, have the same issues as us, and we can transport ourselves into their characters with those very human issues they face. DC characters are less relate-able, because they are always superpowered or their abilities are out of our reach, but they exist more as morality tales or parables on which we can relate to. In the rare times when DC characters are genuinely human, we can relate to them, but most times they are beyond what every day people can be. In some ways, they are the perfect versions of humanity, and are the idealized beings. This sets them apart from us. There are always exceptions to these general differences of course, but for the most part this is what the major differences are. So it isn't exactly right to compare Captain America to Wonder Woman. A lot of people can relate to bullies but not the naivete of coming from and living on an island of all women (wouldn't that be nice).

However, it's true Steve Rogers, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hayley Atwell has more impact than the WW stars. I really like the "A good man" line from Stanley Tucci character cause it shape how the audience see Captain America not only in this movie but every time Cap appear on screen, we see him not as a symbol of USA but "a good man doing his part". Wonder Woman's character was never explained that direct, I mean if the person that she rescue was not "Steve from England" but "Helmut from Germany" would she be fighting for Nazi Germany? cause anyone that watches war movies knows both sides in a war believe they are the right one and even Steve from England admit that their side is not better than the other side.

In WW2, the nazis were the bad guys, but in WW1 it was just Germany and the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy (and a few others) against GB and the USA (and a few others). If this "Helmut" would've been a nice guy like Steve, she might have searched for Ares in GB. I think that's part of the reason why Wonder Womans "all humans can be bad" message works well. Because all sides are to blame and none of them is really the good guys. Had the setting been WW2 it wouldn't have worked as good, since the nazi-leaders were pretty... evil.

But also the entire score feels like music out of movies from the 40's. It adds to the feeling of the movie. So much so that I occasionally forget it's a modern film when I'm listen to the WW2 era marches Silvestri creates in the movie. The Wonder Woman melody is badass. But to me, the melody itself is the only thing about the score of that movie that stands out. The rest is very good, but not notable, as someone who listens to these soundtracks all the time without the movie.

No Wonder Woman has WAY better action from her lasso to her bracelets it something new we have never seen in the first avenger it’s just shields and guns

I feel like Wonder Woman's theme is indeed memorable. The guitar strums do the job... but at the same time, it was only fun the first few times. Because, after a while, the blaring notes from the guitar became less badass and more of a nuisance. Because, I was expecting the loud blaring of the same old notes repeated over and over. While the The First Avenger theme seems somewhat gentle in comparison, perhaps that's a good thing. As, over time, I have found that I enjoy the patriotic theme that accents the scene rather than the in your face guitar. But, that's just me. I don't know about anyone else.

For me the difference is mostly that the Captain America score underlines the mood of the movie, while the Wonder Woman theme doesn't fit at all.

Just like the ancient lamentations is Snyder Cut...

You should also consider that Captain America came out way before Wonder Woman

WW gang dont have a backstory, its just exposition while the howling commandos are useful to cap cuz the movie showed their experties (bomb expert, driver, backup, etc) for a mission.. while the copycats are rather useless cuz ww can doett all w/o a scratch 🤨!! Lame group and a waste of plot tbh..

The very best thing to come from not only DCEU but from all of comic movies is the Wonder Woman theme. That is literally my favorite thing ever.

I honestly think the theme from Captian America is way more memorable then Wonder Woman
@matthiasmccormack32136 жыл бұрын
I would switch the point for score and for story. The Wonder Woman theme is great, but it just doesn't fit with her character (and I think you're under rating the Cap theme)

WW is the least mediocre of the DCEU and it gets praised. Why? It still sucked. Just because it wasn’t worse than the rest, doesn’t mean it’s good. CGI was god awful, Villain is laughably bad, and Gal is just not believable in the role

My problem with Wonder woman is that Ludendorff was not a bad guy, also the German army in WW I was not like the German army in WW II, they make the Germans look like Nazis when they weren't.

I know I will get hate for this but hey, it's my opinion. Wonder Woman the movie is highly overrated. I had to end it half way through because I couldn't stand how naive they made Diane look during the majority of the movie. If that was a movie about making women look strong; it failed them mentally but not physically. Yes, we have seen women can be physically powerful from movies before so what makes Wonder Woman so special anyways? That their strong female character is the name of the movie. I just hated seeing her look so dumb especially compared to how smart and wise she is in Justice League. Now considering that we all believe she just disappeared for a hundred years, I highly doubt her 1984 movie will be impressive or anything interesting to me either. Not trying to be anti-feminist, I just didn't see it working with Gal Gadot even though she did give her role everything she had as what I believe was her first role as an actress. I heard she was a model before joining the DCEU, so to end on a high note; good for her, i guess.

Holy shit. People are too forgiving with Wonder Woman. That movie was terrible. Should just do a video to find out which is more over hyped between Wonder Woman and Black Panther.

The result says BP is way more over rated with all those racism related talk and Oscar talk. Not mention the box office result with BP earning like 50% more than WW.
@foop29546 жыл бұрын
I think that Black panther succeeds where WW fails. BP- Strong Villain Great Acting Sub-par visual effects Great Chemistry Awesome action Character Arcs and development WW- Weak villain sub-par acting good visual effects good chemistry Great action No character development

The first point should’ve gone to cap, the whole point is that tiny guy or super soldier he doesnt stop fighting for what is right and he doesn’t change as a person at all after his transformation

I watched WW last night and thought, "wow this is strikingly similar to cap's first flick". So glad I found this video, it felt good to know some one felt the same away and held most of my points! Agreed with all points, except the score for captain America was so much better imo haha. Nonetheless great video, homie!
