Agree, that the movie has a higher value then. I like the movie, didnt bother watching it when i rewatched the infinity saga however. Same went for the Guardians movies and Antman. One could argue those movies are not that well implemented in the overall storyarc, especially compared to movies like Civil War or Thor Ragnarok. If the Iron Man movies wouldnt be set right in the beginning, you could argue that those arent that well done as well. Now i feel the overall comparison of Captain America and Captain Marvel is flawed. This comparison looks at two single movies but theres no way around that subconsciously Captain America is put in a broader perspective of his 3 movies, where Winter Soldier and Civil War are simply very good movies with a lot of references and a lot of story that Captain Marvel couldnt have yet. I honestly dont quite get why Captain Marvel "didnt work" and it feels to me that this comparison is simply based on the opinion that one movie is better than the other. The argument is heavily construed and framed. Think a second about the title of the video and if that really explains anything. Captain Marvel didnt work because it wasnt done like Captain America (so much about the "similarities" ;theyre both origin stories,thats it). Thats a moot point by logic already.

When The First Avenger came out, it wasn't as well-received as is being portrayed here. BUT this video does provide some really nice suggestions about restructuring, and I would definitely watch it recut in the way he described.

@@nnmartin94 I don't know how well Captain America: The first avenger was received by the public on its release, but I know that I started to watch Marvel movies after I saw it and realized that it already had The winter soldier and 3 Iron man produced. I caught up with Marvel in a week with all relaesed movies, like Thor 1 and 2 and Avengers etc, I remember seeing Antman also but it did not trigger me to search for more as The first avenger movie did.

@@malteeising716 it’s more of an issue of where it is, rather than what it is. Guardians (IMO top 5 MCU movie) and AntMan werent sandwiched between the two most important movies (IW and Endgame). As for the comparisons, you gotta remember those earlier movies were just that... earlier. Back then we really didn’t know what a good marvel movie looked like (as in like critic and audience acclaimed), but since the first team-up we’ve been given multiple. There’s simply no excuse for captain marvel to have fallen as flat as it did, and it really leaves you scratching your head as to why it even needed to be included. Just my take on it

Yes. We actually saw how arrogant and a hothead thor was. The scene that shows this is where one of the frost-giant said "run on back home princess"(or something like that) and Thor proceeded to punch him in the face

Although, I do think that Thor did get wiser through the his whole plotline in the cinema universe, I think that there were too little time on the Earth in 1 Thor. Like film shows only few weeks, when it seems like he spend there few months. And that is exactly why Stever Rogers has such an amazing character building.

So i get why people, especially men identify with Captain America's underdog arc. The core theme/tension of Captain Marvel's character is a woman who is told she isn't powerful/good enough without them and is held back by her society/her "mentor" figure. She's too emotional and needs to learn control... i get it, straight men don't relate. It feels forced to you all because "that doesn't happen both genders are judged exactly equally"....but there is a huge portion of the population who it IS relateable to. Capt. Marvel wasn't an origin story. It's a reclamation and emancipation story. Open up your eyes straight white dudes of America.

It does make that scene in The Winter Soldier worse, and they do make a horrible joke about it in the movie, but the continuity is still there. Watched the movie twice. Once with my dad, and once with my friend. Disliked it both times and my friend agreed. But for some unknown reason my dad loved it and has become a Brie Larson stan, and gets defensive at any criticism towards Captain Marvel the movie, the Larson’s portrayal, and Larson herself. It’s sad that I have to repeatedly put him down on this issue for the sole reason of this movie being bad. Too much cringe, the jokes weren’t that funny, horrible decision to not have the movie be in chronological order, and a bland protagonist. They even had the audacity to throw in the line “I don’t even know who I am!!!” and not expect the audience to cringe. The only reason this movie performed as well as it did is because at that point the MCU had become too big to fail, they had fans built up and invested over 20 movies. With a guaranteed audience and some decent marketing, any and every MCU movie should be able to turn a profit. They even put it right before their biggest movie ever to convince people that it was a much watch before Endgame like Antman&Wasp. Nothing in that movie was necessary prior to Endgame, you learned that Captain Marvel has powers, which was irrelevant for over 95% of that movie. You learned that shapeshifters good & kree bad, which also had no implications in Endgame. And you had the tesseract AGAIN, which means nothing to the audience since we already know that it’s destroyed. This movie should’ve been put in phase 1, cause it really is just a lower quality phase 1 movie, and left it alone to allow hype for the character to build for them to be useful in phase 3&4.

