Mine works just fine with most of the ammo that I have tried. 99% of the idiots out there that want to rip on the gun in the comments have never even held one much less shot one. I have heard about some other folks complain about feeling pain in the web of their hand and it could be that it is impinging on a nerve in that area. The low bore axis causes the recoil to go more straight back rather than a rotation in the upward direction in other pistols. Thanks for posting a fairly positive review.

Shoots low when using conventional sight picture. Use front sight dot instead of tip of front sight and you'll be dead on. Curl thumb down instead of thumb over thumb hold and you'll have a more comfortable range session. Gun is real accurate if you do your part. I must agree with the disassembly procedure. It is a pain to take apart. I just blast mine with Gun Scrubber then oil it with Lucas gun oil. Runs great. Hope this helps.

Yep. R51 has combat sight picture. Accuracy is not bad and recoil has less muzzle flip due to low bore axis. Interesting oddity to add for the collection for $200 bucks. You can get the Crimson Trace laser grip for $30.

I have an original Remington model 51 I found inside a closet, in a house I bought back in ‘05. Got ahold of the previous owner of 15yrs and they never seen it..... so it was a score a guess. Cleaned it up, got new mags, and it’s ran pretty good until recent. Needs a new recoil spring for sure but other than that it’s been a fun find.
@jonathanhudak20594 жыл бұрын
I wanted one of these sometime after they first came out. But it seemed like they didn't last on the store shelves very long before they were being pulled by representatives from Remington. I talked with a local gun store owner and he said they've had a lot of problems with these. Sometimes the guns would come into the store and be missing the magazines and just things like that. Other people I had talked to also had nothing but bad things to say about them. Then I found one several years later used at the LGS for a reasonable price. $200-$250, (I'd have to double check) mine must be one of the newer ones after Remington supposedly ironed out all the problems. It's a cool little gun. I always liked the original ones that were made in 380 and 32 Caliber back in the twenties and thirties so the thought of having a modern one in 9 mm appeal to me. And like Graham says it's just a different pistol. I must have gotten a good one because I have had zero problems with it. It feels good in the hand hand, points naturally and is a good shooter. I like it. Other people that I have let shoot it also liked it. I've never tried shooting any steel cased ammo through it but have tried a variety of different bullet weights bike 115, 124 and 147 grain. I do agree it can be a bear to get it apart and back together again but as others have said in the comments if you practice and do it regularly it becomes easier and you'll get more familiar with it. Cool to see a new review on these and one that is positive. Great video Graham thanks!

So many love to pile on negative comments with zero experience with this firearm. I love mine. Once you accept that it is NOT a 7+1 and use it as 7 or a 6+1, the failure rate disappears. The magazines are oversprung. I like to use Winchester 9 mm NATO and the gun runs really well with that round. Yeah, it's a little snappy. But it feels good in your hand, it has a nice heft to it, and I like the looks. And I hit what I'm shooting at with it. I wouldn't recommend it as an only gun, but I also like 'different' guns, and this one's a keeper. Oh, and yes, I have invented swear words taking this thing down and reassembling it. It gets easier with practice. Not so easy that it’s a breeze, but easier.

A lot of people just go by what I have heard from others and just automatically assume that it's no good even though they have never shot one. I wish more people would give them a try and they might find that they have a nice size 9 mm pistol that is fun to shoot. Somebody does a video that describes what the changes were. I think it had something to do with the magazines but supposedly there was a way you can tell if you have a newer one over an older one. Mine must be one of the newer ones as I have had no problems with it. The only thing I don't like about it is when it comes time to take it apart and clean it! LOL

Mine also only malfunctions when using 7+1. Is there any way to fix this? I seen a video by HrFunk where he tries to alter the magazines to fix that issue, but none of the stuff he tried works. Out of all the gun reviews that I have watched, this gun by FAR has the most hate! That only fueled my desire, along with the uniqueness to want to buy it. I like to, BEFORE even going to the range, to sit and rack the slide in, take it apart, oil it, reassemble, and rack it some more. I keep the mags fully loaded to break the springs in. I can field strip, and reassemble it in the dark. This one was by far, the tightest functioning, longest to break in. But, by the time I got to the range, I was pleasantly surprised! I must be one of the lucky ones, that you read about, OCCASIONALLY, that has never experienced any malfunction of any kind. It has begun my favorite, and yes, I can and do trust my life with it. I have ran several boxes through it, including my self defense loads. To help out the rest of you, and increase LUCK, I saw a video a month ago where the man claimed he had THE permanent solution to the magazine problem. He simply cut approximately 3/16 off of the follower legs, to give it a little room, in a fully loaded mag. I checked them out, compared with my other pistols mags. Sure enough, all the other ones had a little extra room. You could STILL depress the last round a little with a mag loader. So, even though I haven't experienced any problems, I went ahead and did just that, using a Dremel tool, in all three of my mags. Now, there IS a definite difference in the action, when I rack in a round slowly, in a fully loaded mag. Pretty smooth now ☺️.

A couple tricks for reliable functioning, keep the bolt, rails, barrel / bushing well lubed. Not any different than any semi auto. Load full mags with slide open. Don't load it 7+1. I actually like the R51 Gen2 a lot, but I, like you, get the stinging "red hand" whenever I shoot it. It doesn't seem to be slide bite - I'm at a loss to figure out what's doing it. I've put about 300 rounds through the Gen2 with no failures to fire, feed, or extract. It's proven itself nicely accurate at combat distances and has been 100% reliable with everything I've fed it, from 115 grain to 147 grain FMJs, as well as an assortment of hollow points (such as Hornady's 124 grain XTP). I made the mistake of buying one of the first iteration of the R51 - a true POS right out of the box. It jammed, failed to feed, failed to fire, fired out of battery, double-fed, and generally behaved badly. I happily sent it back to Remington when they issued the recall and opted to trade up for their 1911 clone. Later, when the Gen2s came out, I cautiously waited to see what other shooters reported about them. When it looked like they'd been given the all-clear, I picked one up and have been very happy with it ever since (save for the red-hand stingy thing). You put on a nice review of the R51 here - very enjoyable to watch. Be well, and stay safe.

