Cinders have been used on track surfaces and roads to provide additional traction in winter conditions. Cinders are also employed as inorganic mulch in xeriscaping, because of excellent drainage properties and erosion resistance. In this context, they are referred to frequently with the name "lava rock".

The Cima Cinder mine is the one associated with the phonebooth. Looks like you are at the Aiken Cinder Mine (closed 1990). There are two cinder mines in the area and only the Cima Cinder Mine was in operation when Mojave National Preserve was created. Once the preserve was created in 1994 the NPS worked to eliminate operating mining claims and served notice to the Caffee family running the mine in 1999. I think the NPS basically screwed over the Caffee family and put them out of work. Cinders from the two mines basically built Vegas.

@@kimballamram552 Yep ... one of many KZbinr's to visit the Cima Cinder Mine. Yes ... they were trying to get Senator Feinstein to help, but I think she was a part of the process to shut down active mining claims and did not have any interest in helping the Caffee family.

I believe it was groups like Center of Biological Diversity, NP and Conservation filing suit against BLM/NPS because those groups thought the mining operation violated the endangered species act...the desert tortoise....as well as other acts even though the NPS I believe, did do an impact study and found no threat. Basically, the Caffee family got hosed.

One of the uses of cinder,is to spread on streets & hiways in the winter time to provide traction on icy & slick roadways ; sometimes cinder is used with rock salt to prevent the roadways from getting ice packed! The reason you don't see the cinders after the hiways have been cleared is,because cinders will break down into sand like particles after heavy traffic has driven over it. Most of the equipment you are showing in the video is used to crush the cinder into different sizes, depending on what the customer wants; cinder is also mixed with cement for various construction applications.