Personally I was worried about her mental health from all the physical, mental and emotional abuse she got from the ones she was trying to identify with, the Kree. Tarantino can get away with this because he can set up events that are happening in the present that show you who characters are and then he explains later how they got there. Captain Marvel was such a bad movie, but that all they can make when the requirement is "strong female character". Apparently "Strong" for them means that they have to be borderline flawless, have little if any adversity and be overpowered AF. If they wanted to go with the "control your emotions", then they needed to show her doing stuff that either made her lose, even with all that power, because of an impulsive move, or be the reason people get hurt/lose rank/she loses X, then it would make sense, but she was a plank of wood the whole time. Captain Marvel, Rey, and most "strong female characters" these days can't hold a candle to Ripley, Sara Connors and Brianne of Tarths our there.

Wow, I didn't expect this summary to be... So incredibly insightful and on point. I really don't want to like Captain America because on paper he seems so bland and lacks "growth". Yet I simply can't help it, he's such a good hero. On the other hand, as a woman, I wanted to love Captain Marvel, and I just... didn't. This explains so much. Edit: Your insight to her story being reframed as a woman captured into an abusive power struggle with a man that audiences are rooting for her to break free from was so compelling. I think that the reason that many criticisms of this movie revolves around social justice is for two major reasons. First and most obviously is it came out in 2019 and Disney was marketing the two tent pole franchises as empowering for women. I think this pissed a lot of butt hurt people. 2nd because I think there is truth to the complaint. I think there is a core of “social justice” at the heart of Captain Marvel. I use air quotes here because it’s a superficial twitter/social media level of social justice. To be blunt it’s pandering, and not actually confronting real issues of justice. This is way versus Black Panther. Which does through the complex character of Kill Monger. Both films are about social justice. One however explores the deep and flawed complexities, the other is a pandering preformative “social justice”. It’s shallow. This criticism points this out as well but I think the social justice concept is at the core of the failure in the story this movie is telling. Captain Marvel is very Mary Sue.

Jolly Swift True, there are flaws with this movie on a fundamental level, on every various aspect of its ‘complexity’ it’s basically just a simplified Marvel formula movie, with Social Justice talking points sprinkled all in there. By the way, I wrote this all out and then realized I typed out an entire damn book so I don’t actually expect anyone to read all of this and I thoroughly apologize to anyone who does in advance, here’s a potato 🥔 you’ll find another one at the bottom as interest xD People don’t want to see a buzzword talking point being addressed unless it’s an actually grounded and real issue. For example, Black Panther, in my opinion, did a great deal of showing how to address racial injustices of the past. The 90’s was a very violent decade for many black communities, and many have held onto and passed on the hateful emotions about that time, in the movie this culminates into Killmonger, a man who bears the hatred of past racial violence mixed with hatred at seeing a thriving and powerful black community - Wakanda - refusing to help those of their own race around the world. So he dedicates his entire life to taking both down, and when his plan fails and he recognizes that he would be locked up as a war criminal, he recalls the slave trade and the feeling of bondage, again not letting go of the past and seeing too many similarities in the modern day. T’Challa (RIP Chadwick) is a foil to this, growing up both in royalty and within the protection of Wakanda, he knew nothing of racial injustices in other countries. When confronted with a man who was so consumed with hate, doing all the wrong things for all the right reasons, it changed T’Challa’s viewpoint of isolationism, he realized he must help out those who are stuck in unfortunate circumstances. But, rather than trying to level the playing field by tearing down and exterminating certain people like Killmonger wanted to do, he made choices to raise others up, i.e. building low income housing in poverty stricken neighborhoods, as well as presumably other charitable deeds. Black Panther isn’t saying that there are racial injustices still happening now, but that the effects still linger - so the solution isn’t to target people since nobody is causing it now. But rather to just minimize the effects. That is a way to portray a social issue. Captain Marvel attempted to address sexism; however, they took the shallow, 3rd wave feminism point of view towards it and therefore had a shallow movie. They even had a good start, sexism in the workplace/military during the 80’s was a genuine issue and even when it was rectified, the 90’s still would’ve had chastising and booing towards women going into positions they never could’ve had before. But, they did ruin it by transferring that idea into the modern day and acting as if women are still blocked at every turn, when statistically that’s just not true, it’s not that women can’t reach certain positions it’s just that, on average, women want other things like family and children. But the movie doesn’t see that, they only see the past issues and kept it into modern day. So, essentially the entirety of the movie is like a sexist version of Killmonger, refusing to let go of the past and seeing similarities in the modern day where there aren’t. BUT the problem with dissecting the social justice problem of the movie is that it takes a really long time to explain in full detail WHY it’s a problem so people will typically just say “It sucks because it focuses on social justice too much” Sorry for long comment, here’s a potato 🥔