Why would they even release a gun like the r51 gen 1 without some type of testing and quality control?I understand why the gun has had such a bad reputation if all I've heard about it is true. And still more Megadeth! Since their concert is postponed, I won't get to see them this month. I'll have to come here instead. Having watched other R51 vids, the fact that it functioned without any issues is sorta noteworthy. I guess they fixed the gun's worse flaws, then again, I'd have to see waaaay more than two magazine's worth of ammo going down range to be sold on the Vers. 2.0. If I had to guess, I'd say that the 'stinging hand' issue is related to the lightness of the pistol, or the design of the grip safety... 9mmP is not a wimpy round. I suspect shooting +P rounds would be even more unpleasant.

Graham... pain and injury production are a product of two things "Rate" and "Pressure". The pain receptors in the sympathetic nervous system work over a range of input rates evolved during evolutionary time. Meaning you can feel pain if the rate is within what a human would experience living in the wild, so to speak, just things you might find out in the natural world that cause pain. However, if the rate of input is higher you will not feel pain... such as a bullet impact. The pain felt IN THAT CASE is later or delayed, cause by tissue damage, and inflammation. Pressure is the primary cause of pain, meaning the pain receptors are primarily pressure sensors. Now what does this mean as to what is going on with the gun. The Pederson Lock used is a delayed blowback. It is different in that it is what is termed a "hesitation delay system" but uses a small independent breech block component mounted in a slide component rather than a "monolithic slide breech block" like most other pistols; his short video shows the basic mechanism in operation... kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2nTgodrjd2cq6M. This video is more complete and longer... kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6TVp5SBmdanfq8 . Hint it operates much like the original Thompson Submachine Gun. The the barrel is not fully fixed, though it might appear that way, but can move forth and back under recoil and by the recoil spring pushing it forward.... not by very much though. The independent breech block is the main mode of operation and delay, Upon firing a round, the barrel, cartridge case, the breech block along with the slide travel backward against the recoil spring pressure a few thousands of an inch caused by the initial momentum transfer recoil launching the bullet. This causes when the barrel travel stops a momentum transfer to the frame of the weapon, a very quick high rate stop and shock to the mechanism though the barrel retention system, the direction to this is about at the same angle as the stop and the breech block shoulder aft and down in reaction force... Newton's 2nd Law of Motion - the vector sum of the forces on a mechanism equal the momentum, then under Newton's 3rd law, an object exerts a force on a second body, the second object simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first object. But their is more...then after the barrel stops in the impact on its stop pin... the cartridge case while still under residual pressure is pushed back in the chamber with the case walls dragging along the chamber walls slightly braking the movement transferred to the breech block and slide by the cartridge case from force of gas pressure and the momentum imparted by the recoil. The case due to the slight reduction in pressure caused by the initial hesitation time delay from the slight movement of the barrel, cartridge case, breech block and slide when the barrel stops against its retaining pin; this prevents the cartridge case from blowing out... à la Graham's case projection testing in the table top... making the case projection from the chamber more. So the initial hesitation delay of the barrel movement prevents the failure of the case due to exposure to only slightly reduced firing pressure, allowing pressure to drop slightly to case survivable levels, THAT IS THE SOLE PURPOSE. This is not like the Thompson SMG as the Thompson relies solely on case stiction under pressure and mass of the breech block, i.e. traditional blow back. The second part of the delay and the main hesitation is the breech block hitting a stop on the frame, and bumping over the stop by incline of the angle of the stop shoulder. This is the main portion of delay. As it changes direction bumping over the stop and tilting the breech block momentum and some of the slide's momentum is transferred at an angle corresponding to the angle of the stop and breech block motion, in the block tilting upward at its aft end. This imparts a slight delay and large momentum transfer to the breech block and the stop shoulder on the frame. The vector sum of this force is divided between the breech block tilt motion, and the motion of the frame down and back at about 45 degree direction. It is a very short and fast impact. This is exactly how the Thompson SMG Blish lock works except there is no impact as there Blish lock is in constant contact with the bolt and the frame, primarily as Blish's concept includes the friction between components. Pederson there is an abrupt impact due to the allowable movement between the breech block and the frame, rather than Thompson SMG friction (compared to the impact transfer), and similar change of motion of the blish lock component. In either case the relatively low mass of the Blish Lock in the Thompson or the breech block in the Pederson design very efficiently transfers the momentum of the recoil force/momentum/motion in a OFF AXIS DIRECTION TO THE BARREL BORE, this reduces muzzle flip and recoil transferred to the shoulder or hand, by redirecting it into the low mass off axis component momentum. However unfortunately, in the R51 Pederson design the impact and transfer of momentum (equal and opposite force, Newton's 3rd law, gets transferred into the frame as a shock and high level of momentum to force transition due to the impact or high rate nature of it. Of course, the direction is right to the web of the hand when in another momentum at a high rate of speed takes place very efficiently transferring the the energy from the momentum into the hand web area! Giving Graham a nice inflammatory reaction! Of course, few gun designers are bio-anthropologists along with educations in physics!
