This footage in Thurmont is from the mid fifties. The Hagerstown and Frederick ceased operations on the passenger side in nearly '54 and freight operations a short time later.

@@jerryrollins512 Wow, jerryrollins512 that means most of this footage is way earlier than I thought originally. We updated the description thanks again for pointing that out.

The CC captioning labels the train engine and wheel sounds as "music"

@@charlessmileyvideos The Hagerstown and Frederick FL footage was in 54-55. The H&F was a wholly owned subsidiary of Potomac Edison. The remainder of the footage was from the '5O's through the mid 70's. The WM started to be phased out in '72-'73 and fully merged to Chessie about '75-'76. Then to CSX about '87. Good footage. Good video.

Totally, the trains are unreal but the guys who shot the film did a tremendous job for the era also! There are some real gems here!

This has been viewed by active members of the Western Maryland Rwy. Historical Society. From 00:32 to 1:42 is a freight operation of the Hagerstown& Frederick Rwy., owned by the Potomac Edison Co. The WM passenger train and the trolley freight action were filmed in Thurmont, MD.in approximately 1954. H&F electric passenger service ended 2/20/1954, electric freight service about 1 year later. WM passenger service ended in Thurmont on 6/7/1957. 1:43-2:21 is filmed in Frederick, MD. and along the H&F line to Thurmont. Hagerstown and Williamsport WM action is from 1970 to June 1972 , the Alco FA-2s were gone by then. For those who insist this is the early 1960s, the WM Red-white-black color scheme did not start until 6/1969. For those who don't know, the B&O had trackage rights on this line between Cherry Run,WV, and Hagerstown. Questions?

Wow, thank you warrenjenkins1902 that is fascinating information and some really neat facts about this region. Thurmont looked like a great place to spend a day and watch trains. Didn't realize the Red-White-Black for the Western Maryland started so late in the 1960's!

Man, I love and look forward to every one of these C. Smiley videos, but hasn't this one already been uploaded? Thanks

Some of these scenes were in our longer B&O upload, this is really for fans of the WM because it is so rare to see that railroad on color film in sunshine!

This must be in the early 60s. Very informative and it giving me idea for a new line of my trains. Thanks

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, from the early 60s during an epic time in railroading!

I like those WM F7 and SD40 sets. Makes me wonder if WM crews preferred the F7 in the lead for a smother ride.

That is a good point and makes sense. They sure look smooth!

What a perfect place to live. We love seeing old American small towns back in the 1950's and 60's. Especially in color film! Some of these scenes are magical!

Nothing like seeing footage taken near your house frome around 50 years ago. I can stand where all the Williamsport shots were taken. Looks nothing like that now

* Western Maryland Railway, not railroad. There was a bankruptcy and the name was changed.
@charlessmileyvideos2 ай бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out, we made the correction in the title. I always wondered why they were called "Railway" Instead of "Railroad".