@@chyffon5454 Steve Rogers was shown to have a big heart through his story - a heart of a hero. Carol Danvers (through the flashbacks) was shown to be a fighter. There is a difference between a hero and a fighter. Of course, neither of them were quitters, but Steve did it mostly for the good of others (telling the guy in the theater to be quiet, throwing himself on a grenade, etc). Carol fought just to prove something to herself.

I get your point now. The problem is that I don’t get that from the movie. Almost all Marvel heroes are fighters too, I don’t think the movie made it clear that her fighter quality is more than anyone else. I don’t read the comics and I don’t have the comic’s data to fill the void, I don’t love or hate her as a character, her image in my head is just blank and not as clear as heroes without a solo film like falcon or Hawkeye. I just think C.Marv could’ve been a much better film if the script is a bit more polished, maybe make her fighting spirit looks higher that the cliche level, idk. As a principle I don't typically like time travel, often used to patch up plot holes, but this was one of the few places that made sense to more or less make a scrap book of the characters. There are plenty of other elements in Captain Marvel that don't work: The Skrull impersonating Fury's boss not knowing Fury goes by Fury when the movie stipulates Skrulls take on the short term memory of those they transform into. The Skrull left behind for no reason other than as a plot device to die at the hands of the Kree. A ten year old encouraging her single mother to go on the final death defying mission. And because the film wasn’t character driven, it was agenda driven. They wanted a powerful heroine to be in a girl power flick. This switched the product from building a great character into pushing a narrative, a narrative we’ve seen performed way better with way better characters in movies like Kill Bill and Velma & Louise. If they were purely looking to create a great character movie, we would’ve probably gotten a solid MCU film since that would’ve been the writers’ focus. However, it is not which is why we have all the highly symbolic dialogue, flashbacks, and victories that aren’t earned because the character was though of afterwards. I hope CM2 learns from CM’s mistakes and makes Carol a decent character worthy of the MCU....although I doubt it.

Captain Marvel worked fine It establishes, quite clearly that she is always trying to push the limits, both as a thrill seeker type, and pushing social exceptions, first by pushing to be a female fighter pilot, then by constantly being a thorn in Yon-Rogg's side. They both have the "I won't stay down" mentality. The difference between the two is simply that Steve is out to protect others, while Carol is out to prove herself. The lack of appeal is because she is about herself instead of about others, but that is true to the comic book character as well.

To me Capt. Marvel was a story that landed in those final moments. That idea that being human is why we can fall very hard - but also just keep getting back up. Similar, but not the same as Cap's tagline. I cried at the end of Captain Marvel. After the movie. It definitely would've benefitted from being told in chronological order, but even as is, it inspired me to stop thinking I need to "fix" me, or that it is a problem that failures happen. And I relate to those flashbacks of being told "haha you failed, you always fail, you'll never do it" - and yet, her having that resilience was inspiring. Especially because she was a female character.

Something else that disappointed me was that we never saw how she learned to use her powers after she knew she had control. She is unsure of herself and her powers and suddenly she is all-powerful and fully competent. I don't buy it.

