Just before Y2K our family were busy prepping for the “end of the world” predicted. We had a hand grinder just like yours. I got my pre-teen kids involved in grinding flour for our supper. We counted and it took 100s of revolutions per cup. It warmed us!! I also found I could cook a loaf of bread in my Magnalite pan on top of my gas stove even if there was no electricity. I just boosted the loaf pan up a bit to avoid burning the bottom.

Well because of your experience with Wonder Mill that and after all of my research that Wonder Mill is the one that I will go with also. The fact that it doesn’t sell on Amazon is a bonus for me any big business that tries to shut out one voice I will not do business with and have not done business with Amazon all year. I order everything I can other places or directly from the company Amazon is not on the top of my list as you can tell. But thank you for your review of the wonder mill and I am looking forward to getting mine now.

weight in = weight out BUT 1 pound of wheat berries is approx 2 cups while 1 pound of flour, which is fluffier, measures about 3 - 4 cups depending on how fine it is ground and whether it is packed down or sifted. One reason recipes from professional bakers always specify flour amounts by weight, not volume :-)

Excited because I just started a similar adventure. I've baked with whole grain flour before but wanted to be able to store wheat berries in my long term pantry AND mill my own fresh flour. Since I wanted mine to be usable during grid down situations and I won't be milling large quantities I ordered the manual WonderMill Jr Deluxe. It comes with both stone (for grains) and steel (for oily seeds or nut butters) grinding wheels. I also bought the adapter so I can borrow hubby's heavy duty electric drill for a semi-motorized operation to save wear and tear on my arm muscles if power is available. It just arrived a few days ago so I get to play with the small 5-lbs bags of hard red and hard white wheat I also got to experiment with before I invest in 25 or 50 lb bags to place in my prepper pantry storage. I've only ground an experimental cup of rice so far to clean the stones and see how it works but am already impressed by the quality of my WonderMill!

I have the Roots and Branches grain mill and I love it. I chose the model that is a manual but gives you the option of purchasing a motor (at additional cost). Initially I purchased just the mill but two months later I went ahead and bought the motor. Roots and Branches makes other grain mill models: some just a manual, some just electric, and then the one I selected which can be used either way. I love the flexibility of being able to grind my own flour with or without electricity. Cost-wise, both the mill and motor together were far less costly than other electric mills.

And to think how our ancestors did this, mortar and pestle? Time to research: In the advanced civilizations the grains were ground by hand grinding grain between stones. These methods included the mortar and pestle (a stone club striking grain held in a stone bowl), the saddlestone (a cylindrical stone rolling against grain held in a stone bowl), and the quern (a horizontal, disk-shaped stone spinning on top of grain held on another horizontal stone). Such an hard work was usually done by a woman, as archaeologists discovered studying some women bones find in neolithic sites. Synopsis: IMHO, We are spoiled and have a lot to be grateful for. We take too many things for granted. Thank you for this video.

I've been using the Blendtec Kitchen Mill for 10+ years to grind my grains. It's an OK machine, even though it only grinds to one consistency, I can still use the flour to make my breads and corn to make my corn bread. I may be totally wrong but I believe you will find that the Wondermill will have the same issues as the Blendtec Mill, it will be loud, you will only grind to one consistency, and you will need to let the flour cool before mixing it with your yeast.

@@kathyo7762 I haven't tried to regrind, mainly because there is no augur to feed it through the machine. The machine has a dial, for coarse to fine grind but can't really tell any difference in results. Yes, I was thinking of felt. The rubber left a mark that I can easily sand out. We'll toy with it. Thanks!!

Generally you cannot use a flour mill for nuts due to the oils in nuts. That hand mill certainly works better than the hand mill I used to have. I got rid of it because I just do not have the strength to use it.

I’ve got one of those and my biggest issue is trying to keep it anchored and not move, I don’t mind the arm work, have a vita mix and the container for milling, I haven’t tried yet , but in either case at least a manual for those SHTF. Moments or low on flour in stores, have 50 lb bucket of wheat berries that’s sealed w gamba kid and also in 10# can, don’t laugh but also 3 big glass containers filled w grain from Germany, have no idea what kind though, there’s 2 different kind

I have the K-tec mill, I think they have changed the name now to maybe blend-tec. I mostly wanted mine so I could grind corn. I would like to have a solar generator to rum mine in a grid down situation. I don't have the strength to do that.

I'm so glad you were forced to grind this way....lol. This is the grinder I bought to go with my good deal on the Augason Farms Hard White Wheat deal last month (or whenever that was). It is also with my SHTF stuff! It was hard to tell on the screen, but do you think the grind is as fine as commercialy produced flour that we buy at the store?

I tried a hand mill. It made me buy a electric. I figured solar gas generator would work.

You get more out than you put in by volume. Weight is same either way. Measuring by weight is easiest.