Similar thing with Raven in Netflix's teen titans. In the show she's afraid of her emotions and unable to use or control it because she doesmt understamd it but SUDDENLY. she is able to use her powers because ...yk...PLOT. Raven is my favorite Titan and I am appalled at what they did to her. She is kind of similar to Carol Danvers in a way, where Carol doesn't show any emotions in the movie, JUST BECAUSE(yk, STRONG WOMAN) Raven on the other hand keeps her emotions in check because she is in control of her powers out of fear of them and she had time to understand it. And even though she appears emotionless, you still see her expressing some emotions and you get an insight of who the character is. Her emotions are dangerous and we've seen it in both comics and Teen Titans Cartoon Network series

Let’s see, she learned how to fly because she used her photon blasts early in the movie to thrust herself to keep from being sucked out into space on the Skrull ship. That’s pretty much the only power we saw her use at the end. Everything else she did throughout the movie. Seems like someone wasn’t paying attention. Interesting how no one complains when Tony has a new suit every movie or how Thor magically summons lightening and flies without his hammer in Sakaar.

one of the problems with the movie is that carol doesn’t get a standard marvel movie hero moment, like sure when she’s talking to the supreme intelligence she breaks free form the krees control but she never had a scene where she falls into despair or gives up. every other marvel character solo movie has one of these, like when tony takes peters suit away, when quill realizes his father has killed his other siblings or when t’challa is thrown off the cliff by killmonger. each of these characters comes back stronger and more willing than before now that they’ve seen what’s at stake and what they might have to sacrifice. that being said, i really hope they fix everything in Captain Marvel 2 :)

I thought it was very clear that Captain Marvel was being gaslit and controlled, being told to stop being "emotional" to prevent her from using her powers and for her to realise she is stronger than everyone. The idea that if she uses her powers it actually makes her mentally weak and she needs to learn to fight without them was an idea pummelled into her as soon as the Kree took her away from earth. This is what I saw the movie being about, overcoming this mental manipulation and owning her powers. Probably something a lot of people, many women, could relate to. I liked it!

Captain Marvel is Superman with no Witnesses. No Jimmy Olsen, no Lois Lane, no Kryptonite, no magic, and most importantly no strong moral code. With those limitations, It's pretty hard to write good Superman stories. Without those limitations it basically impossible.

Who could possibly stand against a being that can fly at the speed of light and could bench press a planet? Some of the best superman stories have to due with morality. Lex Luthor is a criminal mastermind that superman could easily punt him to the moon but superman would be no better than him. The death of superman dealt with how would superman deal with an unstoppable force that will kill everything? All star superman dealt with how superman's life would mean when it ends. Anytime superman fights darkseid it's always a story of the ultimate good against the ultimate evil. Captain marvel has no such moral quandaries. No wait scratch that there was something in the movie but they didn't explore it. Carol has been a warrior for the kree for 5 years believing she was in the right until the truth was revealed to her. She never contemplated the amount of blood on her hands, the amount of innocent lives she helped destroy. She never showed remorse, nor did she apologized. Again I point to the example of ender in ender's game. He reacted like a human despite being a person who mostly uses logic and intellect. Captain marvel is a blank of wood and a terrible example of a hero

I actually didn't realize that until you mentioned it. They really didn't need captain marvel for it. Her intro in the movie was just trashy since thanos already destroyed the stones, her scenes in the final fight were a mess because she just came in and destroyed the ship when multiple other heroes could have done the same (i.e. good intro for world breaker hulk), and she didn't even deliver the gauntlet and caused a slight disturbance when she went to battle thanos. Like they messed up with that because how is he going to be overpowered with 6 stones, remove the power stone, and then just punch her with it even though he already had the power stone in the gauntlet in the first place. They could have just gotten thor over there, or hulk, or captain america, or just speed up with the iron man ending.

Captain Marvel was the only one who was able to destroy it because for one it was a good entrance for her to enter the battle, two it gave a breathing room for the others who was bombarded and three Carol is one of the strongest character so far since this version is powered with the Infinity Stone. She also stopped Thanos when he was about to snap giving time for the other heroes and Tony to take the stone from Thanos. Also, don't forget that without her Tony would have died from starvation in space.

At that point is not really a choice to do the right thing, she's just fighting against evil, why would she care if they were her allies when it was revealed they are evil? It would have been completely different if they weren't evil, if they hadn't controlled her to that point and if the other guys weren't completely victims and refugees so she had to come to a tough decision on her own. But as is presented in the movie, no. If you're kidnapped and lied and you break free and fight back, that's not "doing the right thing". It's just the obvious thing to do, there is no sacrifice (specially if you're completely overpowered), no stakes, no choice, nothing. What is the message? Fight back against evil dudes who harmed you directly? That's nothing.

This was exactly what I said. The thing about Marvel is they do such a great job establishing characters that you care about. That they never established Carol Danvers character, therefore I never really cared what happened to her. I remember telling my nephew that they did more establishing the Falcon's backstory in less than 10 minutes in CAWS than they did with Capt. Marvel with a whole movie. It's sad because I was so excited for this movie, and it's one of the few MCU movies that I never rewatch.

The emotional thing. The point is that Carole isn't over emotional. Occasionally, sometimes, but not really. The Kree are gas lighting her to make her feel insecure and bad at what she does so that she looks to them to define her. That's the whole point of that. Carole is fin. But she's constantly battling against what she thinks she is because they've deliberately undermined her confidence to control her.

When I saw Capt. Marvel in the theater, I tried so hard to relate to her. Hell, I'm blonde (more strawberry now, but I was near platinum as a kid), I have blue eyes, I was very tomboyish as a kid, I played a full-contact co-ed sport in undergrad, and now I'm a woman in a STEM Master's program - this character was practically designed for someone like me! I left the theater so disappointed and sad. Yeah, I relate much more to Steve Rogers than to Carol Danvers. I even used to whisper "I can do this all day" during tackling drills and when I got tackled/grappled during games, especially when the tackler/grappler was a man. You best believe I channeled that Steve Rogers tenacity and stubbornness, because I was known for keeping possession of the ball even when I got tackled by someone twice my size or locked in a grappling match with someone significantly stronger than I.

I wasn't expecting anything bad from a movie, but was ready to just leave because of one thing - her former partner and her discussing how "the boys don't allow us to fly real planes and don't treat us as real pilots"... while they are both test pilots for experimental aircraft. Because Gagarin, Armstrong, Tereshkova and dozens of others "weren't real pilots" apparently. This was a straw that almost broke the camel's back for me. To see Disney, who is already licking up to Penthagon a lot just to get free equipment for filming(from taxpayer pocket), daring to open its mouth and say such a thing. Otherwise it wasn't so bad. One of the things I feel not just Captain Marvel, but also people in general have completely forgotten for some reason, is that role models aren't gender exclusive. You can be a girl and look up to a man, or be a boy and look up to a woman. It isn't their gender that defines them. If it were Stephanie Rogers, I'd still think Captain America is a damn good person with a super strong and respectable character. Hell, a lot of my favorite characters tend to be Women for no other reason than me liking who they are and what they represent.

that’s the problem with writers doing female protagonists on film. Their so consumed with trying to make them fearless, powerful, and strong that they forget to do the most basic thing. Make. Them. Human. By that i mean make them have flaws and overcome dose flaws by the end of the film. U don’t need to make captain marvel a barely emotional protagonist. just use the same formula as u would with the male protagonist. Make them human, make them experience pain and failure and make them grow from dose experience.

it is all to there motivation: if there goal is to "tell a grate story", no compromises, and they actually believe in the project, they are usually ending up with a great movie. If they just intend to do some virtue signaling, caching in some dollars, and are feared to challenge the "comfort zone" of some viewers ... they miss a an opportunity. IMO, this is what we all see. Filmmakers trying to fit into the norm, just swimming with the current to get a part of the cake, making compromises to not offend some viewers, only trying to appeal to others instead of doing it "there way", and, most importantly, underestimating there audience will always make boring movies. 😔

I feel The First Avenger is so underrated. A lot of people talk badly of it because it's communicates American patriotism that was very much there in the 1940's by default and even enhanced by wartime propaganda. I think The First Avenger is one of the best MCU movies and I'm not even an American conservative and generally find overblown American patriotism annoying. Captain Marvel however is one of the worst.

Yeah, I really liked First Avenger. I'm one of the only people I know who rates it higher than Winter Soldier. I actually felt Winter Soldier was a bit ho-hum. Of course, I like "period" stuff as well as Superhero stuff so it appeals in that sense. Part of the reason Wonder Woman was so awesome as well (that and good acting and story-telling) Captain Marvel was just kind of forgettable. Nothing in it really appealed. And I was a teenager/young adult throughout the 90's so they had plenty of opportunities to hit that Nostalgia button... never managed it though.
